Belvedere Palace is divided into two building units. The Upper and Lower Belvedere, both were built in the 18th century by order of Prince Eugene of Savoy. In between there is a huge beautiful baroque garden. The palace served as the Viennese summer residence for the successful general Prince Eugene of Savoy. The castle, which is well worth seeing, and the beautifully designed gardens were built in the baroque style.
Today, large areas of both parts of the building and the park are open to visitors. In the Upper Belvedere there is a permanent exhibition with mostly Austrian works of art. In the Lower Belvedere, changing exhibitions by various artists from different art eras are shown.
Belvedere Garden
Walking up from Belvedere’s lower palace feels like traversing a costume drama film set. It’s all sculpted hedges, graceful fountains, and cherubic statues - and all looking clean and tidy.
How to get there?
The entire palace complex with garden is located on a flat slope and has a length of about 1 km. If you prefer to take your walk through the gardens downhill in a relaxed manner, you should start your visit on the side of the Upper Belvedere. The main entrance there is directly at the corner of Prinz Eugen-Straße and Landstraßer Gürtel. The closest public transport is the tram. The Quartier Belvedere stop is only approx. 150 m away. The Südtiroler Platz Hauptbahnhof underground station is only 1 tram stop away, around 600 m from the main entrance to Belvedere Palace.
At the Lower Belvedere, the tram stop of the same name is only 50 m from the entrance. The tram line 71 takes you 2 stops to the Oper stop in the center of Vienna. Nearby there is the Karlsplatz subway station for the U1, U2 and U4 lines.
