Very interesting! I like the 4wd setup so far, looking forward to more videos!

You should market those knuckles you made. I’d buy a couple. Save me the time of recreating it. Love the videos.

I might at some point if I get more exposure and interest. I do like the idea of manufacturing my own custom parts. Thanks for the input. I appreciate it.

I need a set of those spindles. Love me some polaris hilliard 4x4. Being able convert it to dual a-arms is amazing.

I have just watched a few of your videos they are really cool. It’s a wonder your channels not more popular. I like the chain drive 4wd I don’t quite get the hubs so you have to unlock each side when you steer?

Thanks for the comment, I appreciate it! The Hilliard clutch in the hub acts similar to a bicycle “freewheel”. The front tires are free to spin faster relative to the rear wheels (no binding or scrubbing going around rorners). If the front wheel speed decreases to the speed of the rear wheels, the clutch will then engage on the hub. It’s all automatic. Polaris named the system “on demand 4wd” . It only engages when you need it.

For making front spindles, why don’t you use the sportsman 4wd strut type? The 300 uses a cast iron setup for struts, you can cut off the top of the spindle/knuckle to shorten it and would just have to make a simple mount to hold a ball joint.
@kartbuilds697

I did think about that is it cast aluminum or cast-iron
@kartbuilds697
Жыл бұрын
I thought it was cast aluminum and didn’t know how I would mount a steering arm to it because on the strut the steering arm is higher up

The older base models had a strut that bolted up to a cast steel/iron knuckle. If you look up a steering knuckle for a Sportsman or Hawkeye 300, you will see what I, talking about. I have a set I’m keeping for a future 2 seat buggy build. The steering arm is part of,the lower casting and perfect for a dual A arm conversion

How strong of a clutch is that? I mean it looks like it can be scaled up to handle more torque but maybe its limited in the format IDK.

The Hilliard clutch (differential) removed from a 1996 Polaris sportsman 4x4 works well for the 21” tires it was designed for. When I added 26” tires with 3-1 gear reduction through portal axles the clutch failed.

Do you have the wires ran for the magnet in the Hilliard clutch?

Yes. I show the magnet installation in the video. The next video i will power up the electro magnet for a demonstration.

If and when that chain snaps... It'll be a catastrophic failure on who ever is riding it. Why not a have a shaft?

The chain will be guarded if that is your concern.

I had a shaft drivin buggies i built off of an Arctic Cat 300 just extended the front shaft with a carrier bearing. But i abandoned that pretty quick because it was scary thinking when and what it would destroy plus seeing it soin between your legs was horrendous even with a cover over it it was nerve wracking.

Nice! Modifying drivetrains above 20hp is no joke. I definitely think about catastrophic failures and the consequences. Be safe brother!

I'm trying to use the same set up for 4wd I just need to figure out how to power the magnets or how to wire it . if you could make a video explaining it I would appreciate it.

The electro magnet has two wires. The brown goes to the negative Battery terminal or ground. The other wire Goes to the positive terminal. You can put a switch in the ground wire to turn four-wheel-drive on and off.

Could you in just run front and rear gear driven diffs ? That way it’s not always solid ?
@kartbuilds697

The front wheels have differential hubs. They are not locked solid and are free to rotate at different speeds. The rear axles are locked.

Hi sir you are doing a nice job on your build but the inside u-joint center should be in the center of you A- arm pivot other than that doing good will get back with you if I see other things keep up the nice build.

I do agree with you that the cv axle is too short. Fortunately the 3/4” of back and forth movement built into the cv axle is just enough for the suspension to work.
@kartbuilds697

If there are any issues I will lengthen the cv axles.
