Would like to say thank you for your design on the stag pens. I’ve built 4 using your plans and it has worked out great. Awesome craftsmanship!!

Thank you for sharing the design! This design with wheels or skids would work great for me because I have 4x4 raised beds and a backyard flock. I can put a hen in the pen for a few hours over a raised bed with a load of compost, and she could spread out the compost where I want it with out much spill over. My chickens prefer to dig in the compost pile before they will go for their grain. I already do this with my chickens but I just dump a load and let them free for all on it. They do spread it out pretty well but they spill it into pathways and the grass. Chickens can't color in the lines. haha. Soon, there will be garden plants that I can't have them eating because we plan to eat the vegetables. Using smaller hardware cloth would make this an ideal quail pen as well. The door is wide enough for me to squeeze in while being narrow enough to prevent them from getting out.

Glad you like it. It'd be interesting to see a video if you do decide to try some out with your garden beds.

Really good work but I recommend stainless steel. Those are made to last! A little more expensive but you don't have to worry about it rotting out in a few years and if you decide it wasn't your cup of tea, you can always sell them.😉😎

How would I set up a tie cord using this type of stag pen?
@ChickenWired
2 жыл бұрын
Honestly, tie cords would not be suited to this type of pen. Pens like these are meant more for birds who do not have spurs that are hardened and grown enough for the tie cord.

Would these pens be suitable for single mating gamefowl?
@ChickenWired
5 жыл бұрын
You could use them for single mating lots of people do use 4 x 4 pens for that.

Chicken Wired great, I’m pretty new to raising gamefowl I was just using 4x4 dome pens but it’s real windy where I live and my pens keep blowing around but these pens look extremely sturdy. And I hope you recover well sir, I love the videos.

I have a few questions. 1. About how much do you think it costs to make a single one ? 2. Is it predator proof ? I have some raccoons and opossums in the neighborhood I don’t want them to eat the young birds.

Mainly replying incase someone else Watching would ask the same question - all depends on pricing in your local area - currently, in my area of VA, these pens would cost roughly $90 each to build, no door.. Just the 2x4s, wire, staples, and plywood - part of my labeling was the 2x4 wire at $1 per foot based on the cost of a 100ft roll. Little Thompsons water seal on the untreated plywood will go a LONG way. Anyhow, hope the price estimate helps someone out. Anyhow, these pens aren't economical to build for guys raising alot of birds - they are however far superior to most anything else in a 4x4 setting. For the guy keeping 20 or 30 (or less) potential brood cocks and wanting to keep them as safe as possible - this is the route I'd go. For the guys keeping everything that comes out of an egg shell - this probably isn't the pen for you unless money is no object.
