Very good comparison Alex! The iPhone 13 pro is an amazing tool, but. One question off topic - there is no way in switching off "Smart HDR" on the iPhone 13 (pro, max). It‘s always on. In "camera" on the iPhone 12, and now on the 14, you can switch it off. Skin tones in front of a blue sky are HORRIBLE, absolutely useless. I tried in RAW, I tried in another app "ProCamera", same result. Did you experiment the same? Any suggestion?

A well thought out and executed lesson. I really appreciate what you’ve done. As I looked at the sample images, i think I saw more details recovered in the white clouds on the canon than on the phone. I’m surprised there was not a greater difference in sharpness, especially in the background. Just for curiosity, why did you not put the phone on a tripod? Keep up your great work.

He has a quite cheap smartphone (Samsung A50) and he took the pictures in automatic mode .. as for me I had a Canon EOS R with an RF 85 F2 lens and sorry to say, but the Samsung was the clear winner! My photos were unedited. In your video both the smartphone and the full frame camera went some levels up ... Are the R5 images unedited in this video? If your answer was no, can any unedited images compete with the iPhone images? :) Thank you for the answers in advance.

The ONE thing I didn't like, when going hiking was carrying the DSLR and it was always what felt like the need to carry a couple of lenses or a big zoom lens on the camera. Scrambling over rocks or hiking anywhere that had loose ground or mud was a worry that I would damage the camera. All day or even half day walks always had some feeling of dread at damaging the camera. But the phone could be in my pocket or any pocket to be honest and as they say the best camera is the one you have with you, I always had my phone so always had a camera. The Huawei P20 Pro was the first time I felt like I had a decent alternative to my DSLR. It was a compromise, I knew that it would always be, but it was one I accepted. Now I have a Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra it does feel like those compromises are not as big and although they will always be a compromise I can cope with it. Our 3 week road trip and northern lights trip into the Yukon showed me how good the phone could be. The northern lights show was all but invisible to the human eye so as we say "the lights saw us even if we never saw them" But the Huawei P20 Pro gave us some amazing photos of the lights and the photos actually were more vivid than most of the guys with their DSLR's were getting. All with a simple tripod and a phone the 3 days in the Yukon were not quite as disappointing as they could have been. I would have to say I now take photos so much more than I ever did as its just so easy to get a phone out even on some edge or some slope where any camera would need to be in a bag to protect it. Many of the photos were good enough to print and every photo is a memory that brings back those moments. Is a phone camera perfect? NO.. Is it bad? NO.. would I get better photos with a DSLR? Possibly, but I would take a lot less photos and I could have damaged or even killed that DSLR on a rock or on some slope by now. It is a compromise I can live with.

Really well said. I feel the same way after last weeks trip to a National Park. I'm thinking about not hiking with my DSLR anymore. There will always be corner cases where it would do better, but I think I'll cary my phone and not my DSLR for most hikes
@YAMR1M
Жыл бұрын
@@beach4me2007 We got back just over a week ago from a 6 week road trip in the USA. We spent a lot of time in Yosemite, Sequoia and then Nevada, Arizona and Utah. Hiking, kayaking and cycling. The phone and the Go Pro did a LOT of work. Over 3000 photos and hours of video. The heat and carrying a full camalbak would have made carrying a DSLR too a real pain. Yes you do have to think about photos more to get what you want but getting rich colours and lens flare when looking through some of the arches in Arches valley at sunrise was possible. Getting good shots with a phone may even make you better at composing images with a DSLR if I ever did decide to go back to one. If the next gen phones begin to close the gap a little more at least I know from using a phone as my main camera that I can still improve my images. I have to admit, my newest phone was bought purely based on camera performance regardless of OS. It was android but I would have no problem going to Apple if the camera system was good enough. The latest iPhone seems to be a big step up from before and Apple could be in my future. But I will still keep an open mind when I do look for another phone when my current one needs to be replaced.

People are so reluctant to admit a phone can take pics and videos near high end camera/lens quality. Of course there are trade offs but you can compensate with software. Once depth of field and low light quality improve it’s gonna be mind blowing

Honestly, this just leaves me more confused. I found your video trying to compare the iPhone to a DSLR/mirrorless. I have a Sony a7c currently. I went out today to take a picture with an object and a sunset in the background. I couldn't quite get the result I wanted with my standalone camera, but my iPhone got exactly the result I wanted. One reason I got the standalone camera with a full frame sensor was to have the option to print out large photos if I wanted to. I am starting to wonder if I would have better spent my money on the iPhone pro instead of a standalone camera. I am a hobbyist photographer, wouldn't even claim to be amateur yet. I'm just feeling like I spent too much on a tool, you know? Thanks for the video and comparison! I appreciate the time you took to compare the two.

I also own the A7C. You will not get its full benefit until you properly learn how to take advantage of the customization/manual controls available to you. A mobile phone uses technology to do automatic processing of the image to make it look good in jpeg. You have to learn to use the camera controls in something like an A7C to achieve that... Where the A7C will shine is when you do post-processing from RAW. The capture from a much bigger sensor just affords you a lot bandwidth to work with especially if you plan to enlarge your images. I have been waiting for a day when I can just go on my long nature hikes only carrying a mobile phone. Unfortunately, not sure that day is going to come any time soon.

This comparison clearly demonstrates the fallacy that is Digital Photography. In essence what we are doing is computer imagery. Powerful computers within our devices reconstruct a version of what we perceive as reality, from a procession of zeros and ones fed to them by the onboard ADC unit. The more clever the algorithms used to convert the data, the more ' realistic ' the resulting image. At times we need to be very honest with ourselves. We are not doing photography, we are engaged in CGI.

Was a very well done comparison, Did get all of them correct however, there is just some kind of feel to the canon shots which gives it away, even when shown at sub 8mp (side by side on a 8mp canvas) (4k) resolution on youtube. maybe the better dynamic range and color gradient. The last two shots were no competition at all the canon blows the iphone away imo. But picture 3 was very very close and the first two pictures were remarkable close to the canon when viewed at this size and resolution.

I'm just gonna state which ones I think are the camera: 1: A. 2: B. 3: A? The KZitem compression algorithm is not helping me here, I'm trying to look at the detail in the trees but they both look the same. 4: A. Easy money. 5: Also A. In 4 and 5 I can tell because the B photos look like they're trying to stretch the effectiveness of digital zooming. I am going to hate myself if I got every single one wrong. Posting before watching the results, fingers crossed!

Post-watching results reply: 1: God damn-it, I was switching between A and B for this one because of the tones in the grass behind the fence being greener in picture A, but what ultimately got me to pick A as the camera was the noise because I know that phones often like to smooth out noise and cameras usually leave it as-is, forgetting that the R5 is really good with high ISO's and the iPhone has a tiny sensor. 2: Yess! Went with my instincts about the grass colors and the sky on this one. 3: Woohoo! Went with this one because of the lower contrast and slightly lower saturation as compared to picture B, but it was again a mixed bag because I couldn't see any difference in the detail levels of the trees (likely due to the KZitem compression algorithm). 4: I thought picture B looked a little too unsharp to be just due to digital zooming, that explains it. 5: Was right about the quality difference from the digital zooming. Also noticed the contrast difference and lack of detail in the shadows, but it was less of a giveaway. So close! 4/5 and the one I missed was a close call. Really good comparison though, and the images were really close in quality, closer than I would have expected. Maybe now you have to do a comparison with the iPhone 14

I did a similar test with my a7r4 and one plus 9 pro... It's super hard to tell in most of the shots.. even in auto mode the phone does so good with the HDR .. incredible stuff

the fact that its hard to tell for the average person which photo is better speaks volumes about the quality of the iphone. If i have the money it makes better sense to spend it on an iphone than an expensive camera if I just need it for casual photography and videos.

Wow this was a very good comparison video. The biggest thing I noticed that I feel gave the iPhone away every time was the dynamic range. Still a impressive little camera for being on a phone!

I really enjoyed the transparency of this video. No fuss, straight to the point and with gorgeous locations and results to match! I wonder what the results would've been if you had mounted the iPhone on a tripod and used Even Longer for long exposures with parallel exposure bracketing. I presume the native camera ProRAW files are bigger because it captures and merges several exposures for HDR, similarly to what the Lr camera does in HDR mode. Great work! Cheers.

With my hiking mate we made a private contest on landscape shooting.
