Obviously SI is trying to get people excited about soccer. The article isn't meant to reflect opinion, it's meant to shape opinion. Apparently, that's too difficult of a concept for Mikey Babes to grasp. "My two kids don't like soccer, so no kids like soccer." - Francesca logic.

All the soccer heads keep saying “SoCcEr Is ThE nExT bIg SpOrT iN tHe UsA” we’ve all been hearing it for years. You want to attract popularity? How about the men’s USA team not lose to fucking TRINIDAD AND TABAGO. THATS A GOOD START!! Another thing, as much as I don’t like him. Keith Olbermann made a good point years ago about how the MLS adopted a English style naming system for their teams (FC DALLAS, New York FC, etc FC. )

Soccer became a thing back in 2010 but the hype dwindles when the World Cup is every four years and the US teams arent exciting. The Messis and Ronaldos are still too distant(even w/ internet) have a presence of legend in the US. The sport is too dissapointing to watch as most shots miss or get blocked and players lose posession often. Matches are long: Its more economical to watch the highlights & those highlights over 90 min are few and far between.

Oh man, Mike thinks that World Cup gets deserved coverage but thinks that Greece won the World Cup back when WFAN was in Astoria. That was in 2004, when Greece won the Euro Championship, Mike. The Euro is a tournament that roughly parallels the Copa America (I said rough, I'm blurring the lines here but not too much) and is also being played this year in France. Note, the caller tries to explain that the Euro is also going on but Mike just hastily perused 11 pages, so he's already an expert and wants none of it. But if the hype was justified in Astoria back in 2004 and Mike understood it, why can't he just understand it now when the US is playing and hosting a similar competition that will boast Messi playing in it? The answer is "back aftuh dis..."

I like him as a radio host and he grew up in an era where soccer wasn't shown on tv like it is now with all of these extra channels like Bien Sports and fox soccer plus. I understand how international sports like volleyball, soccer, and team handball work they have club teams and international teams. It's a different system and I'm not against it because not everything has to be the same.

In 2004 Greece won the Euro Cup, not the World Cup. Mike is really lost with this subject. It's really incredible. It's not a sport you wanna talk to him about because he has no knowledge whatsoever. He should have a general knowledge but he does not.

this entire discussion is ridiculously unnecessary as the facts of the progress of soccer viewership in the U.S. is blatantly apparent to anybody with common sense. what's even more ridiculous is that Franceca said it himself in noting that SI has dedicated a good amount magazine space to it. NBC's and FOX's respective main channels have not only been showing more and more soccer but the networks have also invested more and more in the game; there's the Bundesliga on NBC and the BPL on FOX. ESPNFC has tied down their timeslot for every weekday. the viewership is obviously expanding. don't know the numbers but i imagine it's the same when it comes to gaming with FIFA. #Yankees
