The Great Motorboat Tour reaches the Isle of Wight where John and Fionn give us a great close-up view of The Needles. They dodge the Red Funnel ferry and negotiate an isolated Napoleonic fort en route to Brighton. The weather remains set fair meaning that John and Fionn cover the distance from Salcombe to Brighton in just 12 hours.
Sponsored by Haven Knox-Johnston, The Great Motorboat Tour is the weekly video diaries of two men in a boat and their attempt to circumnavigate the British Isles. Film-maker John Boyle and cameraman Fionn Crow Howieson set off from Falmouth in their Sealine S34, called Shark Bay, keeping a regular video diary which provides compelling viewing of their great adventure as well as unique views and insight into our wonderful coastline. Their route takes them eastwards along the south coast, around southeast England, across the Thames estuary and then along the full length of the east coast to Scotland and beyond, past Cape Wrath taking in the wildest and most remote shores of our islands. Shark Bay then turns south following Scotland's beautiful west coast before heading westwards to reach Northern Ireland. Their adventure takes them right around Ireland along the west and south coastlines before they head eastwards across the Irish Sea to west Wales and finally around Land's End back towards their home port of Falmouth. It's a huge challenge and not all plain sailing....so sign up to join the adventure in 32 episodes and see the British Isles as never seen before -- by boat.

5/32 Needles to Brighton - Rapid Progress Eastwards
Half way through day two and we’ve already reached the Needles on the western tip of the Isle of Wight.
That’s amazing to see that. Huge life sized thing, with all the layers running through it and a coastguards station right up the top, amazing. Then the Needles themselves. So iconic aren’t they? Probably one of the most famous British lighthouses, absolutely beautiful.
Now that’s not something I’ve expected to see on the coast. A chairlift taking trippers to the top of the islands to get a view out onto the lighthouse. The forts here were built in Napoleonic times to protect the harbours of the Solent from the French. We continue to enjoy pond-like, glassy conditions to the end of the day. Last destination of a very long day, edging in to get shots of the pier, it’s an extremely low tide and even this far off shore the water’s very shallow.
You’re counting the metres as they are dropping… 2m… 1.9m.
As the sun sets, it’s good to nose into Brighton Marina for the night. Now what a great day that’s been! We left Salcombe at 7am this morning, it’s about 8pm now, we’ve covered a lot of sea miles and a really good day. Flat, calm sea, blue skies, beautiful day although a bit cold, cruised along the Jurassic Coast, through the Solent and here to Brighton. Amazing day, time for a beer!
