I for one never find your Videos boring, I like your shooting sessions and accuracy testing in the filmed portions of your tests. I find that most accuracy errors are the ones that all of us make, Barrel quality and the quality of components is demonstrated in your Targets and your video content is just a plus out on the range. You could just do a (Skip It) like you did a while back in one of your reloading instruction videos. However I enjoy your video content. People watch your videos no matter what,, we are shooters and we are interested in that stuff.. Keep up the good work,, You are Not Boring your audience. Dave

So, I watched both videos and wanted to give you some tips. If your shooting for accuracy your gonna need to take a few extra steps. As soon as you get the rifle you need to clean it thoroughly as you state. Then do a different break in process. Get about 200rds of some basic cheap ammo. Load a magazine with 20rds. Fire one round and then run a solvent soaked bore snake through the bore. Continue with the 20rds cleaning after every shot. Next load more mags with 10rds each. Rapid fire the 10rds and clean after each magazine dump. After you've done this about 10 times, do a cleaning and then fire your remaining ammo in that same range session. This will get your barrel almost broken in. At this point your barrel will be able to be used for accuracy testing. Without doing this all your doing is slowly breaking in your barrel with your test loads and it will not favor any of them, because your simply improving consistently due to the smoothing out of machining imperfections within the bore. I know you fired about 100rds for break in but The process will take much longer without cleaning between shots because the carbon layer protects the bore from being polished by the shots. A stainless barrel can take about 300rds to break in before a real load test can be performed. Also note that a loose flash suppressor can drastically change the harmonics of the barrel and destroy accuracy. Everything at the end of the muzzle must be tight and completely concentric because that area is the final release point for the projectile and dictates accuracy more than any other portion of your rifle. I'm willing to bet that after your testing you could take one of your original loads from video 1, fire a fowling shot and then fire a 5 shot group with that load and it would group at about half the MOA it originally did. Aside from that, I think your barrel is completely acceptable like you said. It will get better and be more responsive to load variations as you run it. Great video, and thanks a lot.

JRB love the videos. I like the "boring" videos with the shooting footage a little more though. But all are great. JRB please get yourself a premium AR barrel. Try a Krieger or similar. Your dedication, load development, components used and all the time you put into it shooting footage and editing is just to quality to shoot in a budget barrel all the time. Either way though, great video.

What you have proven here is that “Shooter Grade” barrels are, even with the best components, still shooter grade. I personally highly value this kind of empirical testing because it really does establish a real-world baseline. I would like to see what barrel gives the best accuracy per dollar.

I love the 69gr SIERRAs, I get fair accuracy from benchmark and H4895, but my best ever is 24.5 BL-C2. My PSA barrel is a 1n8 16". I hear the wyled barrels are chambered for better accuracy. Finding a barrel seems to be a problem unless you want to back order one and wait. I really like your tests and always learn something. You never bore me.

You're right, the 6920 has some accuracy potential. I was a little disappointed in the accuracy of mine at first. My very best 100 yard groups were ~2" using purchased match-grade ammo. Over the years I started reloading. I threw a floated handguard on the Colt, and eventually a nice trigger. I'll be damned if that sucker isn't shooting ~1 MOA now with my 55 grain handloads, and ~.5 MOA with my 77 SMK loads. I also own a 20" WOA upper, chambered in Wylde. At 100 yards, it groups about the same as the Colt. The extra barrel length helps me reach out much further. It's interesting how the 77 SMK's don't care much about jump. Fantastic bullet.

My PSA loved 55vmax w/ W748. It was around a 1/2" It only like boat tail bullets. I have a fancy pants white oak and it's a shooter. It will only shoot flat base bullets well. Really interesting video, I can see you put a lot of work into testing both and you provided a bunch of information on all sorts of variables. My question would be what twist rate is the colts barrel? It may be worth keeping these 1:7 barrels if the colt has a slower twist. Maybe try the sierra 77 Gr match king between the colt and the stoner see if it's worth keeping a 1:7 barrel around? Great videos man keep them coming!
@JohnnysReloadingBench

Unfortunately the Colt is a 1:7 as well! I say "unfortunately"...but I really prefer shooting heavy bullets so I am glad they're all 1:7. It would be nice to have a slower twits to test with, though.

To reduce the influence of outliers, you may want to use the median group size instead of the average group size. You can see in the 69gr bullet test the AR Stoner had 2 groups around 1.5" vs 2 groups of about 1.75" for the PSA. When you use the average, the outliers skew the data a lot more. In this case, iirc, the PSA had a slightly better average (1.70") vs 1.73" for the Stoner. The 1.56" groups of the Stoner get really watered down and diluted by the "bad" groups.

With a 55-grain bullet and a 1:7 twist barrel, I'd expect the accuracy to be kind of erratic, especially with less-than-premium bullets. At 3000 fps, out of a 1:7 barrel, they are really spinning fast. The 1:7 barrels were designed to be used with the the lower velocities of the 62-grain bullets and above. if you want the best accuracy out of the 55-grain bullets, go with a 1:9 barrel, and keep the velocity at 2900 fps or higher. I'm not surprised that you got the best accuracy out of the SMKs, that's been my experience as well, in nearly all calibers.

I enjoy the videos, but since I don't really reload I was really looking for this info--> 13:36-14:00 which barrel was better? - thanks for doing the work. I feel better about my freedom barrel now for just a take to the range shooter. I can't remember what you said about the trigger type in the test lower, and would like to see them on a lead sled or something that would help take even more human error out, but your test are done in similar fashion to how I shoot most of the time when not off hand (with front rest and rear bag) so that's ok. Thanks for posting i know it took a lot of work to get all the "research" done and get it posted for the rest of us.

You need to go white oak or BCM enhanced for barrels. They both have great harmonics, light weight, and eat almost everything you run through them for half the price of so called Match barrels I won't mention. If you're not getting 1" or better average groups with those you got other issues. My 14.5" BCM enhanced even puts Tula right at 1" feed it quality 69 plus match and you can't tell the holes apart.

My 18 inch Stainless PSA barrel in 6.5 Grendel didn't shoot all that well either... I yanked it put in a 20 inch Proof Research match barrel and life's been great. Easily went from a 2 inch gun to a half to three quarters of an inch gun. PSA makes some good budget guns and if you're just shooting steel or needing a gun for home defense it's a great option but for shooting groups not so much.

I appreciate the fact that you load all your own ammo but you are doing a review of a barrel and I would have liked to see you use a box of high quality commercial pre-made ammo as well, just to rule out the home loaded aspect of your ammo. Also wanted to add that your last video shows you using a bipod and every shot I noticed you re-raising your back end so that might account for variability. A full tripod to lock down the gun would eliminate any user/shooter error and show just what is happening with the barrel and the ammo combo. Thanks for posting this anyway but this methodology kind of discredits any results that you show IMO.
