I also love Then There Were Three, it has so much beautiful Tony Banks Moments (I play piano), for example the Intro of Burning Rope is as good as the Intro of Firth Of Fifth. To be honest, Pop Music is no bad thing, and I believe that if Genesis would have continued with Gabriel they would have grown into unpopularity. End of the seventies, the punk era began, noone listened to Prog Rock at all, times changed. We have to be happy that we have a decade of prog music, but it is the same as with the 80s: If they lasted longer, they were not that peculiar and beloved. Actually, I also like Peter Gabriel more, but Phil has a great voice, and for me, there is no bad and good Genesis, this is still the same band. I wouldn't go so far to put I Can't dance on the same stage as Supper's Ready, but the thing is, that I Can't dance is a great song in its own legacy. Many bands would be proud if they wrote it. I love that this band is so divers in their sound. The Same with pink floyd (although they have a special, personal sound like Genesis, they also made various progressions), after everyone got to know how egoistic Waters actually was and after his retirement off of Floyd, the Band also continued. High Hopes, for example, is my favourite Pink Floyd Song together with Pigs (three different ones). The Difference is however, that, for me, Waters was never a good singer, so I loved the later albums because Gilmour sang them. Phil on the other hand is not only a good drummer but a great singer (of course, he isn't John Farnham or Sting, but for a drummer, he can sing very good). I also like about Phil that he is, not like Waters, a funny, always seemingly happy person enjoying the music he creates. And Peter turned his musical style towards Pop too! And everyone seems to be happy with it. Why can't Genesis do the same?

@@leonardsimonis2376 I agree, ATTWT is just a great album that seems to fly under the radar for some reason. Extraordinary video, man. Even though I like The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway more than Selling England By the Pound, I would have also put Selling England By the Pound as the prog album to start with because it's more accesible. The Lamb is an album you would listen to after you're in love with prog. Same goes for Fragile. I prefer Close to the Edge, but I think Fragile is more accessible. Pink Floyd, it can either be Wish You Were Here or Dark Side of the Moon. I think they would both do the job, and they are both phenomenal and pretty accessible. In the Court of the Crimson King is the album that started it all. So you obviously have to listen to it when you're getting into prog. I wish you would have mentioned Epitaph when you talked about that album. I get a boner every time I listen to that song. By the way, I think the vast majority of people who hate prog are the ones who don't bother giving it a shot. It's very complex music. You're not gonna get it straight away. The switch from prog Genesis to pop Genesis isn't nearly as black and white as Gabriel v Collins. Trick of the Tail and Wind and Wuthering are pure prog. And then it wasn't an immediate shift but rather an evolution to the pop side, led by Tony Banks more than anyone else. If you have to make a division between prog and pop Genesis, it's Hackett leaving after WaW that brought the change.

Wadsmitter No it is not completely. Wether you like it better or not and why is completely subjective. But to determine bad from good, worst to best, there's a lot of tangible and objective stuff. Things such as historical background, technique, sales (which by some critics it is not valuable criteria), influence, and it goes on and on. If you were to release a song such as Rapper's Delight as of today, with no innovation whatsoever, how would you justify it? Even if Rapper's Delight was a *turning point* at the time, your similar song will not mean as much if anything at all today, therefore making it less important (or worse). But at the end of the day, you can like your song better than Rapper's Delight which gives music a subjective trait.

I definitely think Fragile is a good way to go for a lot of people. Not only is it sensational music, but it has that bright, typically upbeat sound typical of Yes. Prog can be quite doom and gloom, but Yes are emotionally touching without being overly dramatic or dark. Generally speaking, of course. The Yes Album took me a little time to appreciate, but Fragile grabbed me on a first listen. Rarely do I enjoy albums on first listens as much as I did Fragile. It's very melodic even in the instrumental passages and the bass has a lot of presence on Yes records.

Love Moving Pictures by Rush and agree it is a very easy way to lean into the genre BUT it isn't that proggy. Their albums "A Farewell to Kings" or "Hemispheres" are A LOT more progressive. Moving Pictures is bascially hardrock and New Wave with some progressive elements. Also: Don't hate on Phil Collins.. Especially the early albums after Peter Gabriel left contain awesome work!

My top 10 albums are: (if someone is interested) 1- Jethro Tull - Thick as a Brick (1972) 2- Genesis - Wind & Wuthering (1976) 3- Yes - Going for the One (1977) 4- King Crimson - Red (1974) 5- Emerson, Lake & Palmer - Tarkus (1971) 6- Emerson, Lake & Palmer - Brain Salad Surgery (1973) --- had to include both albums 7- Jon Anderson - Olias of Sunhillow (1976) 8- Steve Hackett - Voyage of the Acolyte (1975) 9- Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon (1973) 10- Mike Oldfield - Tubular Bells (1973) I puzzle how could so many unbelievably beautiful, colourful, powerful and unique masterpieces get produced under just 6 years...

I had been listening to "Selling England by the Pound" for 20 years before I realised one of its most brilliant aspects: the album is designed organically, like a house by Frank Lloyd Wright. Now, Peter Gabriel's music tends to be organically designed, too, so that what we hear Must be where he places it. Same with Kate Bush songs, and Thomas Dolby. Any weirdness is not just for its own sake; those noises belong there, in order to tell each song's story. But what I refer to with "Selling England..." is that the closing melody and rhythm are the same as the opening A Capella melody that Pete sings on Side One. To open the album and then close it with the same music is to bring the music full circle. And the record, the vinyl medium in which the music is engraved, is itself a circle. Therefore, Genesis has given us an album in which form and function are one. This phrase was one of architect Wright's most famous declarations. It was a furtherance of his great teacher's phrase that "form must follow function". (Louis Sullivan) THAT's how intelligent and imaginative Genesis was, with Gabriel in its ranks.

Dude IMO hemispheres>moving pictures. Also relayer and close to the edge are incredible on their own. And Animals>wish you where here. Great video. I know this is more of a beginners video, so hope someone else can listen to these others albums and say what they think :))) all hail prog!

Hey Oliver, brand new viewer, watched your guide to Eno and then both Bowie videos as well, and really enjoyed those. Then I'm watching this one. And you say "Firth Of Firth"? Come on, "Firth Of FIFTH"! Or, "Firth Of 5th", just to help you remember. 😁 And, okay, I get it about Phil Collins, he can grate, annoy, irritate ... and generally want to make some people wanna stab themselves in the ears with knitting needles. And I REALLY dislike how he seems to have a bug up his ass toward his former bandmate Steve Hackett. But I put Phil in the top 5 best drummers, ever, just based on what he did on Selling England, The Lamb, and his playing with Brand X (Billy Cobham tops the list, imho.) I give you a LOT of credit for distilling an "Intro to classic prog" list down to FIVE ALBUMS!! (WTF?!) Of course, people will dispute what you EXCLUDE, but it's FIVE ALBUMS!! But what great albums. Anyway, just wanted to say from one music lover to another, I love the concept of your channel, and can appreciate your drum skills on the Bowie tribute (" ... is that the host of this channel ... fuck, yeah, good job, Oliver!"). So I am a new subscriber. Rock on, man!

Pink Floyd is my favourite band of all time, and Wish You Were Here is absolutely their best album ever. The opening of 'Shine On' actually uses a wine glass harp alongside Rick's synths. Look for their rejected piece 'Wine Glasses' on KZitem. It's the opening of 'Shine On', and made entirely with a wine glass harp. You are doing a fantastic job, sir. Hats off. I subscribed halfway through your Aphex Twin video.

Agree with you that Wish You Were Here is a better listen than Dark Side of the Moon, I would have added one of the ELP albums, probably Tarkus as another angle on folks looking to get into classic prog, but with so much excellent musicianship it is difficult to decide.

Prog is where all the great musicians are in rock music these days. For a while Jazz Fusion had the best, but it is Prog now. Speaking of Jazz Fusion, I just Saw the Dixie Dregs reforming with the original lineup after 40 years. Fantastic stuff.

In the boredom of lockdown, I've been having imaginary conversations with myself as to how I'd describe Prog to my granddaughter (11, and currently not the least interested) if the time ever comes, and what albums I'd recommend. Genesis is a toughie, as I always found SEBTP a bit too polished, but if I had to choose one, that might have to be it. Personally, I always felt that Rush were a hard rock band with pretensions. I owned 2112 for about a week, listened to it a couple of times then brought it into school, thrust it into someone's hands and said, "Here, you might like this". I'd put Van Der Graaf Generator's Pawn Hearts or Still Life in there before Rush, and possibly Gentle Giant's Free Hand. But, hey, it's a big church.

I can’t say that I can argue with this list... All excellent choices. If I made any changes to this list, I would trade out “Selling England” to the lamb lies down on Broadway. And I might trade rush out with an ELP offering. But either way, a great prog list.

Nice list. Most of the comments list alternate albums of these influential artists. For other bands I'd include would be releases by Renaissance, unbelievable crystal clear vocals, and Emerson Lake and Palmer, keyboard perfection. Maybe a video of top progressive rock artists in general would be apropos.

Here is my list 1) Operation Mindcrime by Queensryche 2) Images and Words by Dream Theater 3) 2112 by Rush 4) In the Court of the Crimson King by King Crimson 5) Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd My reasoning on this list is that to me, the more modern prog/metal is easier to get into than the earlier 'heavy' prog that you get in a lot of Rush, Yes and King Crimson albums. And while I am no Phil Collins fan, I think the track 'Land of Confusion' is brilliant. Check out Disturb's version if you can't bring yourself to listen to Phil.

The oil crisis of 1973 had a huge impact on the music industry - there was a shortage of vinyl, being a bi-product of the oil industry. This caused record companies to cut back artist rostas, and this changed taste.
