I have a 62 rosewood neck Jazz, and a 57 RI P bass with maple neck - albeit forty one years old - I HATE the Jazz neck at headstock. It’s too narrow, especially if you’ve been playing a P bass. I would go P bass , Rick 4001, Carvin fretless - The most underrated basses ever made - and an Alvarez as top four for different tones , and you can’t mistake the difference in tone of each.

For me, when I see a T-bird I always think about SOAD bass player Shavo Odadjian. about the list, stingrays are always my number 1, I love how they sound, how they look and how they feel, the perfect pickup spot for plucking for me, just feel home playing it. another thing that I like on MM basses is the quality consistency, It's very rare to find a bad stingray no matter the year you get.

I really appreciate the way Ian described the drawbacks of the Stingray. I had one and I couldn't figure out why I didn't love it. It sounded so cool by itself, but it didn't sit right in the mix for the style of music I play. I ended up trading it toward a G & L L-2500, which has 2 pickups and a more mellow sound, but could get closer to the Stingray when you flip the active switch, move to the bridge pickup, and boost the treble. But I didn't want that sound all the time, and the Stingray is always "ON". Great video!

I played a Gibson Ripper during the latter 1970s. It was designed to produce a variety of useful tones and had a great neck. The downside was that Gibson's QC was really bad and the bass became basically unplayable in about five years. The varitone switch allowed the pickups to be played 1. both in series 2. bridge pickup only 3. both pickups in parallel which like a really muscular Jazz Bass 4. both pickups wired out of phase.. In addition, there was what Gibson called a "presence" control which was basically a midrange cut control. Eventhough it is a mess, I still have it for the memories.

Love the Rick discussion and Spacehog too! I had a new Jetglo Rickenbacker 4001 back in 1975. It was the most rockin' look every, but unfortunately, my bass had a super-thin floppy neck and never really sounded great. There was a low-cut filter on the bridge pickup back in those days that made that pickup sound extra wimpy. In the early 80's I sold it and missed the idea of it. A few years later, I happened to see a purple 4001 that was a few years older hanging in a guitar shop in San Francisco (it was the shop that used to be a laundromat). It had herringbone binding and the crushed sparkly inlays. I plugged that one in, and all of a sudden, I understood what the Rick was supposed to be! But the store knew that too, and it was major bucks. In recent years, I've played newer Ricks most of which have been really great. Last year I bought a new Jetglo 4003s and it's been great! Tried to get a V63 with the split horseshoe and toaster pickups, but never found one. I noticed that Rick has a listing to sell their horseshoe pickup on their site, but it was never in stock until Feb this year. Got it, haven't put it in yet, but really looking forward to it!

Great vid as always guys! Just some insight from personal experience when it comes to Stingrays; the secret sauce I’ve found is in a feature that only the fivers possess. The Series/Parallel toggle. I use my Stingray 5 in series mode only and it instantly brings down the glassy treble and boomy bass and sits more in the middle like a P bass. I completely agree with you guys on the fact that a Stingray more pokes through the mix than sits when in its standard parallel wiring but in series it’s a whole other bass. I have a Jazz, P, Dingwall and Stingray 5 and switching the ray from parallel to series transforms it from the last bass I’d pick up to the first. I wish the fours had the same feature. Give it a shot!

I have an Ernie Ball Music Man Stingray HH that I bought new in 2018. It's got both the bridge and neck pickups, and dudes, it's the most versatile bass I own. It has a 5 position switch that allows you to use 5 different configurations with those two pickups. That combined with the active electronics allows me to create what seems like an infinite number of sounds. Oh, and the roasted maple neck! It feels like petrified wood! In a good way! Combine all that with a Darkglass compressor, an HX Stomp, and a Quilter amp, and boom. I also own vintage Jazz and Telecaster basses which I love.

It was mentioned below, but bears repeating: Paul's #1 Hofner 'Violin bass', the first one which he bought around 1960, and which was stolen out of his tour van in the early 70s, (playing with Wings) was finally returned to him in February 2024, after being missing for 50+ years! I bet he was stoked! I made my living on 3 of those 5 basses for around 30 years. Although I also played a 'wild card' which was a beautiful all mahogany neck-through, long scale fretless which was one of the first 5 prototype electric guitars that Bernardo Rico built in '73 or thereabouts in his guitar shop in LA, long before he 'made it big'. The model was called a Seagull, and Clapton was shown in an infamous magazine advert playing one ("Guess Who's Playing BC Rich?"). I had that bass for several decades; with its pair of phenomenal Bartolini / Hi-A humbuckers it had a sound which was quite different from the ubiquitous Fender Jazz! I played downtown clubs in NYC for about 10 years on that Rich. All those years I almost never used an amp; the bass sounded so good I used to just plug straight into the board... :) The one bass that I've never owned in your selection and kinda wished that I did was the Stingray. Oh well... can't have everything.

My top 5 in order 1) Alembic series I/II (couldn't decide between them but the differences are mostly cosmetic anyway) 2) Rickenbacker 4001S/RM1999 (A ric without the annoying binding? Say no more) 3) P-Bass (The original. What else can I say?) 4) J-Bass (Not a fan but I can't deny that it's iconic) 5) Gibson EB-0 (Jack Bruce or that Jackson 5 sound plus it looks amazing) I know that it's mentioned in the video but I still feel like you guys did the Alembic dirty. It's the first active bass in history and was the originator of boutique basses. Not to mention that it was used by guys like John Entwhistle, Stanley Clarke, Phil Lesh, John Mcvie, Cliff Burton, Greg Lake, and John Paul Jones. At first I had serious doubts about the series 1 solely due to price but then one day I saw one on sale at a local music store. I thought that there was no way this could earn that kind of price tag; there was no way it sounded or played better than my fender custom shop jazz bass. I sat down to play it and ended up buying the series 1 on the spot for $5k. At the time, I was using the jazz bass as my main even though I had a ric which I preferred to play. On that day, I swore I would never play a jazz bass ever again and gave mine away to a friend(I still love my P-bass though). Also, there's something I wanted to add about your observation on ric users being lead singers. Although, Chris Squire wasn't the lead singer of Yes he was actually still a formally trained singer which means there's a chance he could have been their lead if Jon wasn't in the band. Some of their tracks actually has Chris in the background singing notes HIGHER than Jon. Someone more knowledgeable than me should search this up but before Yes formed, I believe Chris was actually lead singers along with someone else in his earlier band named The Syn. If you wanted to check out how Yes would have sounded with Chris as lead singer, just look up the video for 'Hold out your hand' from his solo album.

For my band, I use my Rickenbacker 4003 for our standard tuned stuff (drop d) and a Stingray 5 for our heavier stuff (drop A). Both are very different sounding, but since those are the only two tunings we use, it makes for a good change of pace.

McCartney's Rickenbacker was his main bass from 1965 to about 1978 when he got his Yamaha BB1200. The great Leon Sylvers played a Rickenbacker on hits by Shalamar and the Whispers. Louis Johnson played a BB1200 on Billie Jean.

Love my MM Stingray 4. My absolute fave. Paul Denman showed that a Music Man can sit well in a mix in early Sade tracks.

I almost followed Scott's advice on purchasing order of basses! I started with a Fender P Bass, figured start at the beginning. Then I found a really fun, relatively inexpensive Hofner Violin bass, so grabbed that one. Than saved up (sort of) and grabbed a classic Rickenbacker 4001. I love them all for different reasons. Flatwounds on all three!

You should have made the blindfold test for people watching. - You could have played offscreen - Pick or fingers, flatwound or rounds, same amp, same settings . Blue Note magazine used to have a “ Blindfold Test “ for jazzers to tell which musicians were playing on any given album. Those were the vinyl days . McCartney put the 4001 Rick bass on the radar. Nobody was using a Rick bass before Paul. Now many iconic bass players are playing Ricks …
