At 58 years old I'm just starting my journey with chess. So much to learn. I already knew the basics, the names of the pieces, how they moved etc... But from there I was/am lost. It's addictive though, and every time I win a game it makes me want to play more. Even when I lose, I learn. Thanks for making these videos so I can continue to learn how to play better chess.

3rd trap is called the Elephant Trap. 4th trap Qa5 is the Cambridge Springs Variation. The 5th trap is Lasker's Trap. There are some other traps a little later in the game around moves 10-14 in the queens Gambit but mostly it's just a safe opening that gives you good endings and king safety.

In minute 1:50 you get a knight, not a rook. After the move queen to f3 the opponent plays knight to c6. Queen captures for check and then black moves his bishop to d7 - defending the king and at the same time defending the rook with his queen.
@RONIN6207
2 жыл бұрын
Yes, my sentiments exactly! The "Knight to c6 move" is a vacating sacrifice. Which allows a "discovered protection" for the Rook, when the Bishop comes to d7. Better to lose 3 points instead of 5.

This video really helped me. I just wanted to mention that for the first trap, I think there’s a way out of losing the rook as black. After Qf3, black can sacrifice the knight to save the rook. After Qxc6+, black plays Bd7.

The first trap there is an error. If the queen goes to f3 to threaten the rook, black can play knight to c6. If the queen takes knight black can move bishop to d7 and then the rook is safe. So he actually can stop the rook from being taken

In trap 1, you said after White plays Qf3 there is no way for Black to save the rook. Actually, Nc6 sacrifices a knight to save the rook. If Qxc6+, then Bd7 covers the Black king and reveals a lifeline of protection to the Black rook from the Black queen. White still enjoys a better position with +2 pt. material advantage...but the rook is saved, and Black can fight on.

The last trap is risky. At 12:10, I think that dxe3 is a mistake because there is Qa4+. Whatever black response is, white will be up with a pawn, or worse, a bishop. This is how i see it. 1.Qa4+, Nc6 2.Bxb4, exf2+ 3.Kxf2 or, 1.Qa4+, Bd7 2.Qxb4, exd2+ 3.Nxd2 or, 1.Qa4+, c6 2.Qxb4, exd2+ 3.Nxd2 or, Worse response: 1.Qa4+, Qd7 2.Qxd7+, Bxd7 3.Bxb4, exf2+ 4.Kxf2

There actually is a lobe for black after queen to F3. Knight to C6. Then when white takes Knight, Bishop to D7. That allows blacks queen to backup there rook. If white takes the rook then white also loses a queen. So, you can save the rook. But you give up a knight. Or, you lose the rook but win the queen.
