Great video! Hmm.. for me I mainly do 3rd person limited. But also switch to 2nd person. Swordsfall is written a bit like a history book. It's guided by the invisible biases of the author. I'm always thinking about how little I want the reader to know, balanced by how little the author knows. I'll have to think about a few sentences for this exercise, though I have used a few of those types on World Anvil already.

I write in third person omniscient for my campaign. 3rd limited makes me think of...warhammer 40k? The idea of writing narration in first person is something I hadn't really considered. Maybe I should try it.

I think I’ll have excerpts from a history textbook pop up occasionally. The story takes place in a magic school so it is thematically fitting but I don’t think I’ll actually have someone reading it.

The best use of matching Style to World is the Quiller novels by Adam Hall AKA Elliston Trevor. Quiller is the code name for a British spy and the first-person perspective keeps the action and suspense immediate. An excellent choice for gritty spy drama.

Well, obviously, a "half'ifth" is a coloquialism for "one part in ten"'; it's a contraction of "half-fifth".

I use 3rd person omniscient but also am thinking about 1st person limited and maybe epistolary style. However, would the fourth style include all books (myths, legends, reference books, historical letters, poems/songs/inside novels), music and movies/shows? And I didn't include prophecies, which if you consider all above, then you'd have to include them! While I haven't completely explored WorldAnvil, I love it and hope to discover more in 2019! And I'll ask later about giving different styles in the same article. I just want to write them first before either screwing with perfection or doing it and then messing it up. Janet, please keep up the videos and the good work!

Epistolary style includes all in-world documentation - so yes, written sources of Myths (e.g. the verbatim text of Ovid's "Metamorphoses") would be included, but a word of mouth rendering of the story as a cultural idea (e.g. the story of Pygmalion and Galatea, which we see as a repeating cultural concept in our world, reworked among others by G. F Handel in his opera "Acis and Galatea", in G. B. Shaw's "Pygmalion" and by Rogers and Hammerstein in "My Fair Lady") would be Myths and Legends. Does that make sense? Honestly, the lines are very thin - all these concepts merge together and it's only in discussing them like this that we need to make distinctions. For practical applications, you can very much do as you like... as long as you have fun! Can't wait to see your world on World Anvil! Grab you hammer, @Hunter! :D P.S. Prophecies are a knotty problem? Are they recorded somehow? They maybe they're Epistalory... Otherwise, they might be myth and legend, especially if they're a composite part of a bigger legend... You could also use narrative prose to describe them... Lots of ways to approach! :D

@@WorldAnvil Janet, thank you for reading and commenting! I appreciate the comment from a view of knowledge. I thought about why I liked the epistolary style and wanted more information on it. I do understand what you said. I do have my prophecies written down and I also created a page about it. My world has no introduction yet. However, I am using Earth (everything is the same) for my planet/world. What I've included in my Earth is the fact magic is real and so is all the beings and species that are apart of it. It is on WorldAnvil as Earth, Magic Realm, and Santa's Village. Please follow my world and give me some critiques for polishing or adding styles of worldbuilding writing. Not all are published but keep checking in as I write more articles in 2019!

Janet, I have more articles written in my world. Go check it out! It is not all done. Still trying to implement ways to use several styles from this video. But I have gotten it more organized and have added more information on my characters. WIP for sure! Gotta love it when things come together!

I feel 1st Person Limited has a lot more drawbacks than you stated. It can make the world feel small, and does not lend itself to having multiple major characters. It also is the style that most often has the main character being a type of wish fulfillment of the author. It also suffers the most from potential alienation of the reader if your narrator is someone the reader dislikes. For example, in the Wheel of Time, you can dislike Perrin but still enjoy the series. If Wheel of Time was written in first person limited from Perrin's pov, very few people would have continued with the series for very long.

Kitsune's Den I think that would be cool. I remember this one book had the narrator be a historian studying the events in the story so they knew most of the stuff but not all

First person omniscient is something I try sometimes, with variate degrees of failure. That character narrator which has the peculiarity or being able to know what other people are thinking (in the most modest version) or the right answer for any question explicitly formulated (in the most extreme cases). Maybe a magical thing limited in time, like a Divination spell, or a natural talent that character has (or believe to have). Is limited omniscience, since it only applies to the questions raised by the character narrator. But that is a limitation shared whit the third person omniscient.
