I'm not a professional mechanic, but I have 6 cars at home with the wife and kids. If I had to pay a mechanic for everything, I'd go broke. Every guy should learn to do the basics, like oil change, brakes, fix a flat, etc. Most of the things I learned, I learned from youtube or a service manual. It's a great feeling when you do the work and know it is done right and you still have money in your pocket.

I completely disagree with this. We have A LOT of problems in the modern world and we sure as hell won't be able to solve them if we're not talking to each other about them. A well tuned society requires people to be social and work with each other in a variety of ways in order to move the whole thing forward. Otherwise we're just spinning our wheels and that is pointless. Fact is, we have to talk AND do.

I have worked in mechanical repair & now I work in collision repair. I love watching the cars that come in all smashed up, leaving looking like they are brand new. It is a satisfying process. & being a female I was tired of being ripped of by some (not all) mechanic facilities because of my own ignorance of cars. So I decided I was going to learn & be able to make more informed decisions on my own vehicle's repairs.

Yep. When I worked cars I spent 6 days a week in independent shops freelancing, then 6 nights a week in my own back yard shop. Sometimes you even forget to eat. It was wearing me down so I raised my rates to a ridiculous amount. That didn't stop them. The crappy cars and trucks kept coming. I didn't even have time to work what I loved, my old trucks. I had shop owners that couldn't afford to hire me threaten me and accuse me of stealing their customers. Then one day I had enough. I quit going to other shops and told everyone if they brought their cars toy house I would have them impounded. I went back to the trucking industry and took a job as a truck mechanic. Now I work less, make more money, have days off, vacations, health insurance. I can tell you being a mechanic you will never go hungry, but you have to love it. It's not a job, it is a lifestyle.

Life lesson here. No matter what job you have, even sitting in a small cubicle, do the job with purpose and with an end result in mind. If you are not sure what that end result should be or how to do it (winging it) then you should focus on it being complete and right. The vision of the end result will form as you work on it. Second, learn to suffer lose well. Some jobs you don't make money on. But whatever you do don't cut corners to make up for it. Just do the right thing and learn lessons from it. We actually pay money to others to be taught how to do things. Look at jobs that lose you money as going to school. "I paid good money to learn good lessons." This will keep you motivated and moving in the right direction. In the end you will prosper.
