Arkham City spat upon the character of Ra's Al Ghul. They turned him into a joke of a villain. Batman finds him, beats him easily, leaves him a pathetic mess, and then he comes back for a predictable plot twist, and dies immediately after making a big monologue.

@@CreekGamingMontages if you think the character is more interesting just because they can die in the game, then we are never going to agree. As for Liam Neeson, he was a great depiction of the character. I think you only appreciate superficial elements of the character. Liam Neeson's depiction lacks the pit yes, but he acts exactly how the character is traditionally depicted in his best storylines. He captures the soul of the character in a way that Arkham City never came close to.

@@YeboiAgnus Riddler was done great, Deathstroke was mishandled in both Origins and Knight. they made him too small time in Origins, he's taken down by a rookie Batman in 1 shot, and never comes back for a round 2. And Knight, he only fights him in a tank. Still, it makes sense for Batman to not fight him head on, because after a night of non-stop bullshit and exhaustion, there's no reasonable way he could take down Deathstroke. Ra’s al Ghul was one of my favorites. He was tired of getting resurrected for centuries and deep down he wanted it to end, but at the same time, Ra’s was addicted to the Lazures pit. He always saw Batman as his successor and tried everything to make Bruce join his side, and when Bruce refused, he got so insane to the point that he even attempted at killing his own daughter. In the Season of Infamy we saw if we don’t save Ra’s, deep inside he becomes happy. Ra’s said to Batman, “dete...cti..ve, pro..ud of yo..u” which I think is the most emotional line he said in his arc and this really made me care for Ra’s. He was actually proud that Bruce put an end to his resurrection and this showed the good Ra’s within that monster. Definitely one of the best villains! Btw have you seen those Talia al Ghul easter eggs in Knight? 1. Her body is missing and is not in the cold chamber 2. If you resurrect Ra’s, in the same hospital, he makes a secret tape talking to Talia and how he wants her to capture and bring Batman to him I think Talia al Ghul is actually alive and I would appreciate if you could investigate it and maybe make a video talking about this mystery.

This is my ranking of all 29 villians within the series (note that I don't count Catwoman or Azrael as villains, but I do count Mr. Freeze, even if he helps out Batman more than Azrael): 29. Electrocutioner (absolutely nothing memorable or interesting about him; literally a joke of a character) 28. Deacon Blackfire (very limited screen time, so very forgetabble) 27. Anarky (very limited screen time, so very forgetabble) 26. Cooperhead (copycat Scarecrow, so very forgetabble) 25. Shiva (very forgetabble, but still a decent boss fight in Origins; also nicely used in the Initiation DLC) 24. Solomon Grundy (more or less memorable boss fight in City, very limited screen time) 23. Proffesor Pyg (memorable side mission in Knight and overall very creepy, but also very limited screen time) 22. Victor Zsasz (very creepy in both Asylum and City, which makes him somewhat memorable despite his limited screen time) 21. Hush (well used in City, totally wasted in Knight) 20. Man-Bat (memorable jump scares, but very limited screen time) 19. Deadshot (not too memorable in either Origins, Origins Blackgate or City, so not that much too criticize either; at least he was a main character in Assault on Arkham) 18. Firefly (not too memorable in either Origins or Knight, so not that much too criticize either; overalll an "OK" villain) 17. Mad Hatter (very memorable for the limited screen time he had) 16. Black Mask (memorable in Origins - even if it was Joker in disguise - and Origins Blackgate; also used well as a minor villain in City and Knight's Red Hood DLC) 15. Hugo Strange (very little screen time and killed off too quickly) 14. Clayface (very little screen time, but still memorable final boss fight in City and also nice plot twist) 13. Bane (very memorable in Origins, quite forgetable in Asylum and City - one of the few things that Origins did right compared to the rest of the series) 12. Killer Croc (memorable boss fight in Asylum and very relatable in Knight) 11/10. Penguin/Two-Face (really can't decide between the two: both are accurate to the comics, but there isn't anything too memorable about them, nor is there anything to criticize; can't love them, but can't hate them either) 9. Deathstroke (memorable boss fight and even fun to play as in Origins, but nothing else to say; totally wasted in Knight) 8. Arkham Knight (a compelling main villain in Knight; no idea why people hate him so much; perhaps if Rocksteady hadn't been building up the hype regarding his identity, his unmasking scene would have been less disappointing and people would come to appreciate him more) 7. Poison Ivy (very well used in Asylum and it was interesting to see her working alongside Batman in Knight, even sacrificing her life to save Gotham - that's a really great redemption arc and great use of the character in a game already filled with other villains) 6. Ra's Al Ghul (very well used in both City and Knight) 5. Harley Quinn (really well used in all the games: a secondary villain with not that much screen time or that big of a threat, but who stil manages to leave an impression on you and overall just a reccuring threat for Batman to face; also really fun to play as in Knight) 4. Riddler (annoying and very repetitive, just like he is supposed to be: a constant pain in Batman's ass; Rocksteady really nailed his character) 3. Scarecrow (some of the best boss fights in the series (in Asylum) and quite a compelling and threatening main villain in Knight; I just love how he was used in Knight, despite not having that much screen time) 2. Mr. Freeze (very well used in City and Knight, as he actually helps out Batman and they both show to have great respect for one another; also "cool" origin story in the Origins DLC, and easily the best boss fight in the series (in City); overall a really symphatetic and relatable villian) 1. Joker (quite overused, especially in Origins (they could have easily written him out, or at least not make him the main villian, similar to City), but still one of the best aspects of the entire series; say what you want about his role in Knight, but he was easily one of the highlights of the game, especially for comedic purposes)

One of my favorite things about Origins was how it set up City beautifully with Hugo Strange easter eggs and Lady Shiva's storyline. In the world you can find Strange is looking for test subjects (including Alberto Falcone who becomes Holiday thanks to Strange's manipulation) that will eventually help him create a psychological profile for Batman, deduce Batman is Bruce Wayne, and offer that information on the dark web which brings him the attention of the League of Assassins. Meanwhile Shiva is sent as a scout to see if Batman is a worthy successor to Rā's. Clearly Bane knows about Rā's, so maybe he was also considered as a successor in the past like Batman and Hugo Strange. Shiva also convinces Quincy Sharp to reopen Arkham Asylum clearly meaning Arkham City was Rā's plan from the beginning, even before he met Batman. The League gives Sharp a platform, Sharp hires Hugo Strange at some point, Hugo experiments on inmates, begins drugging Quincy Sharp, and lobotomizes patients therefore creating the lunatics from Asylum. Hugo discovers Batman's identity, and is identified as a possible successor. Along the way Strange creates the Holiday killer, mentors Harleen Quinzel, and creates the most annoying type of enemy in Asylum.

It's still untrue that Batman would have beaten Scarecrow easily at Ace Chemicals if not for the Joker hallucinating. Y'all should watch that again on a replay video somewhere: Scarecrow traps Batman in the lab, to be annihilated with the exploding factory. Batman is exposed to the fear toxin as he's trying to minimize the explosion (which he can't stop) and it looks like he's going to die; the player is slowly under pressure moving those canisters as Batman sacrifices himself; and as you turn around with the last canister -- boom, there's the Joker with a gun, surprise! But Scarecrow was long gone by then. Exposing Batman to the fear toxin accelerated the Joker problem. Scarecrow beats Batman at Skyship B, too -- the Joker is the only reason Batman recovers soon enough to survive being beaten by the Scarecrow! The Scarecrow beats Batman all game long, without the Joker's interference playing a part in Batman's defeat. Even the finale, where Batman loses intentionally in order to expose Bruce Wayne and kill off that part of his life (to recreate Batman), which he has been hinting at throughout the second part of the game, the Joker shows up in a Crime Alley hallucination but that doesn't keep Batman from winning: he's still imprisoned in the van being taken to the Asylum, intentionally losing for the sake of his longer-term recreation plan.

I have no problem with that. Strong but stupid has always been a common stereotype. We've seen smart Bane in TDKR anyway. Besides, there has to be a contrast among villains. Brute force, clown prince, mob boss, puzzle freak, techno freak, toxicologist, plantologist, bipolar. Who's gonna play as brute force if they make Bane smart? There's already good fighter + tactician in Ra's Al Ghul.

2:32 Freeze frame bonus: the devs teasing the plot of Arkham City! That wasn't accidental either. "Why the smiles next to certain names?" "You're the detective, you tell me!" This is never brought up again. Why? (Because it's hinting the plot to ArkCity.)

*5.* Mr. Freeze...for all the reasons you said. *4.* Penguin...he's not the most threatening or cunning villain, but he's so god-damned entertaining. Nothing else to say. *3.* Hugo Strange...for all of the reasons you said and for having one of the most ingenious plans I've ever seen. Being a pawn of Ra's Al Ghul does cost him a point, but he makes up for it with how well he manipulates the other villains. *2.* Joker...he's always a delight to watch and listen to and is--in my opinion--at his most evil in the Arkhamverse. The only things that keep him from the number one spot are the lack of a good boss battle with him and how hard the writers pushed him in Arkham Knight, the game where he was least needed (if he only appeared for the Jason Todd flashbacks, it would have been perfect). *1.* Scarecrow...in Arkham Aylum, his role was very simple; keep track of Batman and keep him busy and he gave it his all. In Arkham Underworld, he's fun to play as and it's cool how you have to prove yourself to him by setting a trap for Batman. In Arkham Knight, however, they go above and beyond with him. I love his whole persona; he's like a perfect mixture of a golden age horror movie villain and a modern Bond villain. Yes, there were some missed opportunities. I would have liked to be able to actually fight him (even if it was a hullucination of him like in Injustice 2) but like Strange, he makes up for it with what a skilled manipulator he is, nearly making Batman loose his mind, using Riddler's insecurities to influence him to go after Batman, taking control of the Arkham Knight's militia, and doing something no other Batman villain has--to my knowledge--ever done before, unmask Batman in front of Gotham.

@Funtime Fredbear And that (what he did in Asylum) was awesome! It was terrifying and unexpected as it should be. Does Scarecrow even have a boss fight in Knight? Not that I remember. Regarding what he “did” in Arkham Knight: He only was able to do all that and reveal Batman’s identity because the plot demanded him to. It was a terrible plan and makes Batman look useless without his utility belt. The writers were ending the series and got lazy. Their mindset probably was “this is the last game só Batman should be exposed and ‘die’ “ Decent idea on paper. Horrible execution.

chris boateng As a character he was weaker. His motivation was great in asylum. It was just to torture the inmates and Batman injecting them with fear toxin for his “research”. Accurate list! I would mention Henry Adams as his story as well as the audio dialogues were well thought out and had an unexpected ending with his suicide. Could you do the worst written villains? Riddler could be mentioned (there was progression in Arkham Knight with him becoming more obsessive), but two face wasn’t written well in Knight by him suddenly blaming Batman for everything. Also penguin, firefly and mad hatter had NO progression throughout the whole series.

Difficult decisions all around. Honestly, I think everyone was written well in these games, though that could be from my lack of knowledge with comics as a whole. But one I think deserves an honorable mention is Two-Face, just for his monologues in Knight. Those moments honestly brought me memories of him in The Dark Knight, which is never a bad thing. Also pretty good, and probably a controversial opinion, is the Arkham Knight himself BEFORE we knew he was Jason Todd. Honestly, without knowledge of his identity, the Knight is a really cool character to me. He knows Batman's every move, Batman doesn't know the threat he's up against, and he's trained an entire army just to kill one man. If they had just made a better decision about his actual identity and what comes of the reveal, I think the Knight would be a fan-favorite. But, that's just me.

Here’s my list: 1)Mr. Freeze. Freeze was amazing in this series, I loved his role in City, the DLC in Origins & the Side Mission DLC in Arkham Knight. I love how we got to see his character arc from only caring about his Nora to accepting her wish to not be put back in the ice container. His boss fight in AC was legendary and his boss fight in the Origins DLC was phenomenal in its own right. 2)The Riddler. The Arkham games nailed his characterization as an intelligent narcissist who is obsessed with beating Batman and unable to accept his losses. I get that a lot of people didn’t do the riddler mission but I’ve done it multiple times in AA, AC & AO. 3)Ras Al Ghul. If you listen to the tapes in all of the Arkham games you see just how much influence Ras has over them. He was influencing Quincy Sharp to open Arkham Asylum and of course with Arkham City. His boss in City is one of the best and his death in AC is one of the most brutal ones there is. His overall manipulation of Gotham and Arkham affects the entire series although it’s not evident as much if you don’t listen to the tapes. 4)Penguin. He’s mainly on here for his Arkham City appearance which was great. They really went ham in AC by giving Penguin all kinds of cool gadgets and technology. He uses the jammers, his thugs are the first you fight that have knives, body armor, TITAN, & Thermal Goggles and he also has Mr. Sickle, Tiny the Shark & Grundy. AO & AK were solid appearances. 5)Scarecrow. His missions in AA were GREAT, some of the best in the series. I loved how they hyped up his revenge in AC. He did get a little underutilized in AK but still did a lot of great things from his lines to manipulating Batman into seeing Barbara dead and of course revealing Batman’s identity to the world.

In ace chemicals it was AK kidnapping Barbara that allowed Scarecrow to get away. There're a few problems with AK. The main problem with AK is rocksteady crammed 8 or 9 story's from the comics into one game. With noticeable changes. Scarecrow's motivation was his own doing in Asylum. They made Scarecrow look like a crybaby who can't take responsibility for his own actions.
@Unknown-br1uf

Scarecrow didn't escape two times Because of Joker. The first time we encounter him Ace Chemicals, he distracts Batman by letting him know that he knows where Oracle is, giving him enough time to lock Batman in the chamber. Joker didn't manifest until After That. As for the second time on Stagg's airships, Joker may have tricked Batman, but he would have been able to take Scarecrow down if he hadn't sprayed him in the face with more toxin. Plus he already had a contingency plan for getting himself And the Cloudburst off the ship. One that worked pretty well I might add. So Joker may have acted as a nuisance throughout the game, making Batman question himself/his sanity, but he wouldn't have been unlocked to that extent If Not For Scarecrow. How u like that?

He's always been one of my favorite villains since the Animated Series but I thought the Mad Hatter was really well-imagined in the Arkham series. I thought the way he worked with (or more accurately, was manipulated by) Hugo Strange in Arkham City made his first actual appearance rather intriguing even though the actual execution of it wasn't that stellar. I thought his best appearance was in Arkham Origins, which is one of the things I did right. I like Origins for a whole for the most part but I have vivid - and I do mean VIVID - memories of the Mad Hatter showing up seemingly out of the blue. I know the game is supposed to be about how everybody kind of got started being where they are somewhat but I thought Hatter just showing up out of the blue and already KNOWING who Batman is or even how to contact him on his own technology was highly unnerving. And the design of his chapter was really out-done when it takes that hard spiral down the rabbit hole and Bats has to run through Wonderland to try and save Alice and break free. I thought that his story in Season of Infamy was a bit sad since he was kinda turned into more of a nuisance than as serious a villain he actually can be (and should be, IMO), especially considering all he has his fingers in with the other games. Personally, I think the Mad Hatter gets done dirty a lot and doesn't get the credit he deserves. Nobody really understood him like Bruce Timm and Paul Dini did and even then, there is so much more to capitalize on if they took the character in that direction. I hate the "rapey" vibe that they give the character and this is something highly evident in the Arkham series when in truth, I never preferred it because it seemed lazy. It nullified the character's potential by just saying "oh he's a molester/pedophile." I think it'd be awesome to have the Mad Hatter be even the main villain of a Batman movie if writers/directors were willing to take a chance considering how powerful he is and the crazy shit he can get Batman into. And you really wanna talk about the love for "sympathetic villains" like the villains in this video, Mad Hatter can definitely be written in that style which makes him even greater. Especially if they go the "Perchance To Dream" route where in truth, sometimes the things he does aren't necessarily that bad and are quite simple ("I just wanted to give you the life you wanted so you would stop ruining mine!"). The whole point to him is that he is mad but that doesn't make him evil like the Joker. Sometimes he does bad, sometimes he does good, and sometimes he does not a damn thing at all or something that doesn't even make sense because... well... he's mad. People keep talking about how the Joker is being overused and I can definitely understand that. The time that he is not onscreen should equally be as valued as the time he IS onscreen and there are other villains that need representation. So instead of trying their hand at Two-Face (which has been done twice, both done disappointingly even though the Dark Knight version was decent) or the Penguin or anybody else, go way out there and try my boy Jervis Tetch. He needs some love! And tea. Lots and lots of tea~...

I personally felt like Joker was in Strange’s shadow in City, whenever I play it, I always feel like that, besides the poison which sure is the majority of the story, I don’t really feel like Joker is much of a threat, I’ve always felt like Strange was more of a threat because he knew that Batman was Bruce Wayne and that would in a way, kill the Batman, more than the titan poisoning ever could, along with the fact that up until it happened, we didn’t know what Protocol 10 was, so that looming mystery of what it was and why it could ONLY start with Batman/Bruce Wayne in it really made Strange feel like the MAIN villain of the game

Certain villains of Batman pose either a physical threat (like Croc), or the threat of power they exhume (like penguin), with few crossing both (like Bane, Arkham Knight, or Ras Al Ghoul). Black Mask posed a threat in power, and not much else. I think most people were expecting a major confrontation with him at the end, even a boss fight perhaps. But the reality is, he doesn't physically pose a threat, so of course the fight wouldn't be extreme. Plus, you Do fight him in the game, it's just a boss fight in a side mission (a side-boss if you will), proving my point. Plus, I give Rocksteady credit for making him more difficult to take down in Arkham City and Knight, even if they were in DLCs. They definitely didn't waste him like with The Ventriloquist, so that's something.

Good video, love seeing your thoughts on different aspects of Arkham as normal. But, sadly I am a massive Scarecrow Stan, so I must completely disagree with anything bad you said about him. Let me give you my reasoning. You talk about the way he gets caught off guard, and only isn’t taken out by chance, that is because of the Joker hallucinations. I have to object. The first time you confront him in Ace Chemicals he literally immediately says “I’m and in control.” He knows he has Batman because he has Barbara. Next, in Stagg’s Airship, you gave the same criticism. Now, while I don’t think there’s even a problem with escaping by chance this one time, I don’t think he did. Scarecrow had his fear gas to defend himself of course (which, let’s be honest, wouldn’t mean much if Batman picked the correct Scarecrow), then we see militia coming in right behind Batman either way, then we have the fact that we see the Arkham Knight was somewhat surveying the events, and of course we have Scarecrow’s getaway. Next you talk about the Joker taking Scarecrow’s spotlight too much, but I don’t really think there’s a problem with the way his appearances (or lack thereof) were handled. Joker is literally infecting Batman’s brain, increasingly dwelling everywhere Batman looks. It’s only natural that the Joker would make more appearance than a man who’s constantly scheming, and can’t rely too much on himself for combat. To put him in more would be more situations like Ace Chemicals and Stagg’s Airship, and you had objections to those instances. Although I do agree, I would’ve liked to see him more, even over video broadcast like normal. Either way, once again I say: amazing video! Good stuff!

Although I will say, in the moment Batman has a hallucination gun to Scarecrow’s head, it is the Joker that lets Scarecrow get away, but that moment was reached only because of Batman’s Joker reaction to the toxin. A reaction Scarecrow couldn’t have predicted.

Freeze in knight was the most emotional moment in the entire series for me. In 2 games he had one of the most complete story archs in the franchise. A devoted scientist who loves his wife so much he’s willing to live in extraordinary pain for years just for the tiny chance he can save her, but by the end he believes he failed, Nora unfreezes and he is devastated, but Nora shows him that what he was doing wasn’t right and that they just need to spend the time left they have together and happy.
