Staying flat and tight makes a huge difference in fly. Experimented with reduced breathing and staying flat at Nationals Irvine, dropped my 50 fly time by 1+ seconds. Watched my swim and I know I can drop another second. Hoping to get into 27 seconds next nationals. Great tips Fares!

Great tips! About not swimming slow... Do you make a difference between gliding and swimming slow? I really feel like you said and need to use power to do a stroke but I do also can control the effort by gliding a bit (or more 😉) while I'm in the stretched position. I remember doing good 200 fly overgliding this way. Still, I always tought butterfly to be fun 25m 😂, probably because we can fully feel the style at high speed.

This video is really great. I especially appreciate your point that you cannot swim butterfly "slowly." That's such a huge misconception. If you slow down, the timing of the entire stroke suffers. I also believe that all the butterfly learning videos that employ lots of slow motion footage are a big problem. When you watch the stroke in slow motion, you lose the sense of flow and that momentum you need to actually swim the stroke correctly. If you're in the water and try to emulate the slow motion videos, your stroke will not work. You can only swim butterfly fast, with momentum and a steady and strong forward motion. I find that this stroke is all about fast and fluid full-body movement that carries from one part of the stroke into the next.

Swimming butterfly slowly IS a very good drill to me, even it might be a mistake to others. It helps me to cut each élément of the stroke, especially the recovery, and to put each élément of the system at its place. The head down, then the recovery ! As fast and low as possible. In fact, it helps me to feel all what the teacher says here, at my humble level. I also create a body memory and perhaps a good core training. (I must give it is Bad for my legs movement !) I focus on not being disqualified and being able to swim every Olympic distance. In the end, as if the teacher was always and universaly right, I cease swimming slowly by accelerating, working my heart beating and the knowing myself. Which is very well introduced by the teacher here ! But think of one thing: you might improve your level by listening his lessons ! You have to know how much.

Very helpful video- I can't figure out if stroke count is defined by kick or arm pull though (and even with the kick it's confusing what counts as one full- up or down or up and down). I think I breathe every arm pull and do 2 kicks per. Sounds hard to do two pulls in one breath. But it might help go faster

Greetings! I have just landed on this helpful tutorial. I am trying to increase my butterfly yardage as I train to swim a 5k butterfly. I have noticed that as I embark on a long butterfly swim, I slow down right from the start - knowing the distance in front of me. I fear I may be compromising my stroke? I have looked at video of myself and think I am following the rules - head down (working on improving this), not bending my knees, wide over-the-water-recovery, two-freestyle/style strokes for underwater recovery (i.e. not sweeping wide under water), and I breathe every stroke. I average about 1:50-2:00 per hundred over 4,000 yards. Nonetheless, I feel SLOW. Thoughts?
