Mixing colors seems like it should be simple, but there are a number of qualities to paint that makes it difficult and counterintuitive.
I always recommend that you start learning how to mix colors by using a limited palette. A limited palette is exactly what it sounds like-a palette made up of just a few colors.
The benefits of a limited palette are you have fewer choices to make and you will get to know those colors very well. By comparison, if you have 20 colors on your palette, it can be confusing to know which color to start with.
It also helps to arrange the colors on your palette the same way every time you paint so that you develop muscle memory. You won't have to search your palette for a color. You will just know where it is. Having to think about where a color is located when you need it can be distracting.
Sometimes people ask if I write the formulas down for a color or if I use a color mixing recipe book. I find that it's actually faster to just mix the color than it is to look it up in a book.
Once you find the color that you need in a book you still would have to mix it. So I would think this method would take twice as long as it does to mix it by eye. Of course you need an understanding of color theory in order to be able to mix colors efficiently.
You would think that if you wanted to mix a middle gray, you could mix an equal volume of white and black. The reason why this doesn't work is that each pigment has a different tinting strength. Some colors will overpower a color mixture, even if you only add a small amount.
I demonstrate this in the video where I mix equal portions of white and black. I repeat it with 3 different types of black pigments. The results vary dramatically. Carbon Black has the strongest tinting strength. Out of the 3 black paints, it produces the darkest gray.
A lot of people ask me if I ever have to start over if I mess up trying to mix a color. That doesn't happen to me very often because I have techniques that help me to test out my decisions.
For example, if I'm not sure a color is the right choice to add to my mixture, I will test it out on the side with a small quantity of paint. If it works as expected then I add more to the entire paint mixture.
However, if it produces a result that I don't like, I only have to discard a very small portion of paint and I still have my original color mixture to continue on with.
Also, this is easier to do if you start with a larger volume of color. I mix small quantities of paint in my color mixing videos because it's the fastest way to match a color.
It's more difficult to do it this way because each addition of color has a big effect upon the color. This is because I'm mixing such a small quantity of paint. I recommend that you use a palette knife and a larger amount of paint to make it easier.

🎨 PAINTS
I use mostly Golden OPEN acrylics in the color mixing videos that I post to social media because they're slow drying. This helps when I'm mixing colors outdoors.
Here's a link to the main page for them on Blick shrsl.com/3b6q9
The colors I use are: Phthalo Blue, Ultramarine Blue, Hansa Yellow Opaque, Quinacridone Magenta, Pyrrole Red, and Titanium White.
I also use Liquitex Basics in some of my color mixing demos. The colors are slightly different. Here's the main page for Liquitex Basics on Blick BLICK shrsl.com/3b6qf
