Awesome vid as always. I gotta say I do love seeing tidbits of things we train in traditional karate in these videos as well :) I only say this because sometimes traditional martial arts are criticized on not being practical vs modern styles and sometimes it is a matter of how you interpret the movements. For example, something that we learn a lot to do is to block kicks with the "opposite hand", as you explained here. Although here you mention the advantage vs the Question Mark Kick, the reasoning we tend to use as well is that you can position yourself towards your opponent's back, which is more advantageous in the end, and at least you force them to repossition/fix their stance.

6:30 the Thai fighters would disagree. From what I’ve seen they increase risk for a shot to the inner thigh, but gain the advantage of less pain to their shin due to checking the foot, rather then shin on shin, which causes tremendous pain (or even a flat out broken foot) to the opponent. I mean, wouldn’t shin on shin basically be a battle of the hardest shin? If their shin is conditioned more, they’ll go through my defense.
@jonathanplummer129

I've always thought this...I've just started Muay Thai and it seems mad to me to block a bone with your bone because it hurts so much even with light contact...I wouldn't have thought you could take too many full force kicks without it having effect
@dominus6224
Жыл бұрын
@@jonathanplummer129 shin on shin protects a bigger portion of the leg which you’re standing on, but at the same time has its risks by having you limping or flat out breaking your shin if it’s weaker than the opponent his shin. However it’s a valid way of defending, but one I would prefer not to. I prefer to defend like the Thais
@jonathanplummer129

@@dominus6224 yeah I get why they do it...but I'm with you....shin on shin definitely seems to be a battle of who had the hardest shins which in itself is a risk...that beng said on new to Muay Thai so maybe my opinion will change with experience

The idea with checking shin on shin is to damage your opponent. When you kick you generally aim to land with the bottom of your shin, and when you check you aim to block with the top of your shin or even the knee cap. The higher up on the shin the thicker the bone, so your opponent will always be hurt more than you if you check their kick properly.

on the last defense mistake: fading back with the shoulder rotating right (for those left foot foward) this is only to be used from kicks of opponents right leg, correct?
@juandenz2008

Not sure, because the idea of that movement is you can go further back to create more distance to avoid the kick. Also you have the shoulder on one side plus the hand on the other for defense.

In real life, you can destroy your opponent’s shinbones. Especially of they are an excellent roundhouse kicker. Just counter teep kick punish their shinbone. That’s why it is illegal in the cage and ring☝️Very powerful against a roundhouse kick, the most basic teep kick

Not sure if it's Varga's reason but I have heard before that flexing the foot up helps absorb the impact a bit better because the calf muscles are engaged. Feels sturdier.

I like the fade back to the side as opposed to the front also because you're better balanced as well with the back legs in better support. It's way better than leaning back because if I see someone fade back leaning backwards from my kick I'm going to fake and throw a downward punch into their stomach or shoulder ram them to knock them down.

I wonder if the fade back with a twist could be implemented on the pull and counter in boxing. 1, 2 pull with twist, it prims the 2 even more and counter with a two with extra twist force.

All great and very helpful info. For the first one specifically though, personally, I feel like most people (outside of the most elite) should just not do scooping at all simply because most people do it wrong (with flared out elbows, huge circle with outstretched hands, low shoulders, and all that) yet end up relying on it too much as their first defensive maneuver against the front kick. Simply stepping back out of the way or deflecting/parrying the kick as you angle out while still maintaining elbows close to the body seems far, far safer than scooping. Scooping should really be reserved for the high level who can utilize it with intent as a setup for a counter.

I also like to check with the foot up. Because you can instantly follow up with a oblique kick to their standing leg, or do a leg destruction (obviously not in sport, only real fighting). The foot up also allows for a secondary check with the bottom of your foot, and to come down with the heel on a target (often their foot to break it and pin them, or take off the knee cap, rake the inside of the shin etc).
