@3D - I know some people who use REW. I'm using Sonarworks Reference 4.? correction in my DAW which feeds right/left and active sub. I recently used REW to work on my sub placement and EQ. Great program! Made major improvements in suckouts below 80 Hz just by moving my sub (using a UMIK-1 mike, btw) and then used REW to auto-generate para EQ's in a MiniDSP HD and smooth out my bass response significantly. I will be using it again soon to tweak my auto-eq settings on my receiver next and get the top end just where I want it. I have 2x4 panels of 4" thick fiberglass wrapped in acoustic cloth at my primary and secondary reflection points and to be honest the room is a bit over-dampened.

@@sneikiusas Definitely try it. Make sure your receiver can accept a second sub, get a long enough cable for its position in your room (or use a wireless adapter), and away you go. I have my first sub next to my Front Right speaker, so I put the second one in a location diagonal from the first in the middle of the wall. This avoided getting some corner boom from the second sub. I threw together my movie room on a budget in 2016 and in 2020 I redid the room and corrected many things. Changed the room to movie theater red with black ceiling and black front wall. Built sound acoustic panels and placed them accordingly and then stopped using the Audyssey eq correction and downloaded the app to manage it. It is a while different world down there now. Before the redo I had white ceilings brown walls, coffee tables, end tables and the room was off center with no sound absorbing panels. So much echoing in that room and it was just loud. Now I have to turn things down because they are so clear and come at you correctly. Still a work in progress as I finish up the front wall panels and install red velvet curtains. Great videos on here.

20+ speakers is overkill and is actually providing an inferior experience. Unless your room is truly massive (1000 sq.ft+) you end up creating all kinds of phase and frequency interference with so many speakers in a “box” of a room. Next time you design a theatre try this: use the same budget for 10-11 speakers, you will have a lot less interference and you will get double the performance by spending 2X more per speaker! 11 channels would be: L/C/R [C is not even necessary for most rooms] + SL/SR + SBL/SBR + VOG(2x) + 2 subs. You could even trim that to 1 sub (that is twice the cost of 2 subs, per unit), no C, and 1 VOG. Now you have even better sound quality. Remember that a proper 2-CH Stereo system will give you a huge 3D soundstage, from 2 speakers.
@Fluterra

Auto EQ like Audyssey sucks. You are doing more harm than good - it’s never accurate. Use room correction and proper speaker and listening positions to get the best EQ, not auto EQ. UNLESS you have a Trinnov with their 3D mic. But that’s about $20K…

Great summary! I think you covered most of the mistakes in principle. Probably the worst is the in-ceiling front channel (I have seen this done in expensive installations), though in-ceiling rear speakers can be nearly as bad (a herd of horses sounding like they are flying through the air, etc. [I have heard this]). Speakers too far apart or too close together is another common one that you covered. And yes, nothing beats an SPL meter, a tape measure, and one's own ears for correct settings.

I visited a house with an interesting set up recently. It was a huge log house with an enormous hall area. I was buying a pair of Celestion bookcase speakers, and he had them placed widely apart in an area the shape of an expanding funnel into the hall. They sound WAY better than they had any right to, and much better than they did when I got them home. The thing I wanted to ask though, was that his main speakers were large three way mounted either side of the hall half way up the wall, and aiming directly at each other. They were 15 foot from the ground and 30 foot apart (did I mention it was a BIG area?) I wish I could have heard them. He did tell me he had to get a bigger amp to drive them.

Fortunately for me 1 and 2 weren't a big deal since I knew where the speakers should be placed anyway, but I absolutely agree with 3 4 and 5. My receiver's calibration did a fairly good job with 3, but I hated what it did with 4 and 5. I always set my towers to small with an xover at 80 bc that crossover sounded the best to me, and I always prefer my manual Eq, which basically acts like a tone control that I adjusted to my personal tastes. I tone down the harsh frequencies above 3 khz because they just give me ear fatigue, and I like how big the bass sounds and how small the speakers sound when I tone down the 198 hz range, which makes them complement each other, then I just boost all the low and punchy bass frequencies and the 1-2 khz range bc they just feel very cinematic!

Thank you for talking about crossover frequency and subs. I just checked my High Pass Amp and Low Pass. The electronic crossover on the High Pass was close, I had it set at 83Hz. The Low Pass was set at 265Hz for some reason. I've got them both set at 79Hz. I'm using a pair of dreaded Crown XLS-1500's. The High Pass amp is driving a pair of Klipsch RB-81 Mk II's. The other Crown is running in Low Pass Bridged mode powering an Klipsch R-115SW. I got one of their subs with a bad amp, so I drilled a hole in the back plate, and made it a passive. I wish I would have checked the impedance of the sub's driver while I had it open. Either way, the XLS-1500 produces 1050W bridged @ 8 ohms or 1550W bridged @ 4 ohms. As long as you don't over drive the pre amp outs on the receiver, these Class D amps aren't that noisy.

I run Dirac with Paradigm speakers through a NAD receiver, messed with calibration for almost a month before I just had it calibrate bass(because of the 40hz bloat in my room)! Also (side note) even if you decide to not use a calibration, at least run it for distance. I have realized distance isn't necessarily feet (physical distance is a good start), but what it really does is time delay sound so it reaches you correctly. Subs are a perfect example when they are placed by the fronts but yet it will tell you they're twice the distance or zero feet (this is not a mistake). My back channels are physically 6feet away, but sound perfect if the receiver thinks they are 13feet(dirac set them to this)!?!? Proof that everyone's rooms are different. AUDIOHOLICS FTW!

Since then, I have not been able to understand how to adjust the crossover control, which starts at 100 Hz and ends at 150 Hz. This is because the frequency response of the equipment is (+/-3dB) 35Hz ~ 120Hz. Does that mean it can only play frequencies up to 120Hz? If so, then why does the control on the back show a maximum of 150Hz? And, the last thing, in case it helps to complement your answer, my sound chain is completed by a Marantz 1711 receiver; two Polk TSi-300 towers and a Polk CS1 plant. My center channel is on the floor at the moment, but I’m aware it’s bad. Coming this week will be all new stuff: Klipsch RF-7 IIIs along with the RC-64 III center channel and their 15” sub. My 10yo Yamaha receiver is getting replaced with a Marantz SR8015. The fun part will be calibrating all that.

Streaming surround sound? Streaming does not support surround sound. 4K players with audio output being phased out. OPPO 205 4K player no longer produced price for NOS $8000. and Panasonic DP-UB9000 being discontinued. Also HDMI cable has lower power for audio output. If you buy a surround sound system, there is no way to listen ? There is no info I can find that talks about this? Could I please get some comments about this.

i set up my front towers as full range (Jamo C97 they can go down to like 36, with nice peak at 40Hz), and my woofer (SVS PB1000) at 80Hz cross over. I did that to have more filling with my towers, even as my woofer covers that range. That for both movies and music. Why setting the towers that "low" is bad, when they can provide some extra bass to make the sound more full.

Hey, when it comes to the subwoofer on my 5.1 you are correct, because when it comes to movies its great but with music, I'm always saying where’s the BASS? It’s hardly ever there. New carpet being installed this week and I just got a new Yamaha RX A2A so will use your recommendations once everything is done. Thank you!

I need some assistance. I have cable box and a Roku, should both connect through the receiver first. But, when we want to just watch news or a TV show without going through all of our speakers how would we make this connection? We’d just like to use the TV’s speakers for news programs and regular TV shows. And is it possible to set up the receiver so that when we turn on the Roku box it “triggers” the receiver to come on automatically? Our receiver is a Marantz SR5010. Thx

Made a rookie mistake. I crimped speaker wires instead of running full length wires and 1 came loose and blew out my Velodyne sub shutoff cap. And blew the sub on my right LSI25 Polk Audio tower speaker. I made a quick fix and didn’t have a full length. And had my wires in the terminals too long.

Please answer this question. I have a set up to where I'm running a long throw projector connected to a PS4 behind me to optimize screen size. I bought a 5.1 vizio set up(sound bar 2 surrounds and sub). Due to my projector/ps4 set up I have to have the sound bar behind me. I've set everything up correct RC with RSurr. Etc. BUT the sound is switched. On screen people look one way sound comes from the other side in my seated position. How can I change up the sound? Or am I stuck with this opposite perspective?

So easy to setup a TV vs the sound system... and the first part is the most important and expensive... the room. Time tells all and that requires the proper space to tell the truth and get the sound right. Even more important with 3D audio. 2:33 LOL... now you know why people still buy DVDs to play on their 4K TVs. As soon as people stop buying DVD's we will see Blu-ray sold at DVD prices as it should be at this point in time seeing as tube TV's are no longer made. We are affected by the buying choices of the public at large even if a small percentage creating a small crack into the Gold mine. Our Walmart sells mostly DVD and is a reflection of the towns overall mentality.

I think that I will have to go into my receiver's settings and set the front speakers to small after watching this. I have noticed that 2 channel audio does sound weak from my system. Also going to try to spread out my front left and right channel speakers. I will have to watch your video on setting delays though, because that sounds complicated! One thing that might actually be good about my older early 2000's receiver is that it doesn't have any of that fancy auto calibration stuff, so it's basically forcing me to manually set all those things like EQ and delays. Thank you for the great tips in this video! I have owned a surround sound system for a few years now, but I have not really gotten into calibrating everything properly. It's nice to find ways to boost performance of my aging system for free!

The ears are delicate and precious to most people. I think what Americans are looking for is NOT to over do it. But get a nice comfortable sound out of music equipment that also produces music realistically at a good price. Most people only have a small 15ft x 15ft family room to work with. So they don’t need to over do it. Yet they want a good sounding system that can provide for them hours of listening enjoyment with-out giving them a head ache or damaging the ears. Nerves are the sensors in our human bodies and a head ache is cause from pain. Pain is NOT good but caused by irritation or damage.

Ok so I get that if I buy a soundbar I'm a big fuckin idiot or whatever cus reasons, but if my budget is $700, and the room I'm working with is aytpical (corner TV, lots of off center seating, guests seated all around the room rather than coralled into one spot I can control, vaulted roof, half of the room is the kitchen, large glass door taking up the wall to the right of the TV, little room for speakers in general), is trying to put together a budget 3.1 set-up from scratch even worth it? I'm fairly confident I have no choice but to screw something up--for example the placement is just going to be wrong. I don't have the room to put each speaker in the "right" place, and also, I'm not sure that's even possible to begin with, given that there are so many different places to sit in this room, each with a different distance to the tv. I'm more interested in the whole room getting roughly the same, balanced sound, even if it's not great, than I am in *one special spot* getting great sound while being anywhere else makes things unlistenable.

Love your audio knowledge, I recently tested 3 different AVRs and used their microphone calibrations, and you are spot on, you have to tweak the calibration from distance, size, htz and levels.. what was amazing the lower end amph had great home theater sound but lacked in HiFi quality.

I have the Denon 3700h, and in the bass, I have it set to LFE, and bass set at 120hz. Should that 120hz change? Also, in the crossover, the subs are set at 120hz as well as on the sub itself.

In confused. There is so much talk about phase accuracy but it cannot be that important. If a singer moves towards or away from a microphone the phase changes too, does it not? Assuming the multi way drivers in your loudspeaker are in phase, and the left and right channels are also in phase must be the most you need be concerned about. So what if the tweeter signal arrives 1°out of phase than the midrange driver? Unless both are putting out equal Loudness at the same X frequency (which they can't and won't) it's all moot. And then room reflections mess that up even more! Perhaps a detailed technical video one this is due to explain why this is supposedly so critical? Thanks!

Relying on auto eq is a huge one. Even relying completely on rew is not a great idea. Too many people not relying on their ears. It takes a couple of years and allot of listening to get and understand what the graphs are actually telling you. The graphs should be a guide only. Your ears should be the deciding factor. And of course, taste...

Denon's Audyssey is the worst when it comes to setting up your speakers, especially if you'll be listening to music, not playing movies only. The corrections it makes for the delays plus the Denon's optimisations and distribution of the sound makes it unbearable. I hate my Denon AVR for that. Sony rules when it comes to music playing and movie watching from the same receiver, at least in my opinion.

Is there a good video that explains how to read the room corrections (the green squiggly line vs red squiggly line)? I just accept what the calibration software says and go to the next step. Is there more info a layman can extrapolate from the room corrections to then manually adjust afterwards? Or just leave it if I'm a novice?

hey there stupid question, i know you said that we should not block the direct sound path from speakers to listening area. Assume this does not include subs? I'm trying to decide where to place my 2 subs, either in front or opposing corners. Problem with opposing corners is I have stairs in my living room and at least one of the subs would be obstructed by my stairs. I wonder if that would effect the sound coming from my sub.

At least you can repair most speakers by replacing them, the amps and crossovers. Fast way to tell if your speakers or the crossover is bad. Use a 9v battery on the speaker terminals. If they pop or scratch or move in and out the speakers are usually good. If not, try replacing them 1st. The crossover will need a multi tester. Test it on the ohms setting. 8 ohms can read 5 or 6 on the meter. Test the back terminals 1st on ohms to see if it reads close to your speaker rating. Test all the connections with the wires and caps. If you get a read your crossover is usually good.

My front speaker is on the floor. I have zero other place to put it.. I know where ideally it should be, but since I am using a STP and the bottom of my screen is 18” from the floor, if I tried to put my center channel on a stand for in the center, it would block the projector or block. The screen to the floor is the only place to put it.. In walls were not an option. am.
