Soaking would only cause RI if the water temps were too cold and then it was placed into a Improper enclosure that wasn't warm enough. Many keep Russians in extremely humid areas where temps are constantly warm and they soak themselves daily without threat of RI. In my experience RI is always due to substandard housing.

One of my tortoises is obsessed with the tortoise diet pellets and will often refuse to eat anything else for nearly a week after having them. I know it's not the worst thing for them to be addicted to as they are good for them, but I only really have them as a backup for when I can't get a good variety of food for them (I don't have a garden so I can't always get hold of the natural foods they eat, especially since the pandemic started) and it's really hard to get her to eat anything else just from giving her them once in a while to make sure she's definitely getting the nutrients she needs. They can be very stubborn when it comes to food.

I have had my tortoise for 29 years now - He is 44 years old😊 At first there wasn’t internet and in the books it was not always correct information. Could you tell me about your substrate, because I’ve tried a lot of things and there comes bugs and different kind of animals in it even if I clean of it of pee and poo. What do you do, to keep these away? And underneath it what have you put there? About bath, I only do it once in a while, if I can see he can’t push his poo out, or if he has a lot of pee on him. As you said it’s not normal for them in the wild. I put him in the bath room sink he loves water smoothly running over him, he loves that and then afterwards little water he can sit in. They must only be in there max 15-20 min. because otherwise they can get worm I have read. I only tooth brush his behind quickly, and if you notice your tortoise doesn’t seem to like the tooth brush, and mine doesn’t either, so I only do it shortly on his behind to remove poo etc. on his behind. About food it has been hard for me to get him to eat other things, because at first I didn’t know about all of these things and he got a lot he shouldn’t have. Earlier on I went about two weeks, (they can live without food about three weeks), where he didn’t eat the other things, and he “won” but now I put it on top on his food and hope he gets more used to it, but he is sneaky and try his best to avoid it, if it’s possible😊

I have a plant in my garden, Waldsteinia, called guldjordbær (golden strawberries in Danish). The berries er small, red (not golden, that is the flowers) an not sweet at all. But my tortoises don't seem to realise that, they love them as a treat. Certain flowers with nicew colours are also popular: Aquilegia, tropaeolum and roses do not create hedonistic tortoises - but they like them. If I serve roses to my two females I have to respect the pecking order or risk a lot of trouble.

When it comes to fruits occasional bits of apple is okay. It’s actually one of the few fruits that’s not too bad to give them. Fruits like strawberries are high in (a certain mineral I forget) but anyway if I remember correctly that can lead to things one of which is pyramiding. Fruit isn’t completely bad for them though. Treat fruits like they’re an extremely over the top sugary treat that tastes amazing but is something you really shouldn’t have. All I’m saying is be very sparing with fruits and always look up whether a certain food is harmful to your tortoise. Actually that goes for ALL animals not just tortoises. Just because you can eat it does not mean your pet can.
@amypetersen1668
6 ай бұрын
yeah they really can't have any fruit. The problem is the sugar- their digestion is too slow and the sugar ferments and gives them painful stomach cramps. You don't know since they can't tell you! Apples have too much sugar. If you really want to treat them, flowers are a love of theirs and maybe a little grated carrot. But no fruit at all is best.
