Hyaluronic acid has been one of the greatest things I've ever used for my skin, which is very dry. I never thought it was penetrating my skin, I know very few things do that. But it keeps the surface of my skin feeling hydrated and comfortable. I used to have big problems with flakiness and foundation sticking to all the flakes and looking terrible. But with a good HA moisturizer underneath, that barely happens anymore. And if it's causing extra bacteria, well, I haven't noticed a negative difference - no redness, no pimples, etc. So if it works for you, I don't think it's a bad thing.

Same here. Very dry skin, and I love HA! The effects don't last for eternity, but it makes life nicer. The only thing that did make a long time difference for less dryness and less wrinkles, was bone broth. Old fashioned, homemade bone broth. And as I was researching why that is, there are aminoacids in bone broth with whom the body makes collagen and also HA with. And from the inside, that stuff really does get into your skin

Love you Jen! I’m mostly a lurker. Feelin spicy today, so commenting. Long time skincare junkie, 2+ years as a Skincare Specialist at sephora and I’m about a month away from having my Cosmo license under my belt (including several hundred hours practicing esthetics) I have tried pretty much every chemical exfoliant you can find at the good ol Sephoria. My current regimen is a once a week Drunk Elephant Babyfacial and I do use a few lighter ones throughout the week, I use my Ole Henriksen toner probably 2-3 times a week, and Origins night-a-mins occasionally. For a physical exfoliant i bounce between my Dermalogica microfoliant and the Dior Time To Glow powder exfoliator. I usually HATE dior products for their fragrance alone, but this powder dissolved with water, into a super lightweight foam instantly, you do not feel ANY granules, it uses sugar crystals and lotus seed, and it makes your skin look SO healthy and glowy. Seriously, ask for a sample next time you’re in a Sephora, it is high key the most underrated product of all time. I got a bottle in gratis months ago and just had never cracked it open because quite frankly Dior skincare bores me. May seem excessive but I’m to a point where I know my skin through and through, i also PACK on moisture in between and basically just do everything as needed. I think the Dr. Dennis Gross peel pads are also a flawless method that delivers the perfect amount of product in an easy to understand, consumer friendly way, and those lil babies always make my skin feel like butter when I’m using them. That Hyaluronic acid train gets people every time,I have had SO many clients return the B-Hydra, telling me that it dried their face out, when they’re trying to use a serum...as a moisturizer. Honestly there’s better options much cheaper (I love introducing the Inkey Lists items) however knowing so many people who seem to have issues, that article isn’t too surprising. I’ve personally had nothing but positive experiences, but there are so many other options than a water based hydrator/humectant, it’s not a miracle product ingredient, but boy do brands love havin it on their label. I’ve been using the Hadolabo Premium off amazon for several months now and it’s one of my all time favorites. Another super overlooked product is just good ol rosehip oil, it’s super rich in tretinoin/all-trans retinoic acid, a vitamin A acid that retinol converts to. Yielding results -similar- to retinol without that weird adjustment phase/dealing with the dryness that comes along with retinol. Mad love to you Jen 💖

Hyaluronic acid is wonderful WHEN USED CORRECTLY! If you live in a dry desert climate you absolutely have to put a moisturizer over your hyaluronic acid serum. Also if you have your heater running in your house you really should use a humidifier in your bedroom while you sleep. Need to keep the air as moist as possible. I would be willing to bet money that the people not having good results live in dry places and/or are not putting a proper moisturizer on their skin after applying.

Jen, Thanks for the video - all valid points. Regarding hyaluronic acid (HA), it is now in so many products it's hard to avoid. It really is aggravating when an ingredient becomes 'the next big thing'. The market is flooded with the ingredient du jour, and added to everything (okay, I'm exaggerating, but you know what I mean), HA has been added to cleansers, toners, moisturizers, foundations, and the list goes on and on. A few weeks ago I started hearing that applying HA topically may not be that good for our skin. I started to research it online and I obtained conflicting information; it became so confusing that I stopped reading about it and just continue to use the skincare I have and hope for the best. The dermatologists, chemists, aestheticians, and skincare specialists on youtube seem to have different opinions as well. I haven't noticed any negative effects with the products I am using so I guess I'll have to wait and see what happens. Please keep us updated on the information you obtain; maybe someday we'll know the truth. Take care, Ginny 😘😘😘

Finally someone who agrees makeup wipes are soooo bad.. when i see these young girls and ladies pulling at the skin when you should be doing the opposite...wash your face first then use the micellar waters with a soft cotton wipe..just common sense..less scrubbing when most of it came off with a regular cleanser with water..it pains me to watch these influential girls here using them before you actually wash your face first..these wipes should only be used to pick up what was left behind.
@katherinedavidson2029
4 жыл бұрын
I disagree with that order. You should cleanse AFTER using micellar water - or an oil cleanser/cleansing balm, etc. Those products are designed to break down your makeup, making your face wash not have to work as hard, but they leave behind product and if you don't cleanse it off it is leaving residue behind. That includes makeup wipes also (which I agree with Jen about not using at all and instead I use the makeup eraser because 1) it's more gentle on the skin and 2) having washable cleansing tools that can be reused have great environmental benefits as well). All of those kind of products leave product and residue behind that you do not want staying on your skin all night, and preventing your other skincare products (toner, serum, moisturizer, etc) for being as effective since there's still cleansing products on the skin. So if you wash your face first, then use a cotton pad and micellar water to "get what was left behind" you will still have the residue from the micellar water left on your face. Look up the double cleanse method for a better explanation if I'm not explaining it well :) I agree that it pains me seeing anyone tugging and pulling on their skin though! No matter what you use or do, we should always be as gentle as possible, especially when cleaning off eye makeup and touching that sensitive area. Some people are so rough with their skin which can lead to premature aging.

That’s what I thought too. I did some more research, but it was a lot of conflicting information. However, it seems that HA needs applied on a wet face or under heavy moisturizer/oils. It draws water, but if the air is dry (winter or location), it draws from your skin and not the environment. No product explains that in the directions for use though. And I was using a moisturizer with HA, so it really didn’t make sense. I stopped using it a couple weeks ago to get rid of the flaky skin, and haven’t tried it again yet.

I stopped for a couple months when I got a great makeup remover balm in my Play! box from Fharmacy and I fell in love with it. Seeing this video reminded me that I needed to order more, so I did. I did noticed the balm is gentler on my lashes. I didn't seem like using wipes were rough on them but after whiching to the balm I noticed a big difference in losing less lashes. Very informative video! I just want to expand on AHA products. Glycolic Acid is one of the more harsh AHA. It's because the molecules are really small and they really penetrate the skin. If you have sensitive skin, try Mandelic Acid. The Ordinary has a great one, 10% Mandelic Acid which I love. Feels a bit oily, but quickly sinks into the skin. The AHA between Glycolic and Mandelic is Lactic Acid. Again, The Ordinary has both 5% and 10% Lactic acid available. I have very sensitive skin. Started out with Mandelic Acid and was able to move on to Lactic Acid, both 5% and 10% depending on my needs. My skin will never be able to tolerate Glycolic Acid which I fine. I'm able to use a very low dose Retin A, the ultimate acid, but it took years of skin prep and I still have to avoid my cheek area,(mild roseacea). Just don't go for the strongest strength until you've figured out where you are. If anyone one wants to know more about how to acclimate to stronger products just ask! :-)

Caroline Hirons said in a video once that HA is an acid, so if your skin barrier is disrupted it can burn (for her it was a bad reaction to a product, but it could also be eczema or rosacea, etc.). That was also my experience when I was using adapalene every day. Caroline also said that the cheaper (bigger molecule) HA was burning her skin less, and she guessed it was because it wasn't penetrating as deeply. And that was also my experience when my skin was really irritated. But that doesn't mean avoid small molecule HA, just maybe if your skin is irritated. Also, the cheaper HA serums (I'm thinking of the Ordinary and the Trader Joe's versions) I find give me a kinda chubby pore look. Like they plump up my skin, but not in a cute way, and my pores end up looking bigger. I don't avoid HA, but I don't use a straight up HA serum anymore. It's in some of the products I use. But I find glycerin to be a much nicer hydrating product (I learned that from labmuffinbeautyscience). But of course, disclaimer, this is all hearsay I've heard from other people, plus my own experience, so not a very credible source of information. I messed up my skin big deal because I was using the wrong products and to make it worse I was overusing them. I have a condition that it's called papulopustular rosacea. It looks like acne but it's not. So I was using a lot products that are good for acne prone skin, like exfoliators like glicolic acid or salycilc acid. But exfoliate is last thing you want to do in my situation because the skin is too sensitive to handle it. They made things really bad, I had more and more lesions and my skin was very textured, flaky, and it felt thick so I felt I needed to exfoliate more. It was a vicious circle. Finally I did what I should have done long ago and I visited a dermathologist. And it's when I was properly diagnosed and I learnt what I should do to take care of my skin and what I don't. A lot of damage was already done and some of it is irreversible. So my advice is that the moment you feel there's something wrong with your skin, go to the doctor and don't stack product over product like I did.

I have this too. Once I switched to products for sensitive skin...very gentle, no fragrance, soothing ingredients, nothing irritating, and got super religious about sunblock, my skin improved 1000%. I use lots of Korean skincare and sunscreen because it is so gentle.

I just watched a video by Dr. Dray (who is a dermatologist) and she said it is good to put skincare on your skin while it's damp, after cleansing. But she said do NOT moisten the face just to apply moisturizer. She didn't say why, but she said just splashing water on your face for the sake of moisturizing is not good. I also received a product in one of my Fab Fit Fun boxes that had pumice in it and it's SO abrasive. I did a little digging and pumice is actually glass!!! I didn't know that 😕 Edit: my skin HATES hyaluronic acid. I've tried it for almost a year. On dry skin. On damp skin. On wet skin. With moisturizer on top to seal it in. Just on it's own. And it ALWAYS pulls the moisturize out of my skin instead of the other way around 😭 I can use products with hyaluronic acid in it but just pure hyaluronic acid ruins my skin 😕 Another edit: sorry I forgot to mention........ Most skincare doesn't/can't penetrate through the stratum corneum (a thick waxy, water-repellent shield of fatty acids, sebum, and ceramides which seal the skin's natural moisture in and keeps external moisture out). Most oil's molecules are too large to penetrate/absorb past the skin's surface, although they do feel nice. Waxes and balms have an even slimmer chance of breaking through the skin's barrier. Silicones have no hope of absorption at all. They just stay on top and coat the skin. The whole point of skincare is to nourish the skin barrier. Just don't expect your skincare and especially your EXTREMELY expensive skincare to "sink into" your skin. Because it doesn't. Well, it does a little bit. But not deep enough because of the thick fatty/waxy barrier.

I have acne-prone combination skin, with dry patches around my mouth and sometimes dry cheeks. I bought a night serum with 5% glycolic acid. Boy did I not expect that I would get rid of most of my pimples and even some scarring. But I found that only daily usage works for me, I cleanse my face at night, put on the serum and my moisturizer after that. And in the morning I have radiant skin without any dryness. And now I only get some occasional small pimples, not the large ones I used to get. My serum also has hyaluronic acid and was actually marketed as anti-ageing and detoxifying.

I love you, Jen ❤️ But you shouldn't be using chemical exfoliants in the morning. Chemical exfoliants increase your skin's UV sensitivity, so you can potentially get a sun burn even with sunblock. Apply chemical exfoliators at night so it has time to work, and let your morning wash/cleanse remove the dead cells and impurities.

I use PHA instead of typical AHA because the molecules are bigger so they don’t penetrate as quickly or deeply which is better for people with more sensitive skin. I highly recommend if you have reactive skin or starting to use chemical exfoliants to get PHA products bc it won’t be too much on your skin.

If you need a BHA exfoliator, the Paula's Choice 2% BHA liquid Exfoliant is phenomenal. Non-drying at all. Even on my normal-dry skin. I get a lot of blackheads on my nose, and this keeps them under control. They come up less often.

Oh when you mentioned BHA's my skin actually shuttered lol Like Jen said and it's true if your using something and your skin doesn't like it you will know. Well I know at least . I have some sensitive skin that likes to get really DRY, and the largest organ on my body likes to scream when it's not happy. Like skin care for me isn't just what goes on my face. I have some serious alergy issues and even when it comes to the body wash/soaps I use I really have to watch what I use. The one darn thing I was scared to even try on my skin was coconut oil/coconut based products (because I've heard people have issues) and that's the 1 think my skin likes. So yeah my point 10 hours later... When you find something that works use it. Just do your research 😊

Sometimes more is more. 10 + skincare routines is a calming and enjoyable ritual for me. My skin type is very dry, eczema prone, sensitive and mature. My issus are fine lines, loss of firmness, redness and inflammation. Because I have eczema and heat with wood, dryness and skin barrier damage are my main concerns. I finally won my battle with eczema this winter by layering skin barrier and hydrating toners and essences. I also use a Cicaplast gel or a heavy moisturizer like CeraVe, mixed with an oil as a night mask. My actives are chemical exfoliator (3x/week), vitamin C, Retinol, Vitamin E and Resveratrol. I also use an enzyme serum on the days I don't use my AHA. I also use a retinol eye cream, and another that provides extra hydration. I have lip lines so I use 2 treatments for that, as well as a lip mask. I use a neck cream and moisturizer, too. And of course, SPF, every day, year round. When you add that up, plus cleansing, it comes to a whopping 15+ steps at night and 12 for the day. However, before my skin started showing signs of aging and eczema was rare, I used just 4 items, cleanser, serum, eye cream and a moisturizing SPF.

Jen oh my god I love you!!!! Basically everything you have said in this video is shit I have been trying to tell people for YEARS!!!! I worked in skin care and cosmetics for nearly a decade and have been trying to tell people these things. Personal additions to what you've said - AHA are also absolutely wonderful for the reduction in scarring from past acne or skin conditions. An alpha hydroxy acid is a compound that can break down the "glue" holding together damaged cells on lower levels of the dermis and help skin look brighter, more even toned and healthier. They're also a wonderful product to use if you're suffering from Keratosis Polaris (mini red raised bumps usually on the backs of arms and thighs). Make-up wipes are the focking devil for you skins current health, future appearance and the environment. Also, THEY DON'T CLEANSE YOUR FACE AT ALL. There is NOTHING beneficial in a make-up wipes. Ban those bitches. My favourite physical exfoliation products at the moment are the own brand from Superdrug (UK drugstore). They have a beautiful oatmeal exfoliating face wash that is so gentle and smells amazing! ❤️❤️

I had to remove hyaluronic acid from my skincare all together! I started getting a lot of redness (more than the amount I have) and actual inflammation of the face and extreme dehydration. Once I noticed how much my skin changed I made an appointment with my dermatologist and he was so thorough and we went over all my skincare products and after research and his process it was concluded that HA was not good for me. I know it’s great for other people just not me

great video! my skin is very sensitive & acne prone. combo-dry but lately i've been oily on the forehead, nose and temples. i use peter thomas roth anti aging cleanser as a chemical exfoliant. i've tried many other but they do not work well with my skin (at least on my face). i can only use it once a week and let it sit on my skin for 1-2 minutes while very gently massaging it in with my finger tips. if i leave it on longer, my skin feels weird and tends to break out. i focus it on my chin and temple area the most because i have sebaceous filaments and it helps with that. for daily use, i use soy fresh cleanser as it seems to work best for me. in regards to hyaluronic acid..thanks for the info! i have a serum sitting on my desk that didn't work amazing for my face. right now my hands are disgustingly dry from the weather and i have been using vaseline or shea butter with the hyaluronic acid on my hands. i wonder if this is benefitting long term or not.. my hands feel so much softer and hydrated once i apply it but who knows!

HA dries me out so bad if I am not super-duper careful. I used an HA serum and woke up with the driest most wrinkly dehydrated skin of my life. I can get away with it if I use a serum with a heavier moisturizer layered over top AND it is not winter. There has to be humidity in the air for me to even consider using it. For the most part I have stopped using it just because it has become more trouble than it was worth.

I am really enjoying all your information and the way you present it. As for AHA an BHA, I can not tolerate any amount. My skin is too dry and fragile. I have been using a PHA every week or every two weeks and the peeling and redness are tolerable. I have only been using it for about 2 months now. I am not sure if I will continue when my current bottle is gone. When you have to choose between 2 bad days of dry peely skin after using it or just a normal fairly good skin day, it makes me want to toss the bottle or at least defer using it very often :)

I only chemically exfoliate now bc I think a physical like the cleansing brush was too harsh for my skin. I’ve always double cleansed at night, but now in the morning, I just swipe some micellar water and my skin has INSTANTLY improved! I was guilty of doing way too much. Hi Jen, I would love a video about the different kinds of HA’s that are available in skincare such as Hydrolyzed HA or maybe sodium acetylated hyaluronate. I love that you’re a skincare enthusiast and feel that you give some good information. Maybe you researched them and just didn’t mention it. Also, it would be great if you can look into why some AHA’s are more active than BHA’s on different types of skin, I.e. tingling, itching, erythema...BTW, I am a licensed medical aesthetician.

Okay, so I have different skin than Jen. I have oily skin prone to cystic acne. The acne isn't white heads or black heads it's under the top layer of skin as a pocket of swelling and water. I use a physical exfoliator, walnut shell powder, it feels like sand. If my job is low sweat and low grease, like student and white collar then I use it 2 times a week. Currently, my job has motor oil in the air and I sweat like a cheater in church so I use it everyday. I've noticed more fine lines but I'm also 37 so it could just be time. But it prevents the deep pockets of inflammation from happening. My skin hates BHAs and I'd never use both physical and chemical. My routine, if anyone is interested in trying something just to see if it works better. I do this in the tub and wouldn't recommend it with a wet wash cloth. Gentle gel cleanser first--no exfoliation of any sort or fancy skincare either, Queen Helene's Oat and Honey Scrub (2 times a week for those with cushy jobs), then the dollar store band of Noxema. Use cleanser and deep cleanser everyday and the exfoliator at the beginning and middle of the week. I use the generic deep cleanser because it contains more water than the actual name brand and is a little less harsh. It contains menthol, so if you are sensitive then watch out, I like opening up my breathing as I let it sit for a couple of minutes. I don't recommend my routine for Jen and I know dry skin needs the complete opposite of what I do, but my routines removes the dirt, opens the pores and reduces inflammation and cystic acne occurrences for oily, cystic acne prone skin. I added a clay mask for redness and black heads once a week it's helped. I also do a vitamin C oil plus moisterizer two days a week before I go to sleep to help with redness, scarring, and uneven skin tone. I work third so I don't have to worry about sun exposure on a regular basis, but vitamin C will make you more susceptible to sun damage. I've had cystic acne since I was 19, mine is allergy related--as soon as I stopped my shots clear skin to boom. I'm fat and live in the South, oily skin is a way of life here. I've tried almost everything including going to a dermatologist. This routine worked for me and another woman suffering from the same issue. Its dollar store/Sally products, the whole thing minus the vitamin C oil is under 25 bucks.
