Great selection of mechanical prints Angus. The gear cube has been a favourite with visiors, its eye catching on the shelf and they grab it and soon after exclaim "no way!" or "holy sh*t!" when it moves. Add a small amount of Super Lube or dry PTFE lube when you assemble, spining parts to ensure lube spreads and print imperfections get smoothed. Apart from being just cool these designs showcase how possible it is to take constant rotation and apply it in a different direction or different way. Good for sparking ideas and for designing practical builds like tracking mounts for photography, astronomy, solar projects for starters.

I'm not a 3D maker, but I'm intrigued at all the fascinating possibilities of developing micrometric (with details under 1mm) scale components of multiple materials simultaneously. I'm fairly sure it's possible to manually swap filaments during a build, but I'm wondering when the technology would allow for multiple nozzles to work in tandem (accelerating construction & producing almost unimaginably complex mechanical devices). Just consider having one material (eg: hard wax) for the support structures & another for the component... How 'bout making complex gearing structures/patterns, like a pocketwatch? Or even integrating a robotic arm to install microelectronics into a 3D printed circuit?
@normoloid

Gear cube has similar mechanism as the box in hellraiser.. made me right away think how far you could copy it with printing, they certainly look stunning as non-working replica, but printed and painted parts could be even cooler because of being able to actually twist the thing.

I think another great add-on to this list is the NASA wrench that was sent up to the ISS for their 3D printer. It's a fully functional, ratcheting wrench that prints in one go - nothing to assemble - and it's actually really strong. It can only tighten, but I would assume that making a mirror of it in the slicer will make it loosen. nasa3d.arc.nasa.gov/detail/wrench-mis

Interesting design!!!....I suppose if the socket shaft protruded from the opposite side, the wrench could physically be flipped to reverse direction!!!...but if printed flat in place would require support. UNLESS the shaft area was void, shaft printed separately & inserted after wrench & shaft were complete. Just an observation!😁👍🏻

Umm. They scale to a 1 to 1 ratio. yes the force is higher ifyou drive it starting from the gear meshing from the small end but there isn't any sort of "gearability" (if that makes sense) to increase its lift capacity. Plus it would have to be metal if its going to be a sturdy, long lasting robot.
