Wait what? The only hostiles here are the far-right extremists leading Catalonia into an internal civil war. Those populists (mostly the old rural and traditional aristocratic families) only want government positions to gain more and more power, and they find it pretty easy painting Spain as the enemy, focusing on the differences instead of what unites them. Re-writing history, falsifying information and dealing with regimes like Putins Russia (they even agreed to have 10.000 Russian troops in Catalonia to “help” them) or xenophobic like the far right in Belgium is the day to day for them. I truly enjoy Simon channels but on the Catalonian topic they really need a good deep dive into how perverse, anti-European and backwards the Catalonia independence movement is.

Those who might think "west Papua" might gain its independence before 2030, all i can said its an absolute BS. Its part of Indonesia's core provinces and letting it go would ultimately unleash a big chain reactions that would certainly put everyone on Indonesia (westerners and Indonesians alike) on a direct blast path. Sure enough it can satisfy the western lusts for crack apart the sole giant in SEA and adding obstacle for the country from focusing on achieving its goals of spreading the developments evenly to the farthers part or the country but the incoming aftermath would not be pleasant at all. Mind you, when Indonesia lose East Timor, it also solidify the avenue to hardline islamists to launch terror attacks in the country with the most infamous ones was the bomb attack in Bali. Not only because losing East Timor cause the security forces must be deployed to the westernmost part of the country that were also had a long history of a massive separatist unrest, its also push the security becomes very thin elsewhere to monitor the security, make the hardline islamist had a time of their life tried to deligitmate Indonesian govt while at the same time launching terror attacks here and there by quoting that event as the sign of how the country has become weak due to "western interferences". With so much stakes were on hand and a grim reality that one "small" event in international standards would create a whirlwind of chaos for at least a decade, no one on the sanest mindset would allow the bigger part and the core part of the Indonesia such as Papua breaks away if it would same like opening a bigger pandora box that would not only permanently affecting the relationship with western countries (and making the country drifting further to China's embrace) but also unleash the demons of chaos that may be put everyone in the country be it westerners or native Indonesians on the unspeakable size of grave danger at the uncharted territories.

It is a country and nation but locked into a United Kingdom. Cornwall is the better example. It was a nation but was absorbed (much later than many people realise) into England and is now a county. There are those who seek nationhood for it and whilst similar to Scotland it is distinctly different. Sat inbetween is Wales. Wales was considered for years an area of England, completely absorbed after being conquered but it has been slowly trying to reexert itself as a nation. Even now though after gaining a degree of recognition of this it is still very much synchronized with England in terms of laws etc. It is not uncommon to see on many policies or government sites "England and Wales" referred to as one unit. The Welsh nation is slowly reestablishing itself but whilst far more extricated from England than Cornwall is, it still has a long way to go before establishing the same state as Scotland.

Even if West Papua gained independence, the post-independent country would be very chaotic as vast majority of West Papuans would oppose independence. Because they don't feel represented by the separatist group who burned down the schools, churches and health facilities that built by Indonesian government, and kidnapped those native Papuans who chose to be loyal to Indonesia. Those who kidnapped oftenly killed or beaten up and their families being threatened until they want to join and swear allegiance to the separatist group. And those who got their human rights abused are actually the sepratist militias, not the ordinary civilians. So, the human rights abuser here is not Indonesia; it's the separatist terrorists. Western media and journalists are not allowed to enter West Papua, not because Indonesia is trying to hide its sins in West Papua, but because their presence would destabilize the region even more. We know the US has the largest gold mine in West Papua, and also Indonesia doesn't allow Western countries to build military bases in West Papua. The leader of West Papuan separatist group also resides in the UK. So we know whose interest is it in West Papua, right? Students in West Papua even get special scholarships from the central government to study in major cities across the country and also abroad. Provinces in West Papua even get special budget from the central government annually. And they also allowed to have their own parliaments that filled with native people only or have a very small number of seats for non-native Papuans. Meanwhile, the separatist group doesn't even have a clear roadmap for their future development plans. They can't even unite the tribes properly. They only want to have power by all means, even if it requires them to be Western puppet state. That's why they want to separate because they know they won't be qualified for any power in the government. So if people say West Papua is being left out in Indonesia, the answer is no. Those provinces in West Papua got the most special treatment within the country that other provinces don't get.

Simon, you forgot Scotland. A series of lies from Westminster, including loss of pensions was enough to scare pensioners into voting against independence in 2014 and that tipped the vote in favour of staying in the UK. Since then we've had Brexit (vote No to stay in the EU) shine a light on the the duplicity of Westminster. Not forgetting that we where also told the oil was running out and now Westminster has announced there is at least 40 years left in the various Scottish fields. Tory MP Michael Gove (or Pob as I like to call him), a self depreciating Scot, who liked to slag of his country in the comedy circuit before pursuing politics, commissioned a secret poll on independence and has refused to reveal the results. Rumors suggest that the reason for this is that Yes was put at 70%. Makes you wonder why they won't allow another referendum, eh?

Yeah but it wouldn't belong here. Scotland never ceased to be a distinct country and nation within a United Kingdom, unlike the situation Wales had. Whilst both are viewed as nations now it has always been the case for Alba. This list is about new countries. And not because we don’t know about Not because we don’t know about Ireland/ Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales and England. They’re just culturally and politically distinct across the pond. So much so that differentiating between each isle is easier than Austria/Germany, the Nordic countries, or, perhaps controversially right now, Ukraine and Russia. Everything else Scotland lacked in a political sphere seems inconsequential to most outside of the UK. It very much as it’s own globally recognized cultural identity, I’d argue - certainly in the Anglo-sphere, but likely in most other nations’ eyes as well.
