Such an epic experience Travis! This video is insane!! I love reliving each of these shoots and hearing your commentary. From the perspective of the student, Travis is an amazing instructor, great guy all around and super knowledgeable. If you’re considering one of his workshops, don’t hesitate, take action. You won’t regret it.

Great video. I discovered it because I noticed a comment you made on another site asking about whether permits were required at the Nelson Dry Lake. I am assuming the shots you took with the flowing dress and fabric, after the shoot at the ghost town, were at the lake bed. I live in Phoenix and have been to the ghost town and obviously driven past the lake bed. Anyway, I am curious, did you need any kind of permit to shoot there?
@travisharrisphotography

YES! We needed to contact the town of Henderson, NV and get a permit. It was around $250 for the day.

I love watching you work with bright desert light and often a single B10 - it gives hope to us poor shooters w/o a full crew and a generator!! What lens are you working with when you are close to the models- fairly wide it seems (and I love shooting with my 17-35 - not everything has to be an 85 from further back!).

Thanks so much. The starburst effect happens when you have the lens stopped down a ton. So you can try f/16 as a good starting point. It's different on every lens, best with ones that are wide.

Hi Travis, beautiful shoots and great locations, thank you for sharing. 2 questions: which filter do you use on your lenses during those shootings ? And I often feel not to have enough power with my 2 B10, especially in HSS, and I’ll have to bring the flashes often to near to the subject for my taste, any suggestions? Hi Travis! Great video and very informative. You have photographed in HSSL, I think and on the lenses was a polarizing filter? Recently I own two B10 Plus, but I have no experience with HSSL yet. If the flashes (do you both operate in HSSL?) Are operated, then the Akus will not have a higher power consumption. Best regards from Munich, Charly
@travisharrisphotography
4 жыл бұрын
Hi Charly, A little confused on the question.. but, I will try. If you use HSS than yes, both lights would be effected, as this is activated on the remote. But, yes, HSS draws more wear and tear on the flash tube for sure.. so I avoid this at all costs.

Hey Dean! Thanks man! yeah, I know. lol. Truthy, if I went back.. I would prob. not get one for the flat bed area. But, the Valley Of fire there is no way around it. Plus, the other thing.. is because I am on KZitem, and people always want to cause problems.. if I were ever to be reported, I would need to prove that I had a permit. This is the other reason I got them.

So the permits were only for video purposes right? I've always wanted to go to Nelson's ghost town but everytime I want to go, my plans end up changing :(
@travisharrisphotography
5 жыл бұрын
For Nelson's you don't need any permit. Just pay hourly. It was more costly for me, because I had a large group with me. But if it's just you and a model it's not much at all. The permits were required for the valley of fire, and the dry lake bed. This is where the cost and hassle came in.
@bsm1th99
5 жыл бұрын
@@travisharrisphotography I'm surprised the valley of the fire and dry lake bed required permits. One of these days, you need to travel here to Arizona. Lots of awesome locations. I could even set you up with some local models and MUA"s.
@travisharrisphotography
5 жыл бұрын
@@bsm1th99 Yeah, the Valley Of Fire is the most strict place I have ever seen. There was ZERO chance to walk around there with any type of pro setup. Rangers patrol everywhere, and they did in fact check on us during the shooting. The Dry Lake Bed would be possible maybe without a permit, but.. when your flying across the country for all this.. LOL, you dont want to take any chances. Also.. FStoppers did a post last year of a photographer that was sued for posting content at the Valley Of Fire and Red Rocks without a permit, and they forced him to take it down! So, this can haunt you eve after the fact too! Definitely would love to check out AZ!!

The only thing that worries me about choosing a B10 with Magnum over a B1 with a 5ft octabox is the uneven skin lighting between the upper and lower body of the subject as the magnum doesn't appear to throw a wide area of light. Tough call to be honest.
@travisharrisphotography
5 жыл бұрын
I'm very happy with the results. A 5ft Octa is not practical for most work. Even in a b1 it sucks way too much power. I would never use a modifier like that for shots like this. But with that said you may like that look. If you want to use this I would consider the ELB 1200 from Elinchrom.
@charbelb6661

@@charbelb6661 yeah you will see in this video Peter and Tom used that for there shots. It's got a little more punch I guess. But the b10s were also perfect in my shots. Part of this is the fact I don't personally like big soft light when I'm using the hard sun. I like to match hard sun with hard mods. I also love that sharp contrast and pop I get. That's all. For sure I would go for a elb 1200 if you want this kind of power with a big 5ft bank.
