I hold all these. I’ve been adding to them as the prices have come down. My dividend income has steadily risen. As for TROW I got in a bit early, $124, but have added shares and reduced my basis and increased my income yield. Thanks Chuck for teaching us how to analyze and invest.

You were NOT wrong because it is always, always, situational .... We always do the best we can.. investing or speculation: we always do our best. When you first started your youtube channel you were really, really, focusing on PE ~15ish , when others were ignoring it. In stocks where the **quote* margin of safety was pointed out below PE of 15. Then you started expanding to other measures than PE ... such as those used to judge mega-growth or REITs ... PE of 15 still has strong merit as many people are just now learning. Your software is amazing, and helps a lot!!
@readmeat4vegans829
Жыл бұрын
INDEED - PE of 15 or PE less than long-term growth is important. I would even suggest that top PE you should be looking for is situational. I believe Benjamin Graham had a lower PE he was looking for, but the market was different in his time. I also believe the dividend yield you should be looking for as a minimum has also shifted - higher - due to inflation becoming a factor again after a 20 to 30 year hiatus. Take away - you need "base metrics" that determine what to look for. And then adjust.

Hindsight being 20/20 I paid too much for both 3M and TROW but as you said in today's video (I had already noticed) that 3M is recovering quite nicely. One of the things that made me jump on T Rowe Price is they have no debt. Very, very good reminder about the difference between a long-term investor (and hence a long-term investment horizon) versus a short-term trader. Nothing wrong with being a trader but traders should not be confused and think of themselves as investors. Peter lynch said stock prices can easily go up or down 50% in any given year. An analyst is not right when the stock price goes up nor is he wrong when the stock price goes down in the short term. To an investor (not speculator), the fundamentals matter, and matters a lot. And to end, getting 4 out of 5 is an extremely good result. Peter lynch says to get 6 out of 10 correct is already an achievement.

Hi Chuck, thanks for the great video! I am long on three of the five stocks ( $MMM, $MO and $TROW). I am convinced that they all are great value plays now. Can you do a video analysis on $HAS (Hasbro)? Thanks! Regarding that viewer's comment, I want to say that having a long term vision is very beneficial. I run a self-picked stock portfolio all of which are long term dividend payers. In the past several years (3 years and 4 months), my portfolio has beaten SP500 by ~ 15% (CAGR roughly 4% higher than SPY). There is nothing I own that is fancy. Quite opposite, I own a bunch of very boring blue chip companies. There is ONE thing that I am very careful about: always and only buy when stocks are trading at attractive price. I do not follow the trends and do not care about the "hot stocks". I do own $AAPL and $MSFT, but my Apple shares have returned nearly 250%. My $MSFT is a very small position and I only buy when I feel it is reasonably priced but now it still not cheap enough. I also own $TXN, $AVGO and $IBM as my "technology sector" holdings. Eight months is nothing! Even 8 years is not very long. If you are patient, it will pay off. Being patient is difficult these days, but what you described ("expecting whatever return within several months") is speculation not investing. I mean, think about it: what can a company do in less than a year? Mostly not much.

Bert in my humble opinion there is a difference between market price (impact of interest rates) and the intrinsic value (fundamentals). All I'm saying is that I base investment decisions on the return in real terms that I believe the company can generate. Just my humble opinion, regards Chuck
@snoomtreb
Жыл бұрын
@@FASTgraphs thanks for your answer Chuck. I actually think the two are related. Say I have a stock that has owners earnings of 10%. And gov bonds are 4%. That is a risk premium of 6%, so pretty good. However if gov bonds where 10%. Then not so much. Then you'll probably expect 16% (ie lower price) to get to the same risk premium of before. While fundamentally the stock hasnt changed. It hasnt matter for the last say 10 years with close to 0% gov bonds. So when you look at historical multiples, they will be higher then current expected multiples.

I've been looking into trow but have decided against it. Much of the revenue gained by this company is through actively managed funds and the trend has shifted in the overall market towards passively managed etfs and index funds. Trow assets under management shows only a very small percentage in these types of investments, consequently, they will not perform well as they have in the past. The stock has not participated in the recent market rally and that is very telling.

Benjamin Jordan: THANK YOU FOR A GREAT REQUEST! It is my opinion that looking at where a process does not meet your expectations is an often overlooked step in learning - a VERY IMPORTANT step. Mr EVALUATION 🙂: THANK YOU FOR A GREAT (as usual) VIDEO! Many KZitem creators do not follow up on where their past videos -might have- given some viewers the idea that their process gave a recommendation that has not worked out. It takes courage to do a follow up video and say your process has limitations (or was wrong in this instance), or explain why the viewer's perception was wrong and that your process is not a ''crystal ball'. And, you have often said FastGraphs is the start (or just a part) of the stock evaluation process.. Thank you both for this excellent explanation for this HOWTO video - HOWTO because this is a HOWTO on how to use FASTGraphs information as a PART of stock evaluation (and PATIENCE :-) ). With My 50 years of experience I can categorically state that what you said is not true. An ETF or any other packaged products will own too many overvalued stocks within the portfolio to compete with a well selected well-designed individual stock portfolio. Furthermore, you cannot control the yield if you're an income investor or the growth if your total return investment. But if you're afraid of work then by all means invest in your ETF. I would rather not invest in companies through an ETF that I would not be willing to buy individually. Regards, Chuck
