The fact that you didn’t include any brachy breeds, the Doberman, or the Labrador is shocking. As someone who is about to become a veterinarian I can say with working for a vet even for just a short amount of time we rarely ever get German shepherds the most common breeds we get are Branchy breeds, Dobermans, and labradors. Dobermans especially suffer from heart issues they’re notorious for heart failure and thats coming from someone who’s owned three Dobermans within the past couple years.

Exactly. A responsibly bred German shepherd is usually quite healthy. They were mass bred because Americans liked the look and personality. A responsibly bred purebred German shepherd will cost you about 2-3 thousand dollars. A puppy milled one will cost you a lot less. A good way to tell the difference is their back. A German shepherd should have a relatively straight back, a puppy milled one will have a more slanted downwards back a lot of the time.
@romeliaanddixie
Жыл бұрын
@@idonotliveinparaguay.2361 that last part is not true. Actually those “straighter back“ are terms used by puppy mills in backyard breeders to sell more dogs. There’s no such thing as a slope it’s called angulation and every German shepherd should have it it’s what makes them healthy. A dog who lacks angulation or how do you say has a straight back runs more risks such as having hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia and DM. Don’t just gloss over every single dog breed with a short snout that literally can barely breathe-
@Maja-gi2re
Жыл бұрын
With dogs with a short snout you do have to be careful when it's hot out, which is actually not hard to do, and if their breathing is a serious problem (it is not with every dog from a short snout breed), they get a rather simple surgery of the roof of their mouth that really improves breathing. So yes, breeds being prone to cancer or hip dysplasia is *much* worse than being sensitive when it's hot out.
@resben100
Жыл бұрын
@@Maja-gi2re Hi, thats a serious underexageration you made there. its not just when its hot out its constant, its not a simple surgery its the removal of a large amount of tissue and cartalige in their throught. almost all cannot give birth naturally and need surgery just for that, they also get way more infections as a result of the assive amount of wrinkles in their face. Pugs frenchies and enhlish bulldogs all have joimt issues from birth due to their body shape and inbreeding. king charles dogs skulls stop growing before their brain does which can result in braindamage and seizures. its pretty much all dogs if youre being 100% honest, dont even think about dalmatians, 1 in 3 is blind deaf or both

If you want a healthy dog: shop responsibly, don't adopt. An ethical breeder will do genetic testing for any illnesses or mutations, checks the inbreeding rate and has healthy, safe and well mannered dogs. The puppies even get care packages and the breeder will take the dog back if you can't care for it any longer. While shelters constantly lie about the breeds, histories of the animals, hide medical proplems, don't train the animals properly and shelters are a breeding ground for proplematic dogs.

Used to work at an ER vet, definitely saw a bunch of french bulldogs, pugs, and golden retrievers. If you are going to get a big dog (especially one with a deep chest), do what you can to prevent bloat as it is very deadly and expensive to treat. There is a preventive surgery that can prevent the stomach from twisting up if bloat ever becomes an issue. This isn't really an issue for small-medium sized breeds. Chihuahuas and some other small breeds commonly have heart conditions or liver issues. Moral of the story is to know what conditions are common in your breed and save up emergency funds for health situations. All dogs are susceptible to accident or injury, but certain ones genetically have prominent illnesses.

Pugs. Had two. One had a stroke at the age of 4 and died. The second lived to be 16 but she had joint issues, asthma, seizures and near constant UTIs.

and to think my mum wants a german Shepard. We could have one but we've got a massive pool in the garden so there is no room for it to run around every day

My grandparents have had three German Shepherds, of which I've met two, and so seeing that breed here was very sad :( Didn't know they had these problems.
