The fact that you didn’t include any brachy breeds, the Doberman, or the Labrador is shocking. As someone who is about to become a veterinarian I can say with working for a vet even for just a short amount of time we rarely ever get German shepherds the most common breeds we get are Branchy breeds, Dobermans, and labradors. Dobermans especially suffer from heart issues they’re notorious for heart failure and thats coming from someone who’s owned three Dobermans within the past couple years.

Exactly. A responsibly bred German shepherd is usually quite healthy. They were mass bred because Americans liked the look and personality. A responsibly bred purebred German shepherd will cost you about 2-3 thousand dollars. A puppy milled one will cost you a lot less. A good way to tell the difference is their back. A German shepherd should have a relatively straight back, a puppy milled one will have a more slanted downwards back a lot of the time.
@romeliaanddixie
Жыл бұрын
@@idonotliveinparaguay.2361 that last part is not true. Actually those “straighter back“ are terms used by puppy mills in backyard breeders to sell more dogs. There’s no such thing as a slope it’s called angulation and every German shepherd should have it it’s what makes them healthy. A dog who lacks angulation or how do you say has a straight back runs more risks such as having hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia and DM. Don’t just gloss over every single dog breed with a short snout that literally can barely breathe-
@Maja-gi2re
Жыл бұрын
With dogs with a short snout you do have to be careful when it's hot out, which is actually not hard to do, and if their breathing is a serious problem (it is not with every dog from a short snout breed), they get a rather simple surgery of the roof of their mouth that really improves breathing. So yes, breeds being prone to cancer or hip dysplasia is *much* worse than being sensitive when it's hot out.
@resben100
Жыл бұрын
@@Maja-gi2re Hi, thats a serious underexageration you made there. its not just when its hot out its constant, its not a simple surgery its the removal of a large amount of tissue and cartalige in their throught. almost all cannot give birth naturally and need surgery just for that, they also get way more infections as a result of the assive amount of wrinkles in their face. Pugs frenchies and enhlish bulldogs all have joimt issues from birth due to their body shape and inbreeding. king charles dogs skulls stop growing before their brain does which can result in braindamage and seizures. its pretty much all dogs if youre being 100% honest, dont even think about dalmatians, 1 in 3 is blind deaf or both

Used to work at an ER vet, definitely saw a bunch of french bulldogs, pugs, and golden retrievers. If you are going to get a big dog (especially one with a deep chest), do what you can to prevent bloat as it is very deadly and expensive to treat. There is a preventive surgery that can prevent the stomach from twisting up if bloat ever becomes an issue. This isn't really an issue for small-medium sized breeds. Chihuahuas and some other small breeds commonly have heart conditions or liver issues. Moral of the story is to know what conditions are common in your breed and save up emergency funds for health situations. All dogs are susceptible to accident or injury, but certain ones genetically have prominent illnesses.

If you want a healthy dog: shop responsibly, don't adopt. An ethical breeder will do genetic testing for any illnesses or mutations, checks the inbreeding rate and has healthy, safe and well mannered dogs. The puppies even get care packages and the breeder will take the dog back if you can't care for it any longer. While shelters constantly lie about the breeds, histories of the animals, hide medical proplems, don't train the animals properly and shelters are a breeding ground for proplematic dogs.

Or even worse, A MIXED BREED!!" my dog is a German shepherd X husky and she is literally the healthiest dog I know and even when she was pregnant and after she gave birth she was jumping over gates (which we tried to stop her because it's not great for them while they're pregnant), running around everywhere after anything and literally being exactly the same if she didn't just/was going to have puppies. My point is. Having a mixed breed if one of the breeds has very limited health problems is way better than having a dog with tons of problems that will affect their quality of life.

All my family’s dogs have been purebred and lived long healthy lives. The myth that mutts are healthier than purebreds has been disproven. Reputable breeders produce healthy purebred dogs.

My grandparents have had three German Shepherds, of which I've met two, and so seeing that breed here was very sad :( Didn't know they had these problems.

Sad that our demand for dogs lead to unethical breeding. But we keep asking to buy more and the cycle continues.

Chocolate labrador should definitely be on there. My chocy is only 4 bless her and she has numerous allergies and has really serious ear infections that really have an effect on her mood. We have been told by vets that all the chocolate labs they come across have some type of allergies or other health problems etc. I feel so bad for her but we have been told we can’t do anything about it other than keep giving her the meds that she is on which don’t get rid of her uncomfort (idk if that’s a word haha)

A lot of the larger dog breeds can I actually get a condition where it's called flipped stomach or twisted stomach. And the twisted or flipped stomach is caused when your large breed dog plays after it eats. You should let them sit for at least an hour to an hour and a half maybe two full hours before allowing them to run around and play. Because their stomach will flip. And they can cause the dog to bloat which could kill the dog if not caught in time.

What about chorkies? Two breeds who shouldn't be bread together are Chihuahuas and yorkies speaking as a mum of four who is constantly going to the vet with hip dysplasia in all four. Mine r rescues as the previous owners couldn't cope or afford their care.

I mean, it makes sense if you think about it. Dogs have probably been domesticated the longest, meaning humans have had 10,000 years to warp them into these animals. And unlike evolution, which filters out bad mutations or traits in animals for better survival, selective breeding is an entirely human action that may not prioritize the health of an animal.

My German Shepherd/Boxer mix passed away this February. He had Oral Melanoma. Not really treatable, even chemo doesn't work on this very cancerous disease. Have your vet always give your dog's mouth a twice-over. It could save their life. He was diagnosed in September 2021. It's a very fast cancer and average lifespan after diagnosis is 6 months. It destroyed us. He was only 12 years old.
