That Flat Tire needs a little sumpin’ on it... Jerry Adolphe nailed it in a previous Drumeo vid (iirc it was “Essential Shuffle Grooves”?) It has to have a loping feel, to imitate the flat tire. Jerry even throws in the middle note of the triplet as a ghost note so you REALLY feel it - boo-doo-ba-BOP-a-da. “Extra greasy, eh” as Jerry might say! Playing it too straight doesn’t work, it just becomes a kinda busy shuffle.

I'd classify all of them as grooves, not styles. Metal drumming is a style, Funk drumming is a style and so on. All of these would fall into the traditional/latin/african style.
@blackonthedrums
4 жыл бұрын
Stay in your lane bro. A lot of these "grooves" if not all, are from actual genres that have in a style in which to be played. 🤷🏿♂️
@buwumet
4 жыл бұрын
@@blackonthedrums if somebody wants me to play a certain groove, then they need to name the groove they want me to play. If they instead want me to choose the groove, they will ask me to play in a certain style. Take Metal drumming for example: You have the style of Extreme Metal Drumming which consists of Blast Beats, Skank Beats and fast double bass. Then you have the style of Djent drumming which incorporates a completely different style. You have basically a halftime beat but the kick does wanky and complex patterns in unison with the other instruments. Also, you can throw some Blast Beats in there, for good measure. And lastly I'd name the Classic/Heavy Metal style of drumming which consists of Rock beats mixed with double bass rhythms. Now, all of these styles generally have a very different style of drumming while they each use several different grooves. As for the fills, there are huge differences between the styles. For Extreme Metal you want your fills as fast as physically possible, for Djent more on the groovy side and for Classic/Heavy it's all about the size of the fill. Also, the drum sound differs between these styles. In Extreme Metal every drum has to have as much attack as possible, while the rest isn't that important. For Djent, you want a very punchy and processed sound to fit the more modern kind of music and in Classic/Heavy Metal the drums need to sound as big as possible. These are what I'd describe as three distinct styles of drumming: Not only the type of groove you play but also the fills and sound are distinctly different.

I'm 52, I'd say most styles I learned are gone. No fast jazz, only crappy blast beats. Show that fast swing from 30/40s. Or shuffle. U know 70 years ago beats were fast, no breaks. Was the pulse of dance over 30 years. Through the prohibition period etc. They'd go 2 secret speak easy clubs. (Secret clubs in restaurants) that's where the phone booth change came from. You had to be a pulse pounding Tony Williams type drummer. Most current drummers couldn't touch it. Steady 16 hand, with fat accents that r consistant. Not much video from those days. It's where Buddy and Gene flourished. Oh, gene kruppa came up with American grip after ww2. He was asked if he uses French, or German grip. He (Gene) proudly said, "I use the American grip" and whalla...

Poinciana is not a style, c'mon. It's a song, and the groove comes out of a whole tradition of New Orleans second line drumming that Vernel Fournier adapted for this specific context. Dear Brandon, allow me to disagree about Afoxé as a rhythm. Afoxé, also called Candomblé de Rua(street Candomblé) and Negreiro Pernambucano, is a street procession that occurs during the carnival with drums, agogo bells, brass and a lot of singing. It is an Afro-Brazilian demonstration with roots in the Yoruba people. Generally, its members are linked to a Candomblé an afro brazilian religion. The name of the rhythm is actually Ijexá, very popular in Brazil, its roots are form the Nigerian city of Ilesá, above there are 3 different types of Ijexa: Clara Nunes - kzitem.info/news/bejne/q2mKvWuwqamEZnY Filhos de Gandhy - kzitem.info/news/bejne/pml-umimnKqKkqw Dori Caymmi - kzitem.info/news/bejne/s3qPq3mGi3irhWU
