are you positive on the need for a roof over the deep mulch? The deep mulch for our chickens doesn't have a roof, and has its own issues, but i don't think too much moisture is our issue. how much rain/snow did it become an issue, and how much carbon was needed to fix it? In NJ. thanks!

Thank you for your questions! The purpose of the mulch or carbon is to absorb the manure and urine and if it is properly balanced with oxygen, and nitrogen, which is the manure and urine, then it will compost and shouldn't smell. When you don't have a roof over your pen and you have a lot of rain and snow the mulch will become saturated with the excess water and not be able to absorb the manure and urine that it needs to compost properly. Normally we have no problem keeping our pen, which does not have a roof over it, properly balanced with carbon and nitrogen in the summertime. The year we had pigs in the fall and raised them through the winter we began having problems with over-saturated carbon. We attempted to remedy this problem by increasing the quantity and frequency that we added carbon to our bedding, however, we were never able to add enough carbon to fix the problem. It just ended up being way too wet to properly compost. I'm not sure what other problems you may be having with your chickens, however, I do know from experience that with the chickens we had in our coop over winter, 100% under a roof, we had to stir the deep bedding and add fresh wood chips daily because of the high nitrogen concentration in chicken manure. The chickens, unlike the pigs, did not stir the bedding enough to incorporate oxygen into the bedding, which is needed to compost. I hope this has answered your questions. If you have any more questions please feel free to comment again. Also, I am planning on making another deep bedding video in the next week or so and would love to answer them there. Thank you once again for your time and your questions!

@@HumbleHavenFarm he was a little blunt about it, but I do agree. I'm glad you guys are having fun truly, but many of us are trying to get work done quickly to ultimately get back to having fun ourselves. this, by the way, is by no means exclusive to your content. nearly every creator does this. appreciate the information in the video and your openness to feedback! God bless!
