Siamese algae eaters are fun fish, but will grow fast and fairly large. Mine are now six inches in six months. I am also not convinced they eat that much algae. Mine have gotten lazy and eat when I feed. I had to buy big lipped plecos which did an amazing job with the algae. I know they grow bigger, but slowly anyway. Love to watch your videos.

I was one of a few who never had any algae problem in my tank. That was until oneday I was a little bit overzealous in feeding (and I changed the light spectrum). Then I had quite a bad infestation of hair/clado algae (can't tell the difference between the two, sorry). Since my shrimps seem to enjoy grazing on the algae, I let the algae grow as they please. However, last week I realized the algae just died by themselves without any intervention whatsoever. They just sort of detached themselves, floated around, then just disappeared completely. Coincidentally, summer just arrived in this part of the world. If I have to guess, my pothos (in the aquaponics reservoir) entered a growing period and soaked up more nutrients than usual, and the algae couldn't compete (theory supported by lots of new leaves sprouted by the said pothos plant). I'm now back to algaeless tank. In fact, the algae lasted less than 2 weeks. I hope the shrimps don't miss them too much.

Additional cures: 1) floating plants to cut light, 2) larger plants to use up nutrients, 3) leave a bare bottom area and feed above it to allow fallen food to remain accessible to fish. That vegetable carpet is an invitation for uneaten food collection.

Had a bluegreen problem in my 10 gallon and I just couldn't get rid of it. I finally gave in and did basically a 100% tank change. Water completely replaced, substrate/plants removed and cleaned. I completely scraped the tank clean. After refill and re-adding the plants (without substrate for now as these plants don't particularly need it) the tank is completely spotless and has been for a week. Going to be adding some more plants and a bacteria starter as the entire tank is basically a fresh setup again.

My dad had close to 60 years in the hobby and had some UNIQUE ways of dealing with hair algae. Your fork idea is part of it but there is something better along the same lines. A simple bottle brush. The spines are thin & soft & You just twirl it like the fork in spaghetti. Then take the fork and use it to pull the algae off the brush in a bucket of water. Your information is very right on. Between the two of us (he always knew better but before med school, I got my BS in Biology with friends who wound-up being marine biologists and know a lot as well but I think my dad had seen just about everything in his 60 years with his tanks. When he passed away I took on his pride and joy, his 400 gallon Bala Shark Tank and when setting it up in my home after he passed away I had this problem with the green hair algae & a green water algae bloom which was caused by my ignorance in buying a light which was completely inappropriate for the tank (it was one of those grow-lights for plants) as I had never had a planted tank (and don't think I ever want to again) but could use some advice as to what is best in lighting (I dropped the box with the lighting equipment from dads and a number of things broke and since many of the fixtures were quite old I bought new lights and I think I made a total mash of it. I myself am rather new to the hobby, however, I did a lot helping my dad in the last 2 years of his life and am a pretty fast learner and also know when I need HELP! I do know he HATED Fluval Products, he claimed they were worse than 'Tetra' Products & he HATED Tetra Products! He had his first tanks in high school which would have been in 1945 & only packed them away when my brother, sister & I were born because he had had enough of pulling toys out of his tanks (I remember thinking the fishies might like to play too......dad did NOT appreciate the heart behind it) and started with his tanks again when we were in high school. Altogether he had 60+ years in the hobby so I do respect the things he taught me if for no other reason his tanks were BEAUTIFUL. My eldest brother and his wife adopted his 250-gallon reef tank which had been his dream tank. Sadly, he did not live to see it completed. He had only been working on it for 15 years. We managed to move that tank to my brothers in NC with the loss of only 1 Australian 'Duncan' Coral. Everybody else is doing fine particularly his 'Flower Anemone's' of which there were doz's of all colors which he had spawning regularly with many little 'Sexy Shrimp' dancing all over them. I'm running on but I am so happy to have found you on KZitem. Most of the things I would watch on KZitem were more along the lines of 'Furry Critters', particularly monkeys as I have a Grivet who is my baby and who now has a special love of fish particularly my Black Ghost Knife Fish. I probably have the only monkey who loves a fish but my little 'Ghost' loves here and comes to the glass to see her and will come up and take treats from her hand! Thank you so much for all your help and any suggestions will be eagerly welcomed! Grá Dé, Margie

Tip #6. Get some floating plants to suck up the excess nutrients in the tank. Duck Weed, Amazon Frogbit, or Water Lettuce. Even floating Anacharis or Water Sprite will out compete the algae for the extra nutrients in the tank. Algae eating fish or shrimp may help but they are just a Band Aid solution. Either cut the photo period or get plants that will out compete the algae.

Rather than Amano shrimps, i put Cherry shrimps or other shrimps on my 4 Aquariums. It's more cheaper and they can breed easily. For the left over foods, I put my Dwarf Lobster and Dwarf Corydoras to do the jobs. Normal Corydoras can also do the jobs. And if you worried about the *ehem* poo, that's where the plants job are. So basically, it's like this: The left over foods will be eaten by the Dwarf Lobster/Corydoras, the waste will be absorbed by the plants, if there's an Algae, the shrimps will eat them all. You can put the Siamese Algae-Eater but remember, you have to find the *True* SAE. Also, the plants will be a good hideout for the baby shrimps so the SAE or the Cardina will not eat them.

I would't recommend doing a drastic change from 8hr down to 5hr light, thats kinda big change and I would't recommend doing anything less then 6hr light every day considering most plants needs at least 5hrs of light before they reach their photosynthesis peak and best way to reduce algae is healthy strong growing plants. I'd say its better to slowly reduce the light by 20-30mins every week and try to find the sweet spot for ur setup so ur still geting good plant growth but not geting algae cus too much light.

If you don't have shrimp and sensitive fish, you can try to overdose excel for two to three days. It works great for me! SAE are not the best choice in my opinion. 1 - they get really big. 2 - they suddenly stop eating algae and start eating whatever you're feedding the rest of your fish. 3 - they produce a lot of waste! Endlers are a better choice! They're small, beautiful, produce very little waste and eat algae all day long!

*First Off I just want to say Much Respect to* #AquaPros *But i DISAGREE with most of what is presented in this video. First 50% water changes on a planted aquarium causes a big unbalancing of the tank each week you do it. cut back to 10-20% water changes per week to create and maintain a balance. Algae biggest helper is an unbalance in the tank paramaters. 2.) the fork thing is a waste of time, to remove that green string algae just take a gravel vac hose without the big plastic tube, get in your tank stir it up and syphon it out the water. 3) DONT DO DAILY WATER CHANGES- your fight is with the algae not the tank. let the algae build up for a few days, then remove it. That way your tank isnt constantly unbalanced and plants still a chance to grow and uptake nutrients. 4) You dont want to deplete the tank of excess nutrients. You want the plants and the Algae to uptake those nutrients then remove the algae so next week the plants are growing stronger and more plentiful than the algae. eventually the plants will out compete algae for the available nutrients because the plants will be growing stronger, healthier and more plentiful each week. 5) Dont adjust your lighting, again it will cause an Unbalance and less light only helps the algae thrive while making it harder for plants to grow. 6) add snails. snails eat left over food and algae. i would get nerite snails so they cant reproduce and cause a pest problem. Personally i found that when fighting algae less is best, you just have to handicap algae so the plants can get a leg up.* *But Long story short guys is do what works for you, my above post is just my opinion and what works for me but i'd thought i'd share because what i do is almost opposite of* #AquaPros

@kylomeekthosakafilthycasua5208

Algae & Plants in your aquarium are competing against each other for whatever nutrient source is available. Algae in general has lower requirements than plants. so for example if your having an algae problem and you reduce your lighting (output or run time) your basically helping the algae and hurting your plants because the algae will utilize the limited Light Source better than the plants will. Leading the algae to get a leg up in the competition against your plants. Thats why i prefer to try and leave things as they are and physically remove algae myself. *My basic method is this: In 1 week i grow my plants a little and i grow some algae. i do a water change and physically remove as much algae as possible. Then going into the next week my plants will have grown a little and the algae will have been cut back. i've still got some algae but my plants will have grown and will eventually out compete the algae.*

Algae popped up when everything was going great and completely killed my nice bush of alternanthera reinecki mini. It’s that green algae that sticks to plant leaves and has small hair off the side of the leaves if anyone has tips for that.

Love the channel. But I have to disagree with the statement you can't hurt with more water changes.. example every time I do even a 10% water change I get a small blue green algae bloom. I have high levels of phosphates and water changes feed algae for me. I go over a month or so because I never see nitrates or nitrites. The plants see to keep up with things. Also light feeding makes for a healthy tank.

I've done blackouts on my planted 90. You only have to do it for about 4 days, and it should be a total blackout (meaning wrap your tank in towels), not just turning off the lights. Works like a charm and for 4 days the plants can handle it fine.

Use a toothbrush to remove the hair algae. No, not the same toothbrush you use to brush your teeth. Use a dedicated brush for your aquarium.

Olivia Penrose you do not! It DOES help plants flourish and grow much quicker though.
