I've watched several hundred overland camping videos but I think you're the first one to cover "survival kits" and for winter camping it's so important to be prepared. A couple of years or so a man died in Oregon when his car broke down on a road that branched off of I-5. The man's wife and child (or children) remained in the car when he decided to go for help. The first responders found him face down in a creek less than two miles from his car. His family were eventually rescued. His car contents did not include any type of survival kits. My car is filled with redundancies from bug out bag, clothes bag (winter type), spare blankets, food, water, cooking kits, tools including snow and survival shovels, snatch strap and so on. I could light up my vehicle enough to be seen from space :) I vowed that if I ever die in my vehicle it will be from old age.

At least the drastic weather change resulted in a good, impromptu topic. One additional item I always carry is a second spare tire. I learned from a friend who was rock hunting in central Oregon and cut two tires on the rocky terrain. He wound up walking about 10 miles out to a highway for help.

I my younger years I worked for the State of Nevada. My job required me to be in the back country year around. I always carried on my 4x4 truck 2 sets of chains, tow straps and chains, come along and 3 short metal fence poles. I used the fence poles as a anchor for the come along. As you know Nevada does not have many trees for anchors. By driving the poles in line about 2 to 3 feet apart taken the chain attached on the top the first pole then to the bottom of the 2nd pole then to the same of the 3rd pole. I rolled my truck up side down on washed out road once and was able to pull my truck back on its wheels. I was over 60 miles to the closed town. A come along or winch will not work without a good anchor.

Good one, a good anchor is good thought, there are areas here where there wouldn't be anything to anchor too, very good suggestion. Jason

Military surplus large tent stakes. For extraction and then s high-lift jack to pull the Stakes out :-) Also you might consider a heavy duty come along. If you get stuck in a ditch again, drive the stake at 90 degrees from your truck, the length of your snatch strap away. Attach your strap to back of your truck on one end and the stake on the other and just back up. It will yank your rear right out. Repeat for the front and you back on the road. :-)

Great video. Something I always carry regardless of the season is a small air compressor. Deflating tires is a great way to get extra traction if you end up getting stuck in mud, snow, and sand etc. Given how much you have to deflate them to gain traction, carrying an air compressor to reinflate those tires I’ve found incredibly handy.

Maxtrax are worth their weight in gold. You're doing pretty well with the recovery gear, if you want something heavier than a come along you can go with a Hi Lift Extreme if you're not ready to buy the winch.

Another great Vid. I like that your vids are part tutorial, part friendly visit and sometimes a little philosophy. As stated below, your gear is a good balance. You didn't mention some bottled water or at least a personal water canteen. Also, if you were in snow country and your vehicle broke down, a pair of snowshoes to hike out. A goretex insulated hat is important to prevent hypothermia if you have cold wet rain just above freezing. You wear cotton jeans which are horrible when wet and cold. Wool pants or snow pants that you can slip over are better. I also keep an insulated pair of coveralls with hood for blizzard conditions. A ski mask balaclava or wool knit hat doesn't take up much room. A down jacket or vest is wise for sudden temperature drops. Extra leather gloves and ski gloves in case yours get wet. Hand warmer packs. Your come along has a collapsible handle to prevent overload, An industrial version with stronger handle is better. An extra 100 feet of tow cable is useful where there are few trees. Same for a metal rod anchor to drive in when there is no tree nearby. I like a burlap bag, old blanket or small tarp to put on the ground in case you need to change a tire, put on chains, or work under. When you get miles off road, you need to be prepared for worst case conditions, especially at higher elevations. If you need to go thru water and then park several days in sub zero conditions, a blowtorch to unfreeze brakes is handy. Everything I listed, I have used or seen used.

Yeah Mattracks .... www.mattracks.co/ I have a double set of ratchet straps (1100# 27 feet) along with the tow rope, a small sledge hammer, and small HD steel crook stakes. Pound into the earth and double ratchet strap yourself out of a singular situation. Small metal rod also twists the irregular ovoid shape of the stakes, allowing them to be recovered, or re-used in a further location for further pulling out - or helping another person's stuck vehicle ... w/ or w/o your vehicle as an anchor (and a front-end winch or not) still using the double ratchets as a rearward retaining force. www.osh.com/Osh-Categories/Tools-%26-Hardware/Hardware/Automotive-%26-Garage/Auto-Accessories/Cargo-Control-%26-Towing/Keeper-27-Foot-x-2-Inch-Ratchet-Tie-Down/p/6798771 A second battery (always good for having with your switch-bypass installed ham radio/CB power supply - or keeping your tent heater up and running warm, off grid from the vehicle battery) - ask YT Lays on Ferns about losing his vehicle battery and walking 20 miles back into civilization for a new battery. And HD jumper cables. A second set of spark plugs ( you never know !).
