Of the five trends that you talked about, there is one that I wear- pattern mixing. That is because I live in West Africa, and styles are very different here. When we first moved to West Africa, some local couples talked to us about the culture to help us know how to adapt. One of the ladies (who would become a good friend) encouraged us to go to the market and buy fabric and have clothes made at the tailor. That shows respect to the culture and those around us, plus helps us to know an aspect of their lives. The outfit that I have made here that received the most compliments has a fabric with two patterns mixed. It's a more elaborate outfit than I would choose to wear normally, but it's been a good converstaion piece. I went to the tailor, saw a sample on a manikin, bought almost identical fabric to the sample, and asked him to make it for me. It also has a style that is very popular here in the top where the shirt is fitted to a few inches above the waist, and then the fabric is pleated or gathered to make a full lower part of the shirt. I'm sure there is a name for that type of shirt. Anyway, it's not anything I would wear in the US or Europe, but I'll keep wearing it here. :)

I appreciate your comment so much on this topic. Marie-Anne is describing French style, which so often looks good, and is admired the world over. However, African style is in sharp contrast, but nonetheless can look amazing, with pattern and colour matching and clashing. What is clear is that both styles are subsets of what is stylish; African and French styles perhaps could be represented by a Venn diagram showing two circles without intersection, they are very different, but both are extremely stylish, and can be respected and enjoyed. The other points Marie-Anne makes, about gold leather, ripped jeans, leather shorts, well, I'm not sure that they can be good anywhere 🤭

You are part of a group that is supporting a return to slow fashion, QUALITY not quantity, and buying the best we can at the time. I admire when you say, " I have had this for years" and it is still fashionable. This is the way I was brought up. I am teaching my granddaughters this as I hope to influence a generation. I love the hydrangea behind you! Gorgeous!! Many of these items appear to be couture fashion, always impractical, a designer's fantastic imagination perhaps, but no one, rarely, wears it in real life. They are designed to shock, get attention, and make a political statement. The three split dress to me, points to a loss of identity and confusion between the old and new. It makes me think of art and postmodern eclecticism. Rather than a fusion of traditional and modern, it comes off as confusion in terms of style. Perhaps the designer is confused and does not know where to draw inspiration from, or does it represent a cultural shift they are observing, and express in their art: fashion. The gold outfit to me represents unrestrained hedonism. The ripped jeans? They also point to a sad loss of identity, self-value and worth of the individual. I do have some ripped jeans with genuine rips but only wear them at home when working on projects. Some random thoughts in response to another interesting video. Thank you Marie-Anne. Your hair looks lovely today. Thank you for reminding us of the value of the individual and that our clothing should reflect this belief.

Thanks for another wonderful video, Marie-Anne! Agree with all of the trends, except for the first one. I guess I have a soft spot for the orange and pink combination as they are celebratory colours in Indian culture, and you will often find this combination in beautiful outfits and even decor for weddings etc. Obviously, I would only tend to wear these colours as part of an elaborate saree or other Indian outfit, rather than in my everyday Western attire! One thing that I would never be caught wearing is distressed jeans. I have such an aversion to this' trend' - not at all elegant or chic!! Keep the fantastic content coming! Love from London xx

I think French women will never wear: denim short-shorts aka “Daisy Dukes”, especially completely ripped and distressed, as are so popular here in the US. They are considered a wardrobe staple! It makes me sad to see middle-aged women, especially in their 50s and 60s, wearing these with their buttocks hanging out - it’s such a desperate hanging-on-to youth look, that has the opposite effect, especially with the long, bleached, curly hair often seen with them! I did buy a pair of leather culottes to wear with knee-high boots to wear next winter, but they cover the tops of the boots and are shorter pants, rather than long shorts. It is silly to wear leather clothing, or neoprene or fur, in the summer! I do like some mixed prints if they are very closely related, for example, I got a blue and white print skirt that has the same pattern going horizontally on one tier, vertically on the others, but the pattern is small scale, simple and only one color plus white. I like it a lot, but more colors, sizes or print, patterns or other variations would be too much. I do think pink and orange dresses could be pretty on darker- or warmer-skinned women, but as a cool-toned, pale-skin, muted-coloring type they are not for me. I suppose I fall somewhere in the middle of the Atlantic, in terms of trends!

I agree, all these trends look ridiculous and clownish. As a French woman living for many years in Canada, I also agree about the ripped/distressed jeans. I see them everywhere. I would never wear them unless it was to go milk cows. It is NOT by any means respectful to wear torn clothes in public. AND, the torn/ripped/distressed jeans sold in stores are so overpriced, people forget that to make these jeans distressed, manufacturers use a ton of chemicals, and most often third world cheap labor that badly affect the workers health. I personally wish they were banned from entering the country. If you absolutely want to wear such jeans, go to a thrift store, buy a pair of used and worn jeans for 50 cents, and distress them yourselves! There, I said it! Love your videos, Marianne! I've rarely been drawn to trendy; i.e. fashion, clothing. In fact, when I look at my wardrobe, I never realized that I tended to dress French chic! Lots of solid colors: black, blue, populated with solid-color tops: red, blue. Minimal jewelry. However, I never, ever wear white; it makes me look heavy. Good for you if you can carry it off!

I have to say, I like the first dress very much. Pink and orange often found in Indian culture.

How you explain it makes perfect sense. Those trends wear the women and we can't see the lovely person.

I don't like to wear a lot of prints, but my sister can pull it off. Boho style suits her. My build is different and I need to wear clean lines and structured clothes, or I look like a mess. In Canada there ard many people who start wearing shorts when the weather rises to around 10 degrees Celsius, so maybe the leather shorts would be at home here lol.

I agree with all. Another trend that seems to stay, which I absolutely detest is leggings with a short top! The younger women seem to love it, but I just can't stand it.

The only one I don't hate is slightly distressed jeans. I'm back to mostly shopping at thrift stores because that's the only way I can find anything unique.

I agree with your list! I would also include wearing sweatpants in public on your list. Not chic!!

I saw a video recently on "how to make sweatpants chic." Really. It didn't work, however. smh

While I agree with you many of these trends - such as leather bermuda shorts, gold leather, ripped jeans and too many prints, I must say I have discovered by default the magic of combining pink and red. It is a stunning combination and I have worn these two colours together a few times. I just love the vibrancy of the two bright colours together. It may not be strictly French chic but it is simple and eye catching.

I use to subscribe to Harper's Bazaar until about five years ago. For the reasons you are showing. So many of the trends are just...no...just say no. Maybe it's that I am older and I think it looks just garish or tacky. I don't know. I prefer classic items. If I were to obtain something leather (or an alternative source) in gold, it would only be a belt.

Or maybe a pair of scrappy sandals. Or a necklace. Really, some people have more money than brains...

I agree with you about these trends, although I have seen photos of Ines de la Fressange wearing them which really disappointed me. I do wear more print tops than French women. They seem to work well here in New Zealand, but never large or busy, as they do have some figure disguising benefits.

These are great examples, Marie-Anne, thank you! The leather examples are particularly ridiculous. Given how expensive a quality leather item can be, why would anyone in their right mind waste their money on such a passing trend? A classic pair of leather pants, for example, will never go out of style. Or faux leather, if it is of good quality. Or a lovely leather pencil skirt. Thank you for speaking your common sense and good taste. You are a gem.

I believe someone lounging around a backyard pool in California would wear the long orange and pink dress. Tiki torches and fire pits, bougainvillea and sunset or cacti flowers, orange groves, the beach with campfires. And desert and sand dunes...it would fit right in. Leis... very informal... Possibly Arizona... My late husband and his family were from Alsace.

As an Irish woman, I would never wear the clothes mentioned here, they offend my sensibilities. There's nothing classic or stylish about them. Thank you for the upload ❤
