Not only was the ad for a home warranty company distasteful, but I also thought the suggestion of paying down “five figure” debt by eliminating eating-out and takeaways to be moderately insulting. I think the average person already understands that you can’t afford to spend half of your paycheck on dining out. How about some more realistic advice for those of us making realistic paychecks, and still attempting to pay down cc debt accrued to more real-life situations like student loans, medical debt, or loss of property due to natural disasters, etc.

This video is a huge add :( Home Warranties are really predatory and the fine detail of the contract matters. You might be better off putting the $40 a month into a savings account each month and use that to handle unexpected home issues. We started doing this with all kinds of categories (home stuff, car, pets, etc) and the bonus is that should we come into a different situation where the category isn't applicable anymore we have freedom to move the money to another purpose.

I think there are reasonable home warranty companies out there. I know the one time I've had one it actually did end up paying out for a catastrophic failure of my heating system, but that's a super unlikely scenario. I really think the advice about warranties (or any form of insurance really) should be more about whether you can safely cover the cost of the worst failure that could be covered. The one I've had had a max payout of ~3000 dollars, and I feel like a lot of them are in that ballpark. So if you have enough of an emergency fund to cover a 3k cost, then you're probably better off being your own insurance company and just saving the money you would've spent on the warrantee. Same goes for health insurance and full coverage car insurance. If you know you can cover a reasonable accident repair of your car because either you or nature did something dumb, then full coverage probably isn't for you. But if you can't, you should probably have it. And since Medical bills (at least in the US) can basically bankrupt anyone that isn't a multi-millionaire, you should probably have health insurance.

Tempted to unsub due to pernicious shilling. Put your premiums into your emergency fund and invest in a $30 DIY manual from the hardware store. Had a policy the seller paid for; would not renew after terrible experience. In aggregate, aftermarket warranty plans of all kinds are a net drag on personal finance. If you're afraid of being unable to afford servicing it, you can't afford it in the first place.

1. Learn how to use credit cards strategically. As in never. Lol! Only in an emergency. By emergency, I mean someone died and you have to get on a plane and take time off work. 2. Always budget for a back up plan or like me...find other ways to afford things without spending money you don't have. shower breaks? shower at the gym. Microwave breaks, use a kettle for hot water to warm things and/or use the microwave at work. 3. Definitely automate your bills, yes your credit card is a bill. My gas and the electric company charge me less for having an automated monthly payment. 4. Spend less than you earn. Well that's a given. Stop trying to keep up with the Joneses or whatever latest social media fad trend is occurring that involves spending money. 5. Track every dollar. If you have to stack envelopes do that. you should know where every dollar/Euro/peso/pound/Yuan/Yen/Won/Rupee/Dinar/Naira/Rand is going.

It is really telling how common it is for people in their 20s getting into credit card debt easily because they just don't really understand how credit cards work and how it affects their credit down the line. I'm very fortunate that when I opened my first credit card, my parents told me over and over to make sure I paid off my statement each month. Not particularly a huge fan of the huge ad in the middle of the video though, it makes it seem so disingenuous.

My situation was VERY similar to this! Even now that I’m debt free and earn a comfortable salary, I continue to budget and track every dollar I spend. Once I have my savings, bills and retirement contributions out of the way, I can spend my “fun money” with no guilt because I know exactly what I have. I’ve been debt free from a couple of years now. Tackling my debt required a lot of sacrifices but was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.
