Ugh. Diplomacy is one of those games where the idea always sounds awesome, and everyone looks forward to making an event out of it. But I have NEVER experienced a game of Diplomacy where everyone wasn't drained, frustrated, and angry by the end, with half the players being effectively eliminated an hour or two in, abandoning the game to just go do something else.

Diplomacy had a score or two of variants, usually played by mail/email. For instance, the Pure variant with X spaces for X players, all bordering each other. And some regular "sequels" like Machiavelli and Game of Thrones. :)

Bought Meeple War after watching your review. I actually bought the last copy that Miniature Market had, and I'm very happy that I did! Played it with friends for my birthday, and it was a new/unknown game for everyone. Everyone agreed that it was a fun game. Several said they'd happily play it again! Hopefully I can find more copies to gift away, and to donate to two local convention's Game Libraries (Boskone 59, & Arisia). I need to get more table time with this, but I think the theme helps it from being taken seriously and personally by players. That said, I'm curious to see what a successful re-theme would look like.

Weeel, I gotta say, not that I own it, or played it, but I considered Meeple War back then *because* of it's presentation. Personally, I couldn't care less about a serious theme or big minis or whatnot. I think the box cover is really nice, I find it got me looking closer at the game, and the fact that it "just" uses wooden Meeples, instead of "serious" minis, is just charming.

"Awful Green Things from Outer Space" by Steve Jackson games was a great humans v aliens game. Silly. Simple, and fast paced, but fun. All the humans have to fight with is improvised weapons. The first time any weapon is used in a game you randomly determine its effect. The effect then stays the same for that weapon for the rest of the game. This makes the games endlessly variable. Most of the times I have played it the outcome was in doubt until very close to the end.

My favorite board game of all time is Dune by Avalon Hill. 6 playable factions, each one unique but well balanced with different strategies, and in some cases different winning conditions. Throws in a bit of roleplaying too, when you practice your evil laugh as the Baron Harkonnen when you reveal a traitor! A great combat system involving everything except for dice. Win solo (very hard) or by alliance within 15 turns, but if nobody wins, then the Guild wins!

Left us all with some real respect for the lads who did it for real.

Great theme for a list. I have a few games that I absolute adore but don't seem to get a lot of love (in no order): 1. Legacy: The Testament of Duke de Crecy - so, so good. Worker placement in which you build family trees; absolutely fantastic. 2. Village - one of the best games ever made, in my opinion. Unfortunately, it needs its Port expansion which perfects the balance & adds even more fun when traveling and its Inn expansion, which improves the replayability, which is prolly why it doesn't get a ton of attention. The game has a time mechanism and you're trying to balance between having family members to do stuff and speeding up time (with plagues) to get them into the book of chronicles. Oh, and with the expansions, every strategy is perfectly balanced, which is just fantastic. 3. Ginkgopolis - to be fair, it has been out of print for a long time. Very unique drafting, tableau-building & area control game with an elegant design. It could use a better player aid, but mechanically, this game is absolute perfection. 4. Cat Lady - newer game, but oh-so-ignored. A very fun open-grid drafting and set collection game in which you want to hoard cats, but you lose points if you can't feed them. You score extra points for costumes and toy sets. I've never met anyone who didn't enjoy playing it, even though many have been reluctant to try it due to the oddball theme. 5. Mottainai - the ultimate game of combo-creation and the deepest 30-minute game money can buy. Every card is potentially broken, except no card is broken because everything is so powerful. Insanely satisfying. Hurt by how hard it is to learn the game; it takes a while to grasp it. Often ignored in favor of the related Glory to Rome, but Mottainai is incredible, pretier, and super-cheap.

When I was a kid, we had the Mad Magazine board game. It was a parody of Monopoly. The object of the game was to be the first player to lose all of your money. Either by landing in a certain space or drawing a card, you would have to trade your money with another player or change seats with other players. I don’t think that it has been in production in at least 30 years.

I lament a board game from 1985 that disappeared: Fortress, made by Hal Leggett of Alliston, Ontario, north of Toronto. Up to 6 players each got 4 miniatures: Axeman, Swordswoman, Wizard and Thief. Move them around a fortress map with small gold plastic poker chips placed on many of the squares. Each chip you collect gets you a card drawn from the 60-card deck. Most cards are treasure but some are hazards like traps or monsters who materialize (up to 4 black monster miniatures at a time could be wandering on the board). Be the first team to collect a set quantity of gold AND leave the fortress, or concentrate on confronting the other pieces in combat dice-offs to be the last team standing. www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/17429/fortress

My wife and I played Cave Troll 4 times last weekend. I kind of didn't want to like that game. 1) No asymmetric powers. 2) For some reason you use monsters AND heroes to get advantage. 3) Smallish player board with with fairly average art.. Personally i would also include "Nuklear Winter 68". A Great alternative history military game, which takes place at post ww2. Although it is a hassle to learn because of all the little things you have to keep in mind before doing an action. In the first few games a constant checking of the rulebook can slow down gameplay and destroy the motivation. Playing Solo is possible but its like playing chess against yourself (It is always a challenge because your "enemy" is equally as skilled as you and knows your every thought and future move). Nonetheless my absolute favourite to play when relaxing alone with a cup of tea.

I love miniatures games myself, mostly for the visual appeal. I really like your 1st two (#5 & #4) suggestions and am interested in checking them out? As for the others, I'm not so sure about? If I could add some games to this list, I would add 'Fireball Island' as probably my #1 choice and/or 'Heroscape' ( I can't believe they stopped making it ) as a very close #2, as it provided war miniatures of almost all time periods and genres; as well as being able to add just about any other miniatures from any other game (like Horrorclix, Heroclix (Marvel & DC), Star Wars, AD&D, WH40K & Fantasy, Zombies!!! Plus you could design all sorts of different boards to play on. Completely customizable. The only problem was the board pieces took up a lot of room after buying some of the expansion box sets. For my #3 pick, would be 'Dark Futures' car combat tabletop game. I really wish they'd rerelease it with the same type of miniatures? Thanks for sharing your opinions with us.

Great video! Thank you! Here's my list: HeroClix : Not sure why this fell out of popularity...maybe the powers/abilities/"meta" that gets convoluted? It's still a great superhero game that is ridiculously dirt cheap! The Duke : It's simply one of my favorite two player chess-like game. Quick, easy....brilliant! Jamaica : Simple, easy entry-level game that's great for families and newbies. Galaxy Defenders : Love this game! Great sci-fi with a ton of movie references. Really good A.I. system for co-op play. Swords & Sorcery stole a lot of thunder from this same system but made it really complex with player upkeep. Wings of War/Glory : a precursor to Star Wars X-Wing miniatures...different but similar in many ways. Both WWI and WWII versions are great! My favorite game that very few play or know about.... Level 7 Omega Protocol! Think Descent (2nd edition) with the theme of Aliens. One vs All (which sadly isn't done much) where the Marine's actions "feed" how much the alien overlord can do by "adrenaline". It's a brilliant game mechanism and makes this easily one of my favorite games.

Dune. A great asymmetric strategy game based on the books, made all the way back in the 70s! The only problems were poor quality components and being too long. Fantasy Flight tried to speed it up with Rex but completely screwed the balance, and they had to drop the Dune setting for a Twilight Imperium setting no one cares about. These days everyone is gushing about Root's asymmetry when it's really a dull shallow affair, which makes me wonder if people have even played a decent asymmetric game before.

Slaughterball!!! It fixed everything that was wrong with Bloodbowl. 2-4 coaches at once, points for scoring and also for injuring the competition, no "one error and lose your turn", three modes of play between light on rules for introducing new players, to deep and satisfying league play for those who like to build and improve your team. Unfortunately Games Workshop relaunched Bloodbowl soon after Slaughterball came on the market...they even put out a Slaughterball style variant called Blitzbowl. Apparently they were worried about the competition.
