I’ve been observing blue jays for years too. They are amazingly smart! First I have an adorable male I call, Fluffy because he has a very fluffy tummy, he literally comes to my window and waits for me to see him so I will give him peanuts. Last summer a sparrow flew into my window accidentally and was stunned sitting on the deck a Bluejay flew down next to him roll him over and literally used his beak to press on the sparrows stomach until the little bird started breathing again. Then he flipped him back over onto his feet and waited until the little guy flew away....I was amazed!!

Pretty much. I haven't ever seen blue jays in this part of the country, but I've seen grey jays and there's an increasing number of stellar's jays living around town. At an apartment complex where I formerly lived I would put out bread in the front yard for the birds and squirrels. An older male Blue Jay would come every day and sit in my next door neighbor's tree and yell for me. If I didn't come outside right away my neighbor would call me to let me know that I was being paged. Here's the kickers: I'd always go outside and say "Hello my Blue Jay friend!" and then we'd have a nice conversation. All that food around yet he wanted to talk first and then he wouldn't touch any food on the ground, he wanted me to throw down fresh just for him! He trained me somehow. A year later he was still coming by but now he brought a male Blue Jay friend with him. He was teaching this one that here was a friendly food supplier. It wasn't long after that that I no longer saw the old man. But his legacy came every day and we'd talk and I'd put down fresh food. Sometimes my neighbor would call me (she loved the whole scenario). I came to have MS and some neighbors on my other side who were drunken, yucky people so we moved and bought a nearby house. I tried yelling out the car window to him and even had my spouse play Blue Jay calls outside our house but I never saw him again. I'll always cherish the time I had with him and the old man.

They are very smart birds, when they see a cat or raven close by they will make so much noise that alerts the squirrels and other birds. They hide food in all places my patio is filled with a lot of oak seeds. If my bird feeder is empty they fly over the glass door to tap often till it gets filled. They keep my yard free from insects. Feeding them is an added benefit. Bad part is that they hide a lot of wild plant seeds in the yard which will often grow up.

One the third day...ta..da...I had a flock of bluejays of several different age groups. They had brought their fledglings over and it was noisy for another few days! @@feetgoaroundfullflapsC Hawks have their own place in the ecosystem. Many species were made extinct in some areas of my country because they upset the grouse that were being raised to be shot (I'm not going to start on why "trophy hunting" is for the sick of mind...). The ecosystems flat-lined. Eg with no natural predators, rabbits quickly got out of hand and basically ate the plants needed for the other key species. As a result the few pairs that were left in other parts of the country had to have protection - not just legal, but physical protection - and over the decades they've been reintroduced to the places they'd been wiped from. The ecosystems are now improving. I understand they're a pain for pilots, but let's be honest, they were there first! They probably think pilots are a pest and would have a better case for it!

Blue Jays have *amazing* abilities to make sounds and also to imitate other birds. Lang Elliott, a man well-known for recording birds, says on two of his bird song CDs that Blue Jays are capable of perhaps the widest range of vocalizations of any bird. Now, even if they are not #1, being near the top is quite a feat! On one CD, he plays (IIRC) 20 different types of calls and songs. Just the other day, I thought I heard a Laughing Gull. I simply don't hear those around my house, so it was rather unusual. (However, they do live nearby, since they frequent any large river or body of water in New Jersey - where I live.) I finally found the "gull" - it was a Blue Jay.

Only one Jay has lit on my peanut feeder, but I think it is too small for them to feel secure perching on it. They have occasionally tried the black oil sunflower seeds. In bad weather, I scatter peanuts on the ground for them. And I see and hear them in the woods below my house.

I have a few living in my backyard and also some wild rabbits. When the rabbits are in the yard you can count on a Jay sitting on the fence post and they will warn the rabbits if the neighbors cat comes over in hopes of bunny lunch. I have also seen the Jays playing with the rabbits. It's almost a game of tag. Seen a baby rabbit get tired of the game and the Jay came up and pecked him in the butt. The rabbit jumped straight up and the game was on again

Love blue jays, I have 3-4 in my back yard in Minnesota. I put a mix of black oil sunflower, peanuts, cracked corn and a little mixed seed out for them; today I was watching one of them pick through the food, sweeping his bill back and forth to toss out the food he didn't want! We get tent caterpillars here too so I hope they'll stick around and raise families over the summer! They are so smart.

My indoor cats love watching the jays. It's their favourite station on Cat TV. The jays, for their part, will perch on patio furniture right near the sliding glass door. They seem to enjoy showing off for the indoor cats, but when an outdoor cat gets in the yard, everyone knows about it. Also, we used to have a problem with flies on the patio, but not anymore, thanks to our friends, the jays.

Hi! What a wonderful video! I have many Blue Jays around my home. They are gorgeous birds but they have always annoyed me because they are so loud and bossy. I have 3 sweet crows that come every morning for their little pieces of bread I spread out for them along with their seeds. Some mornings the Jays are swooping down WHILE I’m still outside spreading my crows bread cubes. I will admit that they have actually made me laugh out loud a few times. I must say that your video has given me the greatest reasons to admire those bossy beauties. I will always think differently of them now! I thank you for that. I subscribed and can’t wait to see what else you have. Bird watching is such a joy! Caroline

Blue jays are part of the crow family. so the last tid-bit of them mating for life and having a close family bond didn't surprise me at all. Crows are known for having a family hierarchy and meeting up at a designated forest/feeding ground at least once per year, when the family perches they form a literal family tree, with the eldest going in the top branches and the youngest on the bottom or ground.

Ultra Instinct Vegeta My friends have many jays in their neighborhood. They spent big bucks fencing in their backyard so their small dogs could go out to play. But the jays dive bomb them. They now take the dogs to a dog park. Fortunately, they have a sense of humor about the entire situation. Although I thought they were going to smack me when I noted the neighborhood belonged to the Jays way before they moved in and spent money on their great big fence!

The blue jay may have planted the sunflower seed for himself, or the gardener. When hunting, many consider the blue jay a nusience because of giving away the hunter's location. It's just the opposite: the jay is the hunter's scout, and also tells the hunter he's moving too fast. Put out a bowl of chicken egg shells to supply birds with calcium.

Great video! Blue Jays are some of my favorite to observe. I have never found them to be mean or bully birds. I find them to be very cautious and methodical particularly with birds of similar size such as red winged black birds and grackles. They always seem to avoid confrontation with them. They do spook smaller birds but that is probably just a size thing. That said, they don't seem to mind sharing with Cardinals as they often feed together in my yard.

i love blue jays. i remembered seeing them as a kid, but since then had never actually seen one and thought they weren't around here anymore. that is, until i actually spent time learning bird calls and found out that they're still around here pretty frequently. last summer i had an awesome experience with a blue jay, when I kept hearing a cooper's hawk call from very nearby, but I couldn't find one anywhere. long story short.. using some binoculars, i discovered that it was actually the blue jay making the hawk's call and scaring away all the other birds so he could have my neighbor's bird feeders all to himself. Smart bird! and a very convincing impression as well.
