I find it easier to individually fret the notes out one by one, which is more movement but generally less painful (i have small hands)

I concur. Notice the lack of distortion, saturation, and resonance. Nowhere to hide. I suppose reverb (the Police being a good example) is a bit of a safety net but not comparable.
