if you use waxed parchment paper, the entire point of a wet pallet is nullefyed, because the waxed paper dos not let any water through. the effect that you witness there is the wax repelling the water content of the diluted paint. but the stipple glazing is a good way of painting. i am using it mostly with diluted washes.

there is no right or wrong answer here, so it depends, This was following sequence: Wine red, beige red, sickly pink (all from AK 3rd gen). You could switch the wine red (basecoat) for more brownish tones etc. The highlight colors can be either light pink or light yellows, also depends (for example "basic skintone" from ak would work. Regarding the shading, pretty much described in the video 💪

Lovely video and great examples, though I think your logic regarding the wet palette may be wrong. Let me explain; The wet palette is not getting dry because the sponge is holding all the water, I've never seen this and I have the same palette. The water is naturally evaporating which of course dries out the palette. What you're then doing by adding paper towels is in effect adding "more sponge" i.e. more material that will retain water, and more water takes longer to evaporate, which in turn makes the palette stay wet for longer. In short I would expect your trick to work, but not for the reasons you stated, I would think that adding another sponge on top of the first one would have an identical effect. This does make one beg the question why the sponge isn't thicker to begin with, it could easily be twice as thick as it is.

Paper towels on top of the sponge will not fix this issue for you. Even if you double sponge, it will not do much. You will want to get a more porous paper such as non waxed parchment paper, or get a palette provider that runs similar paper already. Redgrass is not one of them. Exemplar might be (i am still waiting for delivery but i heard it's better)
@necpwnz

@@Navtyr Thanks! Iam already transferring for non-waxed one, but it is still an issue while my paint dries in a 30 mins or even less. I do not like to dilute with retarder.
@Navtyr
2 жыл бұрын
@@necpwnz if you spread a very thin layer on the palette it is going to dry a lot quicker regardless of what kind of sponge or paper you are using. If you want it to stay wet longer, either mix more paint or keep a bigger blob of unmixed paint in one spot and take paint out of that when needed to use and thin down. Personally i haven't experienced non waxed parchment yet because i can't find it in my country and shipping a roll from US is absurdly expensive so i can't comment on how much of a difference that makes.

I find it interesting that you recommend waxed paper, since pretty much every other miniature painter recommends none waxed. Do the new re-usable hydration sheets from Redgrass work with their glossy surface?
@Zumikito

I guess that too much wax might also be an issue! The sheets? They work fine if you are used to their old non-reusable, but I still prefer slightly waxed parchment paper. Though if I travel, I take them.
@Bloodfencer1990

@@Zumikito I think too much wax creates a solid surface that stops any liquid from passing through the sheet in either direction.
@Navtyr
2 жыл бұрын
@@Zumikito Are you sure the paper you are using is waxed? Generally a coat of wax on the paper means that liquids will not go through the paper. Try to cut a small piece of paper and put a water drop on it. Does it stay in a blob consistency and the bottom side of the paper is dry? Then it's waxed. From your clip, the water was absorbed through the paper, meaning it looks like you are using non waxed paper.

Have you used the new re-usable hydration membranes from Red Grass Games? I was wondering how you feel about them. I can't get on with them. Paint reactivated well on them but I think that's more to do with Golden Acrylics thinner I use, the paint seems to dry out very quickly on these membranes vs the old type. It's nice to be able to wash them for re-use but I'm not keen on the drying time of paint on the membrane.

You say not to glaze because it takes so long, but isn't your technique just as time consuming, as you still have to lay down many different layers to get a smooth gradient? In fact isn't it more time consuming, as you have to mix all those colours, whereas with a glaze my understanding is that you're just repeatedly laying down the same colour? (disclaimer: I haven't started miniature painting yet, and I'm currently watching videos on painting in preparation).

I think you got your papers mixed up? The one you are using seems non waxed and the one you put to the side for comparison seems waxed as it is not letting the water go through. EDIT: I also tried the paper towel thing underneath the redgrass paper and the result was the same as without paper towels, just that i had to refill water even faster and the surface was all wrinkly. So in reality, all you did was get a non waxed parchment paper instead of redgrass paper which is known to not be porous enough.
