Thanks for the tutorial! The trick where you carve away the lows before importing/sampling sounds really useful! I've run into the problem where I want to use both lp and hp filter at the same time, but getting rid of the lows beforehand solves that problem :) I found that when resampling drum loops, if you keep the sample exactly 16 steps long, you can be very sure that you'll hit a transient when you set the start point to any interval of 15. For example 1, 15, 30, 45, 60 etc. That way when I slice up my resampled drum loops, I can just dial in the start point to around, say, 30 (usually end up at 29.85 or something, you don't need to be 100% precise), and I'm guaranteed to get a snare (depending on how I arranged the drum pattern before resampling, of course). I think this could work when sample chaining too, as long as each hit in the sample chain is placed on a 16 step pattern.

hi dave, quick tip that you may not know: when using sample chains, and if you space them evenly, you can press and twist the SAMPLE START encoder and it will jump between even fractions.... that way you'll always get the sample start right. it's still a bit uncomfortable (FUNC+encoder would be much better) but it works... I have sample chains with 30 kick samples and it works pretty well (I'm not sure but it probably has to be a certain amount of samples...)
@Davemech

Optimal chain length isn't about seconds, it's about divisions. If your sample count is proportional to the 128 steps of the sample start then you can scroll to them by using a pertinent whole number rather than trying to manually fine tune the start time by ear/ sight.
@Davemech
3 жыл бұрын
The sample start max value is 120. I found the optimal amount of samples for a chain and to still have a workable wave form is about 6 samples. Of course it depends on the length of the longest sample. As long as they are spaced equally you're fine, indeed. The seconds are important as well as to not fill up the RAM too much on a single slot. There's a balance there.

@Davemech
3 жыл бұрын
Hi Atomic, thanks ! You don't need a dominion to create these stabs. I create them on digitone as well, or pretty much any software (vst) synth. Start experimenting with a simple minor chord and a bucket load of delay. Modulate things like the attack phase of the amp or filter envelope, and delay parameters. You could use samples as well or loops but making it yourself will give you much more control and it will be more satisfying 😉 If you want to use dub samples I think websites like splice will offer bucket loads of them probably.

came across this vid as i'm trying to improve how I sample into the DT (not import). now i'm wondering about using a hardware eq before the input to cut out the lows. also, sometimes I dislike what the DT's normalizing does to a sound, any way around that, or to make it work better? lastly, is the faster way to name and save samples?? i've been playing with an MPC 2000xl and while it's ancient the way it samples, names, and saves, seems so fast and intuitive!
@Davemech
3 жыл бұрын
Heya, yeah always good to het samples into DT as you tend to use them. Pretty quick at naming now but i prefer preparing them in a daw, sum them to mono, then import them. Normalization doesn't actually change the sound at all. It only changes the amplitude. So no worries there ;) you have to make sure though that you aren't recording too loud into the sampler because that can have a slight compressing effect. So make sure the recording level meter doesn't hit the max. Stay well below that.

Yeah I did kind of. Will create a video of it as well. Basically I now I only use it for kicks since I use so many different kicks. 6 kicks in a chain evenly spread across time line in daw. This gives 120/6 = 20. Click and hold encoder to skip through increments of 4 with sample start to get to the exact starting point of each kick in the chain. In the video I'll go over further details.
@dobioobeats

Hi there, thx for the usefull videos. You talk about the advantages of recording directly into the dt instead of transferring because of the mono summing.. Is recording with jack inputs the same as with usb regarding the mono summing? I hope so because making a sample mono by taking just one channel seems a bit weird depending on the type of sound/sample.
@Davemech
5 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for watching. You can set usb as source at the sample recording page to record directly. Via the jack is more or less the same indeed. But when the samples are on your computer recording them via USB is better because you'll skip 2 conversion stages (digital to analog and back to digital). Another way is to sum your samples to mono in a daw using a utility plugin. And then import them through transfer app. Make sure they are 16bit 48khz Hope this is helps. Cheers!

I wouldn’t have through those to pre-HPF / EQ my samples before importing. Because my intent is to record *back* into my DAW, I can live with a bit of muddyness in the DT, knowing that I can EQ precisely when I’m in the DAW. I guess you are working towards a more performance based outcome, so such pre-preparation is critical?
@Davemech

Late response, but yes. Everything should sound as good as it can get within my machines. It also makes sure I make good choices when adding or removing sounds to keep an open sound in my mix. When I record for release I then also mix everything properly for release in a DAW.

Loving the videos so far. For chaining, it works well in ableton at 120 bpm to load 30 sample clips in an audio track and set the follow action to "next" on 16ths. Resample your clips as they trigger and cut newly recorded clip to 30 samples long. Then you can scroll with the "start" encoder pressed. Each increment of 4 will be a different sample (i find 30 samples is good for single hits, 15 1/8 samples for those with more tail). Good for kits and creating ''sounds' to be recalled later, also allows for some cool randomization. Probably be better to chain like-samples rather than kits for normalization/Eq purposes. I usually convert everything to mono and normalize within ableton, but I am not sure if this is best practice? Also curious about what other processing tools to apply to beef up a kick or prep a found sound for use with dt (I think you address this in another vid)? Mostly interested in punchy low end. keep it up

Hey, Dave. In the tip 5. I am wondering how are you recording the input from USB? Can you record an audio from your DAW directly (via usb) into digitakt, via overbridge? Is there any video/resource where it explains that? I am cracking up my head trying to achieve that. Usually I see it from DT into DAW, but never the other way around without the outputs from the DAW routing into inputs L/R. Thanks for the video, it was really useful! :D
@Davemech
2 жыл бұрын
Hi thanks for watching! Yes it's pretty easy actually :). On the DT go to sampling page and choose USB L/R as your input source. Just make sure you use DT as your audio interface. You can also use DT in its USB audio/midi setting so without using overbridge. You can sample anything from your computer this way, like KZitem. Cheers!

Thanks Micro! No for kicks I do not. I need the lows and sub for a kick to work :). But if you can make the kick a tiny bit better with some subtle eqing before importing, that's of course a good idea :)

Hi Dave, I just found out about Settings>System>View Plus Drive. I am a little confused by the information on the screen. The cylindrical graphic reads 5% for both Ram & Plus Drive. Directly under that graphic it says I have ~65 mbs ram/~985 mbs plus drive free space. I’m a little confused as a result of how the information appears - have I only used 5% of the memory or is that how much space I have available? Sorry for the long question!

what about combining sample chains with the old trick of pitching a sample up to save space and then stretching it back out in the box?
@Davemech
5 жыл бұрын
That's a neat trick indeed, but you will lose some of the original high frequency information when pitching it back down. It also lowers the functional range of the tune within DT as you can only go 24 semi tones up and down. So that's the reason why I don't use that trick.

Amazing.. As usual! Thanks a lot for these uploads. But you make me cry again, I'm starting to miss this little black box a lot.. I have a question about the monitoring of your tracks. How do you make these clean sub without too many distortion? That's a big deal that made me sold mine. I found that the Digitakt cut some of the low frequencies of my samples so the result was not punchy as I expected. I've tried many things like boosting bass with the LPF or messing with the compressor but I've never found a perfect solution. I didn't found how to make the mix dynamic, deep and clean. I think that's the reason you run two DT? What is your secret Dave? (If you want to reveal it haha :D) Since, I've bought a TR-8S from Roland and I find that it sound muuuuch better, with the same samples (mono, too). More dynamic, more deepness and much more bass, without any kind of distortion. I think there is no comparisons between the quality of the dry output, but when I see all you're vids and the way you make the Digitakt sound, I'm a bit starting to regret my decision ! :P The TR-8S is cool but hey! there's nothing better than messing with Digitakt's features. Hope you'll be able to read me, I'm french so I may do some mistakes.

Certainly just send kick to reverb, use LP on reverb page to remove the highs, set HP to something low. There ya go :D of course the reverb is no unusable for anything else. I prefer to create rumble with sampling techniques. You could set the reverb decay to something long throw one kick through it then resample the tail and us that rumble sample on either the kick track in between kicks or on its own track. Hope this helps. Cheers!
