Awesome A🌷《☆》Well done dear👍As a Jacksonville native Skynyrd is dear to my heart. There's another part that Gary plays on his Les Paul that mimics a Steel guitar sound but it's not as noticeable. When Ed heard Gary playing that riff is what inspired him to come up with the main riff. Allen of course was playing the Bar chords in adding another layer of sound🖖😎☮

Ayla is a gifted guitar player who teaches to any level without making it about her own ability to command a song. So many teachers, even in "beginner" lessons cannot keep themselves from showing off. A teacher needs to check his or her ego at the door. I find that female teacher/players are much better at recognizing this and implementing their lessons with this in mind. Her delivery is clear, concise, and without any trace of condescension. Great job, Ayla!

This style of lesson definitely works, and for someone down at the lower levels, here are several reasons why: Even your lowest levels still give the feel of the song, many beginner interpretations don't. We can see what it would take to move up to the next level and can practice those skills. We can also see what it might take to get to our eventual goal of playing a song like the original and can make the determination of how much work it would take to get closer to that if we want to go that far. Or we can decide if there's a sweet spot lower down, that we'd still be happy playing. I vote for more of these.

I totally agree with Surgeon. There's NO way to bite off this song in one chew (at least for someone at my level). Sneaking up on it helps me understand the song, not get frustrated, let me build my skills into it, and ... it's just great.

If you are at level 1, just play that level along with the record and stay in time. Then start learning the next level until you can play in time to record. then move up. Don't try to skip ahead and expect it to be easy. Pinch harmonic. Choke up on the pick, hold it a bit more firmly, somewhat more angular to sting helps too. Pick the note so that immediately after the pick connects with the string the skin of your thumb / finger glances the string. That ever so slight touch will kill the fundamental tone and let the high frequencies ring out. It helps to have some gain on your amp or hotter pickups. If you can get a quiet room you can do it unplugged. When you get it right you will hear high pitched whistling tone as opposed to the normal note. Think LaGrange solo, many songs by Roy Buchanan. It's the same thing as tuning your guitar with harmonics except the pinch harmonic is more aggressive in nature. Not simply touching a string, it's like you are dual picking ... pick and skin. The pick delivers the energy the skin kills the fundamental tone immediately, the result is a strong whistling note. Gain, distortion, compression all help but it's a technique. It's just harder to hear and fades quickly when things are clean and quiet.

This is the best Sweet Home lesson that I've seen on YT. I like how you include the tablature under your fret board hand and slowly go over the fingering. That really helps. I've booked marked this video for future study. Thank you for this very good lesson, Ayla. 👏👏👏

Great lesson. Thought I was at level 5 but had drifted away from the exact licks a little. This brought me back nicely and quickly. The Skynyrd guys always said that the reason bar bands covering their songs often sound off/wrong is they don’t get the licks the way they are on the records. It really is all in the details. I still marvel at how perfect Ed King’s signature licks were for this song when he recorded them ..48 years ago-wow. And the irony that the licks and solos in an iconic Southern rock song …were composed and played by a guitarist from Glendale, CA (LA) who didn’t care for Stratocasters much and only played one because the other LS guys played Gibsons

"Sweet Home Alabama" was written in answer to two songs by Neil Young, "Southern Man" and "Alabama", because the songs "took the entire South to task for the bloody history of slavery and its aftermath." "We thought Neil was shooting all the ducks in order to kill one or two," said Ronnie Van Zant at the time. The lyrics to "Sweet Home Alabama" include the following lines: Well, I heard Mister Young sing about her Well, I heard ol' Neil put her down Well, I hope Neil Young will remember A Southern man don't need him around anyhow

I love your '5 Level' concept. Because you very accurately break down the complexity of the song(s), and then ramp it up in intervals - in the same way most people learn when listening to others playing. At first just the rough shape of it - then building it up. It's very intuitive and at the same time teaching us the finer details with every step up. You're a gift to the scene.

I'm a long time Skynyrd fan and I've been playing this song for more than 40 years. This is the most technically accurate explanation of how the song really should be played. I can't tell you how many times I've butted heads-with people who think they're playing it right but never took the time to really listen to the different fills and the other subtle nuances of the song. Some people fake it with a single fill that is some weird amalgamation of notes that sort of sound like the original fills -- but that's the only fill they use. The best poor-man's way to hear the subtle differences (without reading the sheet music) is to listen to the original studio version with headphones and adjust the sound settings (equalizer) so there's practically no bass tones. it's the closest you can come to track/layer isolation (sort of) without the original raw recordings, but you can definitely hear the difference -- and it doesn't take too long to realize the fills are all different. Thank you SO much for showing the absolutely correct way to play these fills -- it will even help me say "I told you so" to the people who play it wrong :) -- except Gary Rossington. He can play it whatever way he wants...lol.
