Brilliant solution! Looking forward to seeing how this can be scaled!

Wonderful and concise presentation about a promising tech! I would like to inquire about the energy density (Wh/kg & Wh/L) of such a system. Also, I would like to ask if there are still some technological issues to be solved to commercialize this technology. Ultimately, how soon could this hit the markets? Thank you in advance!

The energy density is about 200-400 kWh/m3. Depending upon what temperatures you cycle it through. All aspects of the technology have been demonstrated. We’re working now to demonstrate them fully integrated and to being scaling them up. I recently started a company pursuing commercialization and you could see a thermal battery available in 3 years (2025).

@@AsegunHenry How does it compare to sand energy storage that a group of young entrepreneurs did several years ago?

@@ff-ti7nj - it should be similarly low cost, but higher efficiency and longer life.

Because, depending upon the temperatures you use it, sand can/will sinter.

Very interesting presentation. You mentioned in the video that utilizing a turbine to convert the heat back to electricity would be too slow but mention why. Can you please elaborate on that a bit?
@AsegunHenry

Converting back to electricity is a viable approach in general, but it would require the creation of a new type of turbine that currently doesn’t exist. Doing so is likely to require a > $100M investment and 5+ years of R&D.

Dr. Henry: I love this idea! What a wonderful presentation and idea. Is this more efficient than free steam from 800-1000 meters that can power a steam plant without energy expense? I am not challenging you, but if the steam is renewable and free, then is the less efficient turbine effective? I would like to try your technology in the Midwest with a 1-3 Megawatt plant. Let me know if you can discuss this with me. Best, Max

Although the energy itself is technically free, the equipment needed to capture it is not. So whenever we think about the cost of renewable technologies, we’re assuming the energy is free and what we’re comparing is the cost of all the equipment and infrastructure needed to capture and deliver it. So in short, yes, our approach, with solar PV or wind, is less expensive than concentrated solar power with steam or molten salt.

Nice video, very interesting. Was magneto hydrodynamic a possible means of pumping the liquid metal? If so what are pros and cons of one versus the other (ceramic/graphite pump)? Could an alloy less inclined to freeze have been used? Or maybe freezing of the tin is not a major issue.
@AsegunHenry

It’s possible but extremely inefficient. Most of the energy you put in, just becomes wasted heat. Only a few percent ends up pumping the liquid. Nonetheless, there’s no need since we have mechanical pumps that work just fine.
