I always love when your 'are you an artist that makes retro or synth pop' video ad pops up on instagram !

This is a great video! The most important rule is… there are no rules. There’s no one size fits all setting, plugin or whatever. And the gain staging hype got ridiculous.

Absolutely! I think guidelines can be really helpful, especially when you're starting out, but it's easy to get locked into thinking "you must ALWAYS do x, y or z" and it's good to check in with that way of thinking

I think the "don't mix as you go" rule is really trying to say that the song at its core should be good, and that you should focus on that before you care about the mix. There is some validity to that, and I think it is important to keep that in mind, but with things like electronic music, the identity of the song is largely defined by the sound design. That applies to stuff like fx on guitars and such, and when you're trying to make an effect sound good, its almost impossible to not mix along the way. Not mixing as you go only really applies to recording live music, and even there, dialing in the tone of your guitar and placing your mics is really a form of mixing

really great video. Alot of newbies should come back to this video after some time with new context and experience and will learn more.

These are great advice and I love that you give context for how/why you break them. I can certainly think of examples that agree and disagree with these. Bass in mono is probably the most harmful to new producers of these rules. Though I have seen new producers hard pan basses/sub elements. Gain staging although overly retentive is super helpful for helping new producers hear compression is doing easier and not be tricked by volume. Though the way your doing it does sound very informed and considered. I feel like these rule breaks could be better shown with examples for and against although doing that efficiently in a short you tube video would be hard. Great video.

Thanks for your kind comment! I 100% agree that for a lot of these rules there's some good sense in there for when you're starting out, but when you're further along in your mixing journey it's always good to come back and ask yourself why you're doing this stuff, and if it still has a place in your process. I would have loved to have been able to give examples, but you're totally right the video would have been so long, and I don't have too much time around my mixing/production work to put these videos together!

bass being mono matters most for records

Yes you're absolutely correct, too much stereo information in the very low end can literally cause the needle to skip or even jump out of the groove, but the vinyl mastering process should take care of that. Plenty of old records were released with bassy elements that were hard panned, but the vinyl pressings were definitely playable!

For me, it's using quite heavy compression on the mix buss, it sounds a lot smoother to me, and I do it. I'd rather use more compression and less limiting.

@@Peaceful_Days You can definitely get away with a lot of mix bus compression if you work it right, though some mastering engineers might not be comfortable working with tracks mixed this way. You've just gotta find one who is!
