I'll be one year loc'd in July and have been so discouraged because my locs don't "look a certain way," I can't tell if they're growing, etc. but I'm trying to be patient and trust the process. This video is encouraging.

Amen! I hear that from people often but I've really been inspired by seeing other loc'd ladies and gents fault their different locs. It's so beautiful to see how different we are.

My question to y’all is what’s a certain way? Are you wanting them to look like someone who is far deeper into the journey than you? Has a totally different hair type/starting length/starting method or maintenance than you? We gotta give ourselves some slack and be reasonable, you know? The beauty in locs, even when they’re looking their ‘roughest’😅, is how perfectly unique each one is. Some days they’re a bit temperamental, like little kids, but they ARE baby locs, then teenagers…what do we expect? Gotta embrace them and let them find their way, and just KNOW you’re the 💩 no matter what your hair is up to. Affirm that ish Don’t give up y’all, you’ll get to the point where a newbie is looking at yours like absolute 🤩 goals (if they’re not already, cuz…they probably are) 😉

@@ninabeena83 I only say a certain way because I've never liked my hair as a loose natural and really only loc'd it because I was so frustrated with it. (Not including the fact that my younger sister has been loc'd for 10 years and I like her locs, and other aspects that could also count as motivation). I knew of the journey loc'ing my hair would entail but at that point there wasn't a level of frustration I could reach that I haven't already, so I finally just did it. Specifically, I say "a certain way" because since loc'ing, I've been seeing more & more people document their loc journeys, and I've felt that from the start they "look better" than mine. I of course take into account the fact that, at least for all the ones I've seen so far, these women started with length, density, and thickness that I didn't & have never had as a loose natural; their hair grows quicker than mine and their genetics are overall just different from mine. I understand circumstances like this that play into one's hair. I've been on this starter loc journey a lot longer than a lot of the journeys I've seen and because of how different everybody's hair is and how different people's locs mature, you would think theirs were older than mine. But that just is what it is. I definitely agree with everything you said, I just have personally always struggled with my hair--never liking how it looks & how I look/feel when it isn't styled in a way and at a length I prefer--so that's why whenever I open up about my hair in comparison to other people's, I say things like "better" or "a certain way." I know all about how everybody's hair is different, how you should love your own hair at whatever stage, how important mindset is because what's "the right way" for hair to look anyway, etc. but just because I've heard this doesn't mean it's not something I will still deal or struggle with (not that that's what you're implying, I just mean in general). Sometimes it's discouraging to see how people's loc journeys are working out for them, but other times it's easier for me to show & accept grace for myself in remembering truths about this process like the one's you've shared in your comment, and what Joy Navon mentioned. :]

Your locs look great! I am a little over 4 months and loving my journey! As for color, I thought and I've been told that you should wait until at least a year before you color. I'm new at it and don't want to damage it so I will wait.

@@JoyNavon … I totally agree, but I would need enough time to practice styling it and feel comfortable with wearing the style in one wedding and attending the other, if that makes sense?

The locs at 9:15 are sealing up - that little shepherds hook on the first one, the loop on the second. That’s why the third one you picked up looks like that, it’s already gone through that process. If you want actual curly ends, you might want to start combing those first two out specifically before they loc. i decided against the curly ends and let mine do their thing (I’m about 2y4m in) because my ends already grab onto and tangle on things 😅

Hi Joy🥺 Also just started my loc journey 5 months ago. I've been checking your videos out, and I absolutely enjoy them. I just wanted to know how do you deal or how did you deal with the budding stage and the frizz? I'm also stressed cause Sis needs length😭😭 Love ❤️
