One of my best friends started laughing his ass off because this one guy I was facing got pissed off when I merlin'd during the battle phase to swing for game, one guy came over and was like "can he do that?" and this guy actually yelled: "I DON'T KNOW NOBODY RUNS THIS GARBAGE" and I'm just sitting there like "oh.... but... I like Noble Knights..." I ended up disqualified from that match for an illegal move even though I'm 93% positive that I was able to do that, I just didn't wanna make a fuss since the dude looked ready to smash me over the head with the table so I just went with it.

@@maybe752most of the time surrendering is not "being a good looser", you're just likely frustrated (especially if you do it regularly, where it's likely you're not being a happy guy surrendering) and your opponent recognizes that so you just spread negative energy and remove the fun of the finish. It's just interrupting the happening game, going away and letting the win to your opponent with it .

@JEL625
8 жыл бұрын
+Jett Connor It's a term that is synonymous with tier 0 in my eyes, only to be used on the most meta-defining and over-powered decks. In more simple terms it is when a top tier deck's biggest competition was itself and not the other decks of that format. In this sense i could call a deck "cancer" because it multiplies throughout that format like a cancer. To konami's credit these are the exception rather than the rule and I can't remember a format since E.dragons where there hasn't been at least 3 decks competing for the top seed.

I personally hate the term "tier 0" when applied to just any deck that happens to be topping a lot. Honestly I feel "tier 0" only somewhat deserves application to formats when you pretty much had to play a certain deck (ie: Tele-DAD or Prime Dragon Ruler) or you wouldn't be able to win, because everything else far outpaced it.

The "official" tier list is based on results. Therefore there is always a tier 0 deck. That deck is the deck that has more results than all other decks. It's only by comparison. It's like, burning abyss this format. Unquestionably the best deck. So it's this formats tier 0.

IN the defense of people who use the word "unhealthy," I think that it's actually accurate. I only use it when I played other games and see why doing it differently is a bad thing. Actually, this applies for broken as well. Mainly those two should probably be more "overused" yugioh terms. as I've said many times; I quit yugioh because the game is in such a state that I can't stand. I like playing games where you don't have to play it a very specific way. This usually means that some strategies will be inherently countered by others. Take, for instance, you have a deck that puts pressure on naturally as the game goes on, and you have an early-game rush deck. The steady pressure deck will have trouble against a rush, inherently. However, early rush decks are susceptible to decks that are really defensive; if their rush doesn't kill, they should become mostly worthless, or slightly less powerful in the later stages of the game than others. This is cyclical balance, and it's why I like Vanguard. Some decks decline and come into their own naturally as time goes on. New mechanics sometimes make decks lose power, while it provides a much-needed boost to others that may have been less relevant before the new mechanic. Basically, when you play Vanguard, you pick a deck that comes with inherent risks, that you must be aware of if you are to succeed.

yeah i feel like you nailed this one on the head. a lot these words fall under the justification aspect for people who want to hate on someone for playing a certain deck, and labeling a deck "helmet" is an excuse to why you lost. also it makes the players lazy when they just say "oh i cant beat it its helmet of course they won" instead of actually thinking to themselves "that deck isnt a good match up for mine, but HOW can i play around it and beat it. I can beat qli's with synchrons because i actually took the time to ask myself, "okay how can I improve my strategy to get over tower or ruin their scales". but a majority or people just want to write it off as a unbeatable deck so they can get over their lose and avoid actually thinking creatively

The term "Broken" really pisses me off. Unless you played in the Yata Lock format and went against that or Magical Scientist (or Cyber Stein) FTK/OTK. You don't know what the term means. For a card to be "broken" it must break the entire game and always creates an (Sorry hate to say this) unhealthy game state. Where in the Yata Lock a person would have Sangan/Witch of the Black Forest on field they a person plays Chaos Emperor Dragon Envoy of the End getting rid of everything triggering either Sangan or Witch of the Black Forest searching for Yata Garasu then attacking forcing the opponent to not be able to draw either forcing them to pass their turn. That is an unhealthy game state and isn't good for the game. And considering it wasn't that hard to create that kind of gamestate with a proper deck and able to do it consistently that is when a card or a deck will break the game.

when it comes to the skillful term. they way most people describe it,it's what I would call a reactionary or toolbox deck that has lots of different combos for different situations. To me I do think some decks require more skill to master than others. like abc's it's a fairly easy deck to start off with because for the most part the goal is turn one dragon and sit. while a deck like synchrons may not be as easy to start with they have so many different combos. neither one is better or worse just different

My opinion on the term "broken" For a card to be "broken". It must meet 3 conditions: 1) That monster (if it's a monster) has infinite ATK/DEF. (Only Divine Serpent from the anime meets this requirement) 2) That card is immune to other card effects (especially if it's immune to opponent's card effects) and can activate effects with a built-in effect that prevents other cards from responding to it (even Counter Trap cards) 3) That card has a built-in floodgate effect that prevents your opponent from doing ANYTHING. (Mistake + The Last Warrior from Another Planet + Denko Sekka + Number S0: Hope ZEXAL in 1 card)

Revisiting this video, I think I'd like to point out that there's quite a bit of fun in constructing a deck around a degenerate strategy such as trying to draw through your deck. It's like building a little machine that's designed to have the highest chance of getting a high number of draws, increasing your chances of pulling of x. I know it's not fun to play against but they are really interesting to build.
@hichigoshirosaki3334

I feel ya. The word broken is thrown around in a lot of other communities and in the general populace as well. I kinda use it sometimes or agree when someone uses it. I am pretty salty about the balance of the things I get involved with. I can understand. In reality though I should probably get good. However, you might have a different opinion when you look at it from another view. There are workarounds for everything, but when something requires a certain counter that you're not necessarily prepared for or not able to deal with, you can find yourself taking the results with a grain of salt too. When faced with insurmountable odds, I tend to be displeased personally. In Yu-Gi-Oh, I can also understand it being less relevant though.

The only thing i've really heard aside from skillful is broken and those cards are pretty much all banned except ones for the unpopular decks of course. Like for instance, spellbook of judgement can only be used with spellbooks and b/c it's a popular deck it was banned b/c you can get like plus 10 in one turn and the deck recycles. So yeah, it's extremely broken.

degenerate doesn't only mean regressed. It can simply mean something is not normal to the point where it 'not being normal' is unhealthy or it leads to slippery slope. And that terms is actually pretty true for a lot of card games because power creep isn't healthy all the time. It does set degenerative precedent. EDIT: Unhealthy is the next term. You might hate it but the banlist exists. Someone at Komoney thinks the card(s) is unhealthy for the game so they limit usage if not out right bans it. So....yeah

Have to agree with "broken". I play with older cards typically due to Yu.Gi.Oh mainly being a past time for me. So in the matches I typically play high caliber cards are going to be things like Egyptian God Cards, Exodia, Quintet Magician, 5 Headed Dragon. Maybe Cyber Dragon/E Hero fusions. (With the proper spell and trap support). Which at one time many of the cards I listed would have been considered to be broken. Like an Exodia Burn Deck with cards like Wall of Illusion, Witch of the Black Forest, Emissary of the Afterlife, etc would have been considered heavily broken against any deck that predates like a Pyramid of Light Deck, or Blue Eyes Shining Dragon themed decks. But if I tried to pit that same Exodia deck against anything modern on a Master Rule 4 playing field I'm gonna get shit on.

Most of these terms are ways to describe a card that either changes the meta in a drastic way, or box out previously meta cards. I.E power creep. I don't think it's anyones surprise that players don't like power creep. A previously strong deck no longer being strong sucks. So people often complain about cards they view as power creeping. Now I also feel it's important to realize that yugioh IS BROKEN. The amount of plays archetypes can make is crazy. Fluffals ARE broken, they're just not as broken as the top tier archetypes. While some might argue this doesn't make it broken, one has to realize the frame of reference players have. If you compare Fluffals to the current meta? No they're not broken, if you compare them to most meta's in the past, yes undoubtedly they're broken. If you think someone claiming your card is broken or unhealthy is elitist, it is not the term's fault for it, it's either the user or your own.

Degenerate generally means "this is what is wrong with Yu-Gi-Oh!". Decks that either completely shut down the opponent and make them unable to play the game (Naturia Beast, Cyber Dragon Infinity, Scale Ariadne/Luster Pendulum and Set Ultimate Providence. Pass.) or go +5 or more literally every turn (Exodia, practically any Pendulum deck, Nekroz, Shaddoll). They make the game go backwards because it creates this "how the hell do you beat this nonsense without doing it yourself?" mindset. That's my biggest problem with the game right now - every deck is either PePe, Pendulum Magicians, Exodia, or "I can play the game and you can't", and using the FUN archetypes like Gusto, Ice Barrier, Trap Monster, and even some of the older pseudo-meta like Yosenju and Fire Fist fall into this area now. Let me put it this way, though. Degenerate = Inzektor/Wind-Up/Chaos Dragon format looks balanced in hindsight.

i thought helmet meant that your deck has alot of protection not always through traps but more often with monster effects and support. almost like being protected by a helmet. just like you said in the video decks like gusto and bujins are helmet because its really hard to get around or over then with all their protection. i wouldn't count things like qliphorts or satellar knights as helmet decks because they usually are either aggressive or more control based then jsut defencive

I hated it when people purposely gave the cards names they never had back when I played the game. Like "Deikochi" and with this "Deiko". And they did not stop. Even when you flat out said "Dekoichi" they did not stop. Ohr pronounced "Jar" like "Chair" or "Luster" as "Lester". I mean some of the pronunciations were obviously because they could not speak proper English but in case of names like Dekoichi it simply is a name they did have no idea of.

I know I'm months late about this, but I use the term degenerate only to describe things that are being promoted that used to be considered necessary to limit. Like Konami reached back and is trying to take things they deemed bad and make them seem nessecary to win. For example, if Dragon Rulers were so bannable for being able to make overextension plays every turn, why make a mechanic that does just that and keep the Dragon Ruler model banned?

I agree with what you said about the term broken. My argument is the that special summoning as a whole is broken. im not an expert but i think in my humble opinion that FTK's , unrestricted loops and tactics that extend the acceptable level of unfair you see at the competitive level are in fact unhealthy and degenerate because more often than not 1 player is actively removing the two player element of a two player game, outside of that i think anything is pretty much okay, some cards are very strong and that needs to be the case of the game stops progressing, stops profiting and we lose out beloved children's card game.

To be fair cards like Monkeyboard, Kozmo Dark Destroyer, Monarch pantheism, Chicken Game are all very unhealthy Wavering eyes is fine I guess. Most cards nowadays are way too protected for example Dark destroyer, Magnus, and ultimate falcon are all relatively easy to summon and have ultimate protection where as a card like Quasar who used to be the most game breaking card when it touched the board, even then had one way of stopping cards. The former cards just flat out are very difficult get rid of though Magnus is the only card that deserves his immunities and effects but Ultimate falcon shouldn't have it. Dark destroyer doesn't have it but it floats like hell

I completely agree with "broken" and "skillful". I do not understand the phrase power creep and assume it refers to the ease of FTK being made all to easy. I will say that having only burning abyss in a deck would be one hell of a handy cap to give an opponent. ?Every time I hear praise for them I mentally list the 5+ cards that easily place a non burning abyss creature on their field (Black Garden anyone). when stuff as stupid as creature swap and creature seizure block your plays or hell the extra deck it self trumps your own deck I do not see where they are worth the ink they are printed with.

When people say 'degenerate', they usually mean that a deck, or play, ect. Is taking yugioh into a bad direction. For example with chicken race ftk, people don't like ftk formats, they're not fun, so they say chicken race is degenerate for yugioh

I hate when people call archetypes 'decks'. This implies that there's only the one 40-60 card combination of cards and anything else is wrong. It also enforces and encourages net decking. A deck is any combination of 40-60 cards. I especially hate when people say "All the deck does" or "The deck runs (insert card(s) here)". Decks don't run. Players run cards in their decks.

Lion Day Again, I would argue that decks don't run cards. Players run cards in their decks. But yeah I understand the sentiment that if a player is using a certain archetype, especially in the competitive scene, that they're more likely to play a certain card or a certain way that is easier to predict.

Complaining about helmet/linear decks is something that shows you aren't a good Yugioh player. I mean, if you know what the deck is trying to but you can't stop it, what does that say about how good a player you are?

I'm of the belief that djinn releaser became unhealthy and degenerate upon the release of Nekroz of trishula. The Djinn itself prevented you from mounting an effective monster field, and if you cleared it, you still leave yourself open to a follow up Nekroz of trishula. Prior to Trishula's releast Djinnn was strong, yes, but it was balanced by it's lack of consistency, and the fact that most ritual decks could not protect the djinn'd mosnter except by using other Djinn's and even then you werre nto normally left exposed to a follow up play that could punish you harder, and then die to the fact that you didn't commit hard enough.

when people say "degenerate" in terms of yugioh, they mean a strategy or card that boils the game down to a single purpose. for example, chicken game was considered degenerate because it boiled the game around the card, not the full game and all its strategies. I'd say card of demise is also degenerate because it generates a ton of advantage and racing to your demises is also a degenerate strategy.
@DARKGORZ

I don't think unhealthy, broken, or degenerate are bad terms in the game so much. Though, they all somewhat pointless since they are about a single theme about cards and interaction between cards that ruin the spirit of the game for a player.Me personally love the old battle for dominance interaction yugioh used to have. Where as today's yugioh kinda skip the battle part and jumps straight into summoning powerful fields. These fields don't feel earned to me, though that is my opinion and there are plenty of people who enjoy this style. Skillful probably an older term that was used when you compare them to autopilot deck. Which is probably the old term for helmet deck? Not sure, if that is right since there is no concrete definition of a helmet deck.

I always thought a helmet deck is where you have 1 monster on board and just keep it on board by protecting it. Bujin and Evilswarm were the premier helmet decks back in the day.

All of the terms you hate are basically the same thing. There isn't a 'helmet deck' in the game that isn't 'degenerate' or 'unhealthy' for the game. All helmet decks are considered 'broken' for their time. Just because it annoys you doesn't mean there isn't truth to all of these terms. The terms definitely aren't always used correctly but a deck completely built around 6+ floodgates is objectively a helmet deck. Decks that search a lot on their own are okay but something like Qli which only has one optimal search at any given time take no skill to play. I was actually pretty excited when Turbo Towers became a thing because suddenly Qli's weren't 100% about Stealth spamming under Skill Drain and Lose 1 Turn. Old Necloth was definitely unhealthy, everyone said it and Konami agreed. I actually have a lot of respect for good Necloth players now because it takes a great deal of knowledge and execution to play the deck with 1 Shurit. Whining isn't very constructive on its own but it's usually a pretty good indicator. Players playing semi-casual decks at locals don't want to get stomped by Triverr/Fiendish Chain spamming. Sadly all meta decks have some form of easily-accessed, general negation built into the archetype and that just doesn't make for fun games. Imagine if one of the bad guys in the anime had a deck built around triple Vanity's, triple Skill Drain Qli or Burning Abyss. What exciting episodes those would make for.

Huh, I never really thought about this topic. This was an interesting video. On the topic of "skillful," I think the more appropriate term would be "tactical." For example, Shaddolls have a lot of tricky effects and combos, but they have restrictions, too. So it comes down to knowing when the best time is to make a certain move. But using a tactical deck doesn't make you any better than someone using a "helmet" deck imo. It's just a matter of what playstyle you prefer.

I see the issue with unhealthy as a term. What makes that person so special that their opinion on how the game should be played is the "right" way? In the end, it's Konami's game, and however they want the game to be played is how it will be. Fun is a relative term, so just because something makes the game "not fun" to one person, doesn't mean it won't make the game more fun for another.
@WIZA327

+WIZA327 In my personal opinion though, Pendulums are "unhealthy" for the game. I'm sure many have had lots of fun playing with Pendulums, but for the way I like to play the game, it has really made the game super toxic and frustrating to play for me. Unhealthy is only my opinion of the mechanic though as I've said.

Calling a deck skillful is also like stupidly vague because I can call myself really good at U.A. but decent at Nekroz which are both decks I've played quite a lot but I'd use U.A over Nekroz any day because I know the weaknesses of Nekorz and I know a lot of people can simply exploid them and tbh U.A. is considered a Helmet deck by a lot of people but it took me 3 months to build it well enough to actually beat meta I'm actually thinking about throwinng in a couple of banishers of the light and stuff since I dont really care if something goes banished on my graveyard I wont be able to use it in the entire duel unlike Shadoll, burning, Nekroz,, sometimes Infernoids and stuff like that brake their grave and you brake them (Imperial as a side since it hurts infernoids much more than macro) just do what you like and enjoy what you enjoy and just play the game man come on

"Helmet" deck is accurate. They're solitaire decks designed to completely trash the older archetypes (which usually aren't updated for the current state of the game, go figure). As for insulting the "helmet" decks players, why do you think they're not insulting us by playing shit like Trickstars which can be beaten, yes, but not unless you have a specific deck (that you may not play) or the same deck and go first? There are some of us that treasure and respect our personal decks, invest a lot of money, time and effort into it and here comes the rich asshole that bought the latest bullshit deck (designed to make him win no matter how bad of a player he is because that deck just removes everything from the opponent's field and allows the player to do a million special summons per turn and inflict burn damage to the opponent while doing all this, plus the opponent gets burned for simply playing the game... for example you take 2000+ burn damage just for your draw). Also FTK decks SHOULDN'T EXIST in the game. It makes it unbalanced. This is NOT a single player game so when you give too much power to specific players and completely crap on others, it makes the game NOT FUN! And YES! The game IS BROKEN! The game used to be about skill. Nowadays however... Nowadays you just buy the recent bullshit deck and you basically have an "I want to win" button. What's sad is that they turned Duel Links into the same broken mess that the TCG is and it was supposed to be the not bullshit one.
