It would generally have to be more advanced (especially if they came to us) due to the fact that we can barely make it off earth. If they can fly to other solar systems or even galaxies their tech would be thousands of years more advanced than ours. It's also due to the fact that if they can emit a signal great enough for our primitive tech to find, that is already a sign of advanced technology. Generally for life there is a ratio of 1: half a billion. 1 being intelligent life. Half a billion being no life to microbial or non intelligent life

Yes, I believe there is alien life out there of some kind. The likelihood that there is life I think is fairly likely in my opinion, but the possibility of intelligent life is far more uncommon. The time needed for life to get to the advanced stage we have gotten to would mean that life would have need to have started early and with little interference from outer space, such as asteroid impacts, a stable star, etc. I have no doubt that there is both life, intelligent or otherwise. Let us not forget that if a planet has life that isn't intelligent, that doesn't mean that it is necessarily microbial in nature. Whales, dolphins, primates, cats, dogs, spiders, etc. are all complex life forms, but can't communicate with other species, much less other planets. So there may be a great deal of life, even complex life, on other planets without species that have the ability of interstellar communications.

The reason we haven't found it yet because if space were shrunk down to the size of the oceans on earth, the amount that we have observed is the size of a cup. There are a lot of places to look, and even more places that we dont know it exists.

Grognak the Barbarian No i do know exactly the point here. But the theories do not provide any solid evidence as there is or they will discover anything with these theories. Most of these theories require us to have an advanced level to engineering or scientific ability to be able to look let alone attempt to find such a thing.

Why wouldn't there be intelligent life elsewhere ? We found threre are fossilized microbes on Mars and liquid oceans on planets in the closest solar system. Considering the size of the universe, it's mathematicly impossible that intelligent life dosen't exist elsewhere, and highly probable that civilizations far more advanced than us exist out there. I don't get how some humans are so full of themselves they think they are at the top of the universal evolutionary ladder. We still flung our shits at each other one million years ago and killed each other with pointed sticks five hundred years ago. I think a universe with 100 billion galaxies can produce better than that...

Arthur C. Clarke said: "There are two distinct possibilities...either we are alone in the universe or we're not...both are equally terrifying." Fermi's paradox is undeniable. We should see life everywhere we look but not only can we not detect life elsewhere in the universe, but we can only detect a single genesis for life on our own planet where logic dictates there should be multiple "trees of life". Even after mass extinction events cleared niches for a second genesis to occur it did not. The single genesis simply restructered itself to fill the gaps. It seems the more science tries to disprove intelligent design or creator of some sort, the more it comes up empty which only adds credence to the ideology that we are somehow special. That we were created by someone or something on purpose and with purpose. Finding life somewhere else or finding a second genesis here on earth would be the single biggest piece to the puzzle of us. If it's out there, then life and the universe most likely started randomly as mainstream science suggests but if it's not out there then we MUST be special and MUST have been created. But then who created the creator? The answers to life and its origins will only beget more questions. I take solace in knowing that as these discoveries are made you will be there with new Top5s to get me thinking on the next new mysteries. Thanks for the brain food!

Hope I'm not late to the party! I always love a good KZitem comment discussion on interesting topics. Anyhow... first off I am going to disagree that mathematically there should be at the very least someone out there by sheer odds alone. If you want me to I can write a proof in set notation to prove that this is not the case. It is mathematically impossible to infer statistical probabilities from just 1 data point. Our tree of life being that single data point. Also, it may be possible that other trees starting even here on earth, after large extinction events cleared established niches. The issue is that a new genesis doesn't just have to exist and reproduce, it has to evolve and undergo natural selection so that it can evolve better and faster. The pprocessor natural selection may be the answer to that question, as from a mathematical perspective there is a most efficient way to undergo evolution via natural selection that has to do with things like mutation rate, epigenetics, and resesive/dominated traits. In essence, a genesis has to theoretically evolve the ability to evolve, and via natural selection that ability can be refined. Thus our already established tree of life possibly evolved to the new niches faster because it already found the more efficient modes of evolution to increase diversity and allow for rapid evolution via natural selection, even if it showed up late to the niche. This would allow it to out compete the younger genesis competion... like a gamer with all the cheat codes. Second I'd also like to dispute that if we are talking about a creator of the type that creates the entire universe and not just some alien species that gifts life to earth, then said creator does not need a creator of its own. Concepts like create and destroy are side affect perceptions to linear existence. It's pretty well astablished (although I'm one to believe nothing is 100% certain) that both space and time were created at the beginning of our universe. To apply concepts that relie on the passage of time, such as creation/beginning to a creator of our universe is like a computer trying to apply the concept of logic gates, binary arithmetic, and electricity to describe its creator, a biological entity called a human who specializes in ASIC engineering... it can only get so far before the limits of it's own existance impeed its ability to understand its creator, let alone the universe/society its creator exists in. Anyways, hope you dont see this as personal attack, it's not! I just love discussing things, rebuttals and logical proofs to challenge or disprove my counter statements are not just welcomed but also looked forward too! As I dont spend all this time writing this crap just so someone can say "your right I'm wrong, moving on" that's boring. Engaging intellectual conversation are my online addiction ;)

@@tylerreeves895 sorry, I have all notifications off except likes (not sure how to turn that one off.) Someone liked another comment I made on this vid and here I am so... I would love to see an equation that counters Fermi's Paradox and Drakes equation. So yeah, if it's not a mile long, let's see the math (with annotations for any variables, please). And I think maybe you could look at the paradox a different way. It's not so much that life *should be* everywhere but the *possibility* for life *is* everywhere. Earth-like and water rich bodies have been found numerous times. Organics and compounds that could potentially be waste byproduct of chemical synthesis have been found. So to me the *possibility* for life is out there. But the life itself doesn't seem to be. You mentioned, as had I in the original comment, that life tends to fill niches. And you spoke of natural selection like someone familiar with the works of Charles Darwin, so you must know that every niche life can fill it does. Every place on Earth where life *can* exist, life *does* exist. And what's more, places where we thought life couldn't possibly exist we find it in abundance (caves that drip battery acid from the ceiling and walls, sulfuric hot springs, the desert wastes of Antarctica, and thermal vents at the bottom of the deepest parts of the ocean). Life fills all niches like water pouring onto grooved surface. And the universe contains niches everywhere, especially if we consider the possibility that life's propensity to find ways to exist despite the odds may be limited by our earthy constraints. Or more simply, if life can evlove to exist in conditions that would be death for other lifeforms here on Earth, perhaps extremophiles can be even more extreme if the niches elsewhere in the universe are more extreme than can be found on Earth. Our concept of life shouldn't be tethered to how life is on Earth. I believe life can exceed the terrestrial bounds of possible niches to fill even more than we thought could exist. Eliminate the impossible and whatever is left, however improbable, must be right (Einstein). Life should be everywhere and since it's not we must then consider that we are special and designed with purpose, otherwise why all this? ::gestures at everything:: It seems as though (maybe I misunderstood) you were saying that there have been multiple genisi for life? This is another one I'd like to see some evidence on as all my studies have given pretty solid evidence to the contrary. One tree of life. All organisms connected by one common ancestor. No matter how many branches the tree makes through natural selection, no matter how often it has them trimmed off by mass extinction, all those branches share the same roots. We are related by evolution to every person, animal, plant, and microbe on this planet. Life began, as far as we can observe (observation being the basis of all science), only once. One single celled organism that evolved into every living thing that is or ever was. Out of trillions and trillions of possible places life to exist in the universe, it has been observed in only one. And within that one place, here on Earth, life is in *every possible place*. On Earth life exists in everyplace it can 100% of the time. That is paradoxical. I'm totally cool with discussing the meaning of the universe, life, and everything. I don't get upset in discussions as long as it's done academically and not childish banter so feel free to discuss more, I don't take offense easily. I am always down to listen to new theories; I just like to see evidence and observations. Again, sorry for the lateness of my reply. Cheers!
