Tonka toys distributed sega master system, they had no idea how to mkt it in usa, also Nintendo had done a good job of monopolistic practices, as a toy store you could carry sure fire money maker nes, or new company sega, but Nintendo may decide to ship less product if you support competition. So sega was hard to find, except in big dept stores. Add to that box design, game choices, Japan and USA, we're different mkts. Nintendo figured this out early, sega just released games, nobody had heard of, plus Nintendo had all the video game companies under a 2 yr exclusive contract. Sega only survived because arcade devision was strong and home ports, plus Genesis came 2 yrs later, and sega released ports of 26 bit games in 8 bit

Hi John and great to see you talking about the Master System and it is a difficult choice, I live in Brazil and the Master System here was a success. Well, three of the games you picked are actually already on my list, Alex Kidd in High Tech World, Alf and Cyber Shinobi... YIKES! However, Tec Toy here in Brazil manage to produce worse games, such as "Ferias Frustadas do Pica Pau" which I recommend a good distance from this title, but for you it may be a novelty. But I would put Indiana Jones Last Cruzade on that list too, I was very frustrated with the acquisition of this title, because as beautiful as it was, graphically, its gameplay was horrible in my eyes. MASTER SYSTEM IS THE CHAMPION OF THE SHITNESS

Bought my Master System (Model 1) before I bought my first NES. Over the years I've bought 5 NES consoles. Only the top-loader (Model 2) still works. The other 4 need replacement pins, a design flaw of the Model 1 (toaster). Meanwhile, my original Master System and my imported Japanese SMS still work great.

John: Alex Kidd: High Tech World is the low point of the series. Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle: Am I a joke to you? Jokes aside, despite High Tech World being weak, is WAY BETTER than the trash pile that is Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle. Anyway, it's a nice list, but I would put Back to the Future Part II on the list, because man, that game is pure garbage.

Scary thing, I bought Alf and F-16 Fighting Falcon new, so paid full price. I did manage to buy quite a few games new before Sega pulled the SMS. For several years the only SMS games that I could find in retro stores where those in the Great sports line. eBay, and a fellow collector in the U.K. is how I've built up my collection to where it is now. I also have some prototype repros and a couple of homebrews. The great thing is that the SMS is not region locked, although Japanese releases used a different cartridge size in order to make the J-SMS backwards compatible with the SG-1000, SC-3000 and Mark III. The card slots are the same size, but the two consoles use a different version BIOS.

Might have been your video, some one rated Kings Quest 7 I think it was as the worst game ever ported (not to be confused with Kings Quest 1 ) . . wait, as I'm typing I realized KQ7 was on NES not Sega. I'm an idiot sandwich.

I actually enjoyed Alex Kidd in High Tech world. While it was a little confusing as a kid to get through parts of the game, once you figured it out it wasn't too bad, but I can see why some don't like it. Once you play some of the tectoy releases most of the official games aren't bad at all.

I can’t remember the game I didn’t like the most but I do remember the first video game I beat Enduro Racer. I remember beating it at like 10 or 11 o’clock at nights. My dad was sleeping and I started yelling loudly dad dad dad hurry come here. He jumped out of bed in a frantic thinking something was wrong. He seen me sitting on the couch and I said look I beat it. He just gave me that look like I can’t be mad at him but I want to. However he wasn’t watched the ending with me and went back to bed. The next day he asked me about beating it and we went out and got another game. I believe it was spy vs spy but that is a memory that I’ll never forget. For whatever reason that memory is burned into my head. It’s funny because I’m 39 now and have a son of my own. Maybe this will happen with me and him who lol

I feel like the Sega Master System is the console that "Big Nostalgia" has mostly ignored (except for a handful of games like Phantasy Star and Alex Kidd in Miracle World). I wanted to see if there were any cheap clone consoles to play my cartridges on, considering that I haven't been able to get my Master System to power up in at least a decade, but the Genesis/Mega Drive clone Mega SG console seems to be the only clone console option and that one's expensive (~$190 U.S., probably worth it but I don't have that kind of money to spend on a console mainly to play Master System games; I still have a working Genesis).

You could always try and find a third party Mastersystem for your Genesis instead. The real ones can be expensive though I think, especially the slimmer model 2 adapter. But there are third party versions of the model 2 adapter.

the reason that it got mostly ignored is because in the US most passed up the SMS for an NES, SEGA was slaughtered in the US market.
@SteveBrandon

@@UltimateGamerCC I know that (though I think the Master System was a little more popular here in Canada compared to the US) but I'm surprised that there's not much in the way of clone consoles with cartridge slots for other parts of the world where the Master System was a lot more popular, especially Brazil and Europe.

Actually owned a couple of those games! Before I watched this I had a quick think about what would be in the list and F-16 was the first that came to mind. I've got a soft spot for Hi-Tech world despite its flaws and bizarre nature. Was such a difficult game to complete and I spent weeks trying to get all those map pieces. A friend of mine finally completed the first level and gave me the password, but obviously the passwords were just randomised for each copy and it didn't work for me! Think that was the first time I ever rage quit a game!

I did play em all, they where terrible for sure. I remember as i kid, i was i diehard fan of turtles, and we got the first game on NES. I was so mad when i got to the sewers, i started to cry in frustration. It was suposed to be the weekend of my life.. But it ended in the worst weekend in my childhood.

I like Cyber Shinobi and Alex Kidd HTW, but I'm still considering them as 'lower half' if you put all Master System games from worst to best, ... and F-16 Fighter was my worst game, but I believe there are even worse (even worst) games out there, search for the rare Sitio do Picapau Amarelo, Ferias Frustradas do Pica-Pau (the Woody Woodpecker game made in Brazil) and 20 em 1 (20 bad games in one, I think only Action 52 for the NES can be worse than that) But Master System was my beloved childhood anyway, will love it forever =D I grew up playing Zillion, Alex Kidd MW, Sonic the Hedgehog, Gangster Town and Double Dragon

SMS was not so popular in the USSR/Russia in mid 80-90th as Famicom/NES (mostly Taiwan clones, of course). But the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis was a real explosion. While SNES was really expensive and some sort of soupy by graphics, Sega was kickin-ass for us. Well, popularity of consoles in Russia was Famicom->SMD->Playstation.

F-16 was really disappointing, all the more so for being the one attempt at a 3D engine on the system. Given Yuji Naka's sublime experiments in 3D with Phantasy Star's dungeons, and that even the NES got a decent version of Elite, I do feel it was badly short-changed in this area.

Cyber shinobi was one of only 3 games I once had on the master system. Had no choice but to work with it. It’s slow and choppy but once you get used to the mechanics and know where all the traps are it gets pretty easy. It’s a slow game that requires patience. I thought the ending was pretty cool, for the time and for the master system.

I had lots of games, but I think I borrowed Cyber Shinobi and loved it. I completed it multiple times. All the different shots you could get? Plus the ninjutsu? I've seen other people give it bad reviews, but like this one they didn't show any of the features and just showed someone on these exact same crates.

There are a lot of bad games out there... And a lot of people who actually feel, even if guilty, pleasure in playing them. People say that King's Field for the PS1 (The american released one which is actually the second game) is utter crap, yet I played the heck out of it, sans any guides, any help and drawing my own maps on millimetric paper. Same guilty pleasure with Lagoon, FF Mystic Quest, DJ Boy, WET, Resonance of Fate, Loaded, Metal Saga and The Ninja.

I'm not a fan of airplane-related games in general and flight sims in particular, but the absolute dumpster fire that is "F-16: Fighting Falcon" may well be one of the very worst video games ever produced. That thing is HORRIBLE.🤬🤬🤬

Nearly all Sega produced games took three months. Phantasy Star took six. I'm sure Compile took much longer to make R-Type. Taito (yes, they programmed a few, Sega published) and Tecmo/Salio is a mystery. Still, my fav console. I feel some games crushed Zelda and Castlevania.

Nexa has the dubious distinction of making two of the Master System games you've chosen as the worst of all time. Also, Alex Kidd in High Tech World has got to have the single worst localization I've seen in any game ever. Why are Alex Kidd's parents dressed in feudal Japanese garb? Because they didn't bother to change their sprites. At all. The NES did a pretty good job of covering up the Eastern roots of games like Blaster Master and River City Ransom, but High Tech World was satisfied with changing the title character's sprite and throwing in some English dialog, and that was it. After the crummy Alex Kidd and the Lost Stars, Sega needed to hit it out of the park with the sequel... and they bludgeoned themselves unconscious with the bat instead.

As a long time Master System/Genesis/Sega CD fan, I hate admitting that you don't have to look far to find some terrible SMS games. Games that are horrible in their graphics, playability, sound, and repetitive nature. Almost every major franchise has some great games and one major stinker. Why arcade hits like Thunderblade didn't get some more time and attention is beyond me. Not exactly bringing the arcade experience home.
