The 3612 is perfectly suited for "constant" rpm. Best used as power generators. Even in marine applications, you rarely see them as main engines for propulsion. They are however used as multiple power generators for the integrated Electric Propulsion system for the entire ship (bow and stern thrusters or azimuth propeller pods running on electric). They absolutely hate different rpm settings from low speed to high speed then drop to idle. A short burst of power damages them.

The steam-electric concept went into hibernation after Heilmann's attempts, but it didn't die completely. At the end of the Age of Steam, there were four classes of locomotives built using steam TURBINES instead of cylinders, trying to take a page from ships. Of the four classes, only one - the Pennsy S2 - used a direct-drive action. The other three used steam turbines to turn generators to power electric traction motors. The latter type suffered from needless complexity - diesel prime movers were simpler, lighter, cheaper to build, and they were safer.

For another horrifying cab story, look at the British Railways Class 31. The 31's, as you know, were slow but good, but the cabs, specifically the cab windows? No. Not good at all. They were made by the Beclawat company, and just wouldn't stay latched open. This meant that crews lived in fear of the cab windows flying upwards and either smashing the glass, with splinter injuries ahoy, or, much, much worse, trying to BEHEAD the driver as he lent out. They were nicknamed "Beheadatwat" cab windows, in parody of the Beclawat company! That's how bad they were. And thus the name of an otherwise excellent engine was besmirched. Edit:- I forgot to mention that the cab windows actually did kill a driver. Yep, the windows have a death toll to their name.

Some notes regarding the MK5000C's: The reason for the bearing failure was a mistake relating to the AC alternator being mounted to the engine. Like Baldwin, the lack of additional engine mount pads at the alternator end allowed for more flex at that point, so the bearing failure. MK's original control system had some issues that were figured out. Utah Railway asked for a more common braking system as part of the purchase. (26L, if I remember correctly). All of the base components by themselves were good, just getting everything together the right way ended up not working well, as you said.

If you make any more of these, please cover Durango and Silverton Nos. 1201 & 1202. Probably some of the most recent worst engines ever, and the problems with them are endless and hilarious. For one, they were supposed to have six wheels on each axle, but those couldn't fit so four wheeled axles had to be put on instead. Those look super weird though, because there are huge gaps between the axles and the frame. Another thing is their fuel tankers are way to big, to the point that when 1201 tanks were put on the crew at the D&S had to cut into them so they'd fit on the rails. This would work...until the diesel went over a switch. I could go on about these terrible diesels, but to top off their terrible story, the company that built them went bankrupt shortly after making them so now the D&S has another headache to deal with in regards to these diesels. I worked on the D&S, and I think these diesels NEED to be talked about in some way shape or form because the story behind them is so ridiculous.

The MK in the MKC5000 was Morrison-Knudsen, one of the most respected names in locomotive rebuilding. They were based in Idaho. Yeah, Caterpillar built a big diesel, designed for electrical generation, but it wasn't designed to be throttled and it was designed for stationary usage (e.g. hospital emergency power or mine power generation). Shaking it in motion and throttling it didn't do wonders for longevity. I'm sure that Caterpillar would have designed an engine appropriate for the task if approached by GE or EMD, but it was probably too risky to sink money into someone new to new locomotive manufacturing.

Steam electric shouldn't have been a radical idea...I can tell you that in the power generation industry, the most efficient way to generate electricity is to use your fuel to boil water, and then use it to turn a steam turbine turning a generator. Some power plants (e.g. natural gas), have dual-mode turbines that can run on the Bray cycle (same as a jet engine) until you've generated enough steam to turn your turbine under steam.
