The greater problem encompassing these trends is that the majority of people do not do things with intention. They see, they repeat. It's why all photography looks the same on IG (obviously not all for those whom overly parse words). Whether making a video for youtube or personal art there should be intention behind all of your decision making. I had a video scheduled on this topic; I might move it forward a bit. @retrogroovecraft
11 ай бұрын
Fun fact (at least as far as anyone truly knows), the 'palming' technique was not originally a transition. Skateboarders, filming themselves with camcorders would palm the lens after the take where they nailed the trick they were trying to get. That way, when they went home and edited their footage, they could quickly locate 'the take' on tape, by fast-forward/rewind until they saw the palm. Some KZitemr must have seen this left in, or remembered doing it, back in the day, and the rest is YT history.

Another thing not mentioned in this video but it drives me insane. Cutting clips so tightly that all natural pauses have been removed. It's just unwatchable to have 30 minutes of word barrage where obvious cuts are constant. I can really appreciate how you choose to rarely do it and when you do it's a natural breather or pausing moment. Not the middle of a sentence because they fucked up and couldn't be arsed to re-shoot it.

Haha hilarious dude! Agree especially on the last two. Another one that's driving me nuts now and been done to death is the "positioning the camera really low and then coming into frame to bend down to talk to it at the beginning of the video". I'm looking at you McKinnon and Matti! Oh, or the black bars coming in and out of the frame to transition into a "cinematic" sequence. Takes me out of it everytime. Just freaking cut to it, we can adjust to a new aspect ratio!!

The black bars are fine if the point of the moment is to illustrate a technique, so it helps see the sequence as a thing separated from the other content. I even like that your head has the lemon-squeezer deperspectiveifier filter applied; but my absolute favourite is at 1:41 when you whip out your foot-long finger. Brilliant. I have taken this "edgy" technique a step further and have started to shove my palm in the face of my friends to help indicate end of sentence. I expect the yt fad of 2019 to be creators slap their lense hood so powerful that the entire tripod whirls around to help us understand that a cut is happening. Just so I can be equally edgy in my conversations with friends. I am yet to skateboard on a handstand just to get a very unique perspective when I relocate from my house to the grocery store though. Just to make sure that shift of perspective does not confuse myself. By the way, my entire life is a b-roll. And just a b-roll. A fiest of stabilized slowmo impressions of reality. With absolute zero content. Broken up by shoving my palm in the face of those I encounter.

You forgot one, and it's the worst one for me. The side angle b-cam talking head cuts, especially when they're done frequently and on a regular timing. It's terrible and awkward and annoying.

It's super weird to watch sbd from the side like he's suddenly talking to sbd else :) The perspective shift kills the video. But the only way to fix it is to record a-roll in 4k, and edit it in fhd.

O-M-G Funny as shit, and kinda true. My favorite was the last bit about filming the places you go. HAHAHA. Love your videos, and once I actually get my channel up and running someday, I'll try not to copy you.

This video feels like it was made in 2009, but I want that to be taken as a compliment.

Whole video was amazing, but the montage of you saluting the camera at the end was pure magic.

I had set a video to render then started watching your video. You were talking about the things we use too often you don't like, and I went "I FORGOT TO ADD THE TIMELAPSE!" Hahahaha. Also, I hate jump cuts.

The hand covering the lens to finish move is so annoying! I can’t understand why so many youtubers do it. Great video.

Just to piss you off, I'm going to start using all five of these techniques in all my videos, and I might even end them by putting my elbow in front of my face and saying, "see you on the next one"!

Oh man that was hilarious! I can always count on you to give me a good laugh. U missed a few though, snap finger transition, holding camera in hand slow-mo shot while walking through field or something and I'm sure there are a ton more.
