I was self taught for like a year, I made many projects and then I got a job as a code teacher. Now I’m doing a full stack boot camp (part-time), and so far I’m breezing through it. I hope it’s worth it 😅

@@markcali626 Yeah I graduated, but I wouldnt say it was worth it. I taught myself how to make video games and ultimately I got a job like that. Of the 15 people that were in my cohort, one got a job and it was an internship. Teach yourself on youtube and save your money.

My son has a BS in computer science and is having trouble finding a job, so he is looking at a Coding Bootcamp to develop my skills and hands on experience? He has the money remaining from his 529 and is not currently employed at a job that is in the computer science field, and can live with us during his training. The coding bootcamp is in person and 12 weeks. The question is would a combination of BS degree and coding bootcamp course with some projects in his résumé portfolio be worth it?

ive tried to do self taught, and i got up to learning html and a bit of css, but my god, the self discipline to self teach is no joke. even with odin project. i feel like i need a bootcamp to give myself accountability, else i can't do it

i actually suggested one of these bootcamps to my bf and he didn't want to do it because of the price. also i'm shocked about the difficulty getting your first job. i remember these bootcamps will offer "career training" to their students and they make it sound so easy getting a job
@EmilyDowgialo

They make it sound sooo easy, the career services at my school were sort of helpful but they were mostly therapists listening to us talk about how hard it is to get recruiters to talk to us 😭 I felt like they could have trained us more on how to interview, too. They mainly connected us with employers but I failed a ton of those interviews because I didn’t know how to actually impress them enough to want to hire me 😭😭

the problem is that there's no good bootcamp that offers true VALUE for the time and money put in. 1-2 weeks of experience with multiple programs will NEVER look as good as 20 weeks in 1-2 programs.

There's something interesting you mentioned. That you need to put in the extra effort and if you're not willing to put in the effort you should not do a bootcamp. And honestly, with the amount of hours a day that bootcamps take (for those that don't know, they usually take 10 hours a day, start at around 9 am and end at 7 pm) it should be PLENTY to finish with a reasonably good level because you're actually putting in A LOT of hours daily. So the problem is not that people don't want put in the effort, because 10 hours a day should be considered as putting in enough effort, the problem here is that the teaching methods of bootcamps truly suck, they're really, really bad. I had both experiences, being self-taught and going to a bootcamp, and it was crazy the amount of learning I could do in 10 hours when I was teaching myself vs when I was doing a bootcamp. They would just give you some sort of thing to code without any previous teaching or just one hour to watch some pre-recorded lectures with very little content and some person that was really bad at explaining, and then they would throw you into a group with another person to figure it out. Most of the time, neither of us would even know how the hell to approach the problem because we had very little previous preparation, so we would usually arrange to take some time on our own to learn a little bit more about what we were supposed to do, google, read, take notes, practice the basics, and they would yell at us because we weren't already coding the thing they gave us. It kind of was like they even discouraged proper learning, that we were supposed to "learn" by banging our head against the keyboard to see what would come out of it, they even called this "problem solving" lmao. Not to mention the hours they made us waste on pointless shit like "talking circles" and "meetings" supposedly in an attempt to "develop our soft skills" (the pair programming groups also had this purpose), as if we were monkeys with zero social skills who needed the forced interaction to become employable individuals. On the other hand, when I was learning on my own, I would take enough time to properly learn the topics I was supposed to use when coding something or doing a project, and it would NEVER happen that I didn't even know how to approach a practice problem or a project, even it was a lot harder and challenging than I was used to, at least I would have an idea of what I was supposed to do. So, the main takeaway is that bootcamps' teaching methods suck, not that people aren't willing to put in the effort. Don't do bootcamps, people, trust me.

What is a good one? I was ready to go to Galvanize until I started doing the pre course work and found it amateur. Then I was told that all of their campuses are permanently closed , which was a red flag as they were recently bought out. With the so called high demand of developers you would think there would be good schools out there.

Not being able to socialize shouldn't even be a reason. If you're a social person, do part-time. Bootcamps are extremely important for routine building and becoming task-focused. Forget the coding for a second; it forces you to become a good problem solver by teaching you to think like a programmer.

I’ve been doing the bootcamp, and balancing work on the weekends… this has not been easy, but I am proud. Now more stress to get through the job interview phase. How did you or anybody reading this prepare for the interviews? I have a couple lined up, if anybody has any tips on preparing, please let me know. I’m willing to learn!

1 year bootcamp learned copy paste tbh , and u can barley understand anything when you learning with other students , there were beginners and pros learning together , spent 6000$ on nothing tbh , I learned so much more on udemy , bootcamps not worth it at all.

Conding bootcamps are the most stupid thing that has happened to the industry. There is natural selection that exists and if can't understand it from the documentation, look for another profession, it doesn't get easier after that. I am not trying to be a prick, that's the reality if you don't have the mental capacity to understand the basics on your own you're not fit for that profession. I mean like $1700 is the price for 5 year University degree in most Universities in Europe, and at least you will have an accredited degree rather than flying paper by a yolo company.
