We look forward to the junco return in late fall. Love their tuxedo look and hippity hops on the ground under the bird feeders.

what else that's very cool about birding i've found is the people you meet, and the friendships that are formed

I miss summer already but the nighthawk flights we just had are probably going to be my highlight of fall, or my lifer Blackthroated blue warbler who was nice enough to still be in vibrant colors.

Ryan, what a beautifully composed, articulate presentation of the most compelling attributes of fall birding. If this won’t inspire even the most reticent birder to get up and get out, I don’t know what will. Many thanks.

I love the juncos and the return of my sparrows! I also have 4 sandhill cranes that live in our neighborhood. We have named them Mike, Dolores, Ester, and Ed. They nest in my yard sometimes and are so much fun to watch.

The fall weather for sure. Birding in the summer with a mixture of sunscreen and bug spray on your skin makes for a greasy day.

I’m way too far west to see a Cape May, but I did see an orange crowned warbler outside my window on Saturday.

Fall migration is great, but so is spring migration. In my first full fall of birding, I thought that it was overrated because I didn't see pretty much anything, but I guess the past couple of years have definitely been better. It's already a bit late for a few migrating birds this far north, which is a bit disappointing since I'm still missing several pretty common migratory species due to being out of the country during spring migration and early summer, but you have to work with what you get.
