I’m 17 and Gomer Pyle still comes on MeTV. This past school year I would come home from school I would take a quick nap and make sure I set my alarm so I don’t miss all my favorite oldies! Then I would get up to start my homework while watching The Andy Griffith show, WKRP in Cincinnati, and Gomer Pyle then Hogan’s Hero’s and sometimes try and stay up a little later to catch The Carol Burnett Show. Jim was an amazing human being, met him in the early 80s when he preformed at a dinner theatre in Ravana Ohio. My roommate worked there and jim would come to the house and hang out with the people that work at the restaurant. He was such a down to earth and normal person , loved to cook too, one night we all sat around talking and jim and Keith decided to cook up chilly. Guess you had to be there, but it was some funny stuff and the chilly was pretty good too. Sad to say i never got the chance to see him sing as i didn't work with Keith at the restaurant but I'll never forget how much he liked just being normal. Great guy, awesome human being..👍

I was lucky enough to have done the audio (as a contractor) for Nabors three times, during appearances at the Valley Forge Music Fair during the 1980's and 1990's. One of those performances was in either '91 or '92; and necessitated my taking my 10 y/o son to a rare 'Saturday morning mic-up the band, set the levels on the talent' appearance, for a 7:00 PM performance. Mr. Nabors supplied his own SM-58 primary microphone(s), and four 'effect' microphones; his standards were exacting, and at one point, he needed to see and hear what I was noticing (an open shield on his primary mic), so I sent my son to the stage, to 'fill in for the talent'. For a full fifteen (solid) minutes, we were treated to his complaining about his younger sister, with amplitude levels totalling around 1,500 watts. Around 12:30 PM, I locked everything down, with plans to return around 5:00 PM. As we were beginning to leave, Nabors' assistant asked that my wife and (both) kids return for that evening's show, as his guests, which we did. Just prior to the show, Nabors introduced himself to them, and handed my son his corporate check, in the amount of $50.00, annotated as being "scale rate". Til this very day, Jim Nabors is the only person in history, to have succeeded in 'shutting my daughter the-hell-up'. Definitely a 'class act'!!

It may not have caused Jim Nabors to walk away from the show, but in an interview he commented that he had a sadness revolving around the Vietnam conflict. He shared that the intro scenes of Gomer Pyle USMC were filmed at an actual Marine Base in California. And that most of those men in the scenes didn't come back from Vietnam. Another angle that I've heard was that American service members stationed over there were asked what they thought about Gomer not being deployed to Vietnam and their reaction was basically, "don't you DARE send Gomer over here! We love him!" Couple other facts about Jim Nabors: For many years, he sang "Back Home Again in Indiana" before the start of the Indy 500. Carol Burnett also considered him to be her good luck charm, and he was always a guest on her first show of the season. My understanding is that he lived a very happy life on a plantation he owned in Hawai'i that he shared with his beloved mother. A gentle soul who was gay before it was okay to be gay. Thanks, Gomer. Jim Nabors was appointed an honorary Marine by the Commandant and promoted to Lance Corporal. From CBS News, August 10, 2001 After 37 years, fictional Pfc. Gomer Pyle has achieved the promotion to lance corporal that eluded him during five years in the Marine Corps on the popular television sitcom in the 1960s. Actor Jim Nabors, who starred in CBS's "Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C," was pinned with the lance corporal insignia, a PFC stripe with crossed rifles, by Gen. James Jones, commandant of the Marine Corps. It took place Thursday during a no-nonsense ceremony on a parade ground at Camp H.M. Smith, headquarters of the Marine Forces Pacific and the U.S. Pacific Command. Although Gomer Pyle, the Mayberry service station attendant Nabors created on "The Andy Griffith Show," had trouble adjusting to the Marine Corps, he displayed the attributes of a good Marine, Jones said. "He's honest and embodies integrity. He is filled with determination. He extensively attempts to do the right thing in every circumstance. He is selfless ... and he is loyal to a fault," he said.

Love the show & like Frank Sutton as Sgt. Carter, he cracks me up as much as Gomer does which Gomer Pyle had matured alot more as the series went on. Now I'll watch your video.

I agree with your 5 reasons. I had a friend who was a Marine. He told me where he was stationed, they actually had a "Gomer Pyle" squad. It was made up of guys who were very close to being kicked out of the service. This was their last chance. My friend rose in the ranks and commanded this squad. For me, it was the Vietnam War. I found it hard to laugh much anymoreat the show, knowing that our guys were coming home in body bags at an alarming rate. :-(

Even though one of the reasons Nabors quit the show was to record more, he managed to record 7 albums during the run of the "GP" sitcom, from '64-'69. But, he did use his newly-free time (along with the new hour-long variety show) to record with wild abandon (and some studio musicians)! In 1970 alone, he released 4 albums, and 3 albums in each of the following two years! As many know, "The Andy Griffith Show" and "Gomer Pyle, USMC" were both on CBS-TV. Nabors' decade-long recording career (20 LPs!) was on CBS-owned Columbia Records, until he recorded four gospel albums for the more folksy, gospel-tinged (and much smaller) Ranwood Records in 1976 and '77, two each year.

I read a story about Jim Nabors that gave a little insight into the subject. According to the story, Nabors never liked the title sequence because all the men marching with him were actually Marines. Many of those men were killed in Vietnam and Nabors felt guilty about his character being so goofy. He had a great respect for the Marines and felt like he was mocking them by playing such a character. Another thing that the story mentioned was that Jim Nabors was actually the opposite of his character. He was a very quiet, low key person. He was simply exhausted both mentally and physically from playing Gomer Pyle. It is also true that he was feeling his age and didn't think he could pull it off anymore.

Frank Sutton doing his own show would not have worked. Sutton died in 1974. Nabors definitely saw the handwriting on the wall regarding the Rural Purge. Above all, Nabors may also have known that CBS had a bad habit of cancelling popular shows very rudely and abruptly: Gilligan's Island, Lost in Space and The Incredible Hulk were all killed off without warning, and Nabors didn't want to go out that way. (Oddly, Bill Bixby wanted to do a series finale, in which Dr. Banner finally found a cure for his Hulk-outs; but CBS said "No." They should have done it.) All of the actors in those shows were not even told directly by CBS, and assumed there would be another season. Instead, they were informed by a small item in Variety magazine.

We haven't had any TV service since Jan. 2016. We dropped cable about 13 years ago, and went to Dish Network. We dropped Dish when they bumped the History Channel up to the next more costly tier, and then started showing things like Pawn Stars, Ice Road Truckers, Swamp People, and others that weren't anything like the original History channel. I also found it somewhat sad that TV shows have changed and not as family oriented as they were back in the 60's. Even the Disney Channel was something that went off course.

I remember watching Gomer Pile USMC in the mid 80's during the daytime... occasionally interrupted by ads for tech schools teaching how to drive the big rigs (exactly as Kramer described in Seinfeld if I'm not mistaken). But for my money, it's all about the naturally beautiful women of the late 70's and 80's. One of my earliest serious actress-crushes was Ann Jillian from It's A Living and Jennifer Slept Here, and several other roles including starring as herself in her own biopic about her struggle with breast cancer. She won that battle and continued to act through the 90's. I'd like to see an episode of her if you can find the time.
