I'm not a native speaker of English, but your English is so articulate that it was easy for me to understand most of this video. If you had spoken a little bit more slowly, I could have understood this even better. I've been a user of GARMIN ForeAthlete 910XTJ(Japan edition) over the last three years. I can't wait to meet this fantastic wearable GPS watch (It hasn't been available in Japan yet).

I would have to agree about not having music, that can really reduce the battery life of the watch. I used my AW2 when I went hiking and that was the most frustration experience ever. The battery, bluetooth disconnecting, jumping touch screen when it got wet. The battery died and I still had to pull out my Ipod. I wanted to throw that thing off the mountain. I'm getting this watch or Forerunner 935.

Hi, Just a note on mapping. I opted for the normal 5 so without mapping. Because of mapping on such small screens is in my context to small to give good overview of the area. I think is nice but not practical for "heavy" use. I use a edge 1000 or gpsmap64 as routing/mapping and then also with real maps, yes I'm getting old fashioned. Nothing beats a real map folded out on the ground and use gps (edge/gpsmap) to set next step/trail to go. I really like the option of the fenix5 to send heartrate to other ant+ devices. No need to wear the heart chest strap. Bluetooth options are still limited but garmin promised to make more bluetooth sensors available. The fenix 5 replaced now my ambit2 (suunto). One thing i hope garmin will do is make the connect app/website more system configuration possible on the watch. Just like suunto with movescount. In watch config is some times a bit time consuming. Via web/app would be nice.

I imagine you had the same mindset as I did before making this video: trying to put something informative and useful out there without actually having worn the Fenix 5x for any real length of time. Gotta admit, it seems like the absolute best option out there for all-purpose everyday wear AND extreme sports/outdoor use. My biggest concern is that it'll be tough to take off my trusty Fenix 3, which has never let me down...
@TechyAgent
7 жыл бұрын
+Minnesota Dad Very true... if I had the Fénix 3 it would be a lot harder for me to make this decision. For me, it's been a tossup between keeping the Vivoactive HR (which does OK but has some obvious shortcomings), waiting for the Apple Watch 3 to see what it offers, or jumping in on the Fénix 5X. With the massive success of the Fénix 3, i'm confident I'll be happy with the Fénix 5X.

I had originally wanted the 5 due to its battery logevity, but then changed my mind and went for 5X because of its WiFi. I had done ultras before with advanced dynamics HRM-Run and tempe sensors, and the data transfer via bluetooth was awefully long (~45 mins) due to file size.

When you mean durable, it's all plastic Casio G-Shock series. :D Fenix's are fine but black metal bezels scratches earlier than even the mineral glass screen. And Garmin didn't release a F5x with a silver or titanium bezel, that doesn't scream I have scratches on my bezel. Pay such a high price and get a scratched watch after a couple of weeks. Not a real issue but if I'll pay so much...
@TechyAgent
7 жыл бұрын
+sis651 I don't mind scratches on the metal, but I'm hoping to avoid scratches on the screen. Ive had a lot of wearables with plastic screens that look terrible after 6 months of daily use, with scratches and haze. But I get what you are saying, a scratch resistant material would make for a better bezel.

Hello Erick,I am sorry but I disagree with your first statement regarding Gamin Fenix 5 series being the first fitness tracker with Bluetooth and ANT + technology built-in. 6 years ago I bought a MOTOACTV fitness tracker which had both connections available, bluetooth and ANT+ already. Unfortunately, Motorola stopped not only the production of such a good fitness tracker like the MOTOACTV but also, they stopped supporting the website so, I don’t have access to my recordings any more. I’m not a runner but I like to use my treadmill for 40 min. plus, do boot-camp and/or cross-fit training for another 40 min. I would say that, with the exception of not being able to find points of interest and not being a water proof device, MOTOACTV was a much better "FITNESS TRACKER" if we take into consideration that, when we are training or exercising, who cares about finding a point of interest in a watch? Instead, I would rather have the built-in MP3 feature, as the MOTOACTV does so, I can listen to music w/o having my phone on me while I am training.I have been wearing the Fenix 5 for a few weeks already and over all, I would love Motorola to reconsider their decision of stopping the production of the MOTOACTV and bring it back to the market. I paid $250.00 for the MOTOACTV (this tracker really worth for that price) and $599.00 for the Fenix (more than double that I paid for the MOTOACTV) and it doesn’t have a built-in player. This comment is just my personal opinion.

+Yosue Caridad really, the only difference is a slight difference and battery life and the 5X has offline maps and navigation whereas the 5 and 5S do not have road navigation, and they are more limited to how many topographical maps they can carry at a given time. Sorry, I put the same comment in this video because its more recent so i had said : Impressive price, verry expensive without mp3/4 or the ability to upload new map for country of choice. In addition you absolutely need a smartphone to view the data. No software or application to synchronize with laptop (W10 /mac) where you can check you activity: training evolution, daily activity, sleep follow.. No specific applications (GARMIN) for smartphones to support the setting or merge the activity and get a general overview ! Eric I made the plunge and got my Fenix 5. Loving it so far. I have been doing single activities.... strength training, cardio running etc. I was playing around with the multisport feature and created a strength & running profile with those two activities thinking I could just transition from my strength training to my run. I typically use the rep counter during strength training. To end sets you press the lap button. In multisport mode the lap button transitions you to the next activity. Do you know of an alternate method of using the rep counter without activating the next activity?
@TechyAgent
7 жыл бұрын
That's interesting, I haven't ever used strength training in conjunction with a multisport setup, so I don't know of any fix. Whenever I do strength training, I only use the built in sports profile, and then if I do something different afterwards, I end that workout and select a new profile.

+Samuel D Robinson to my knowledge Garmin only allows you to pair the watch with one account at a time. So you could have two different devices both running the Garmin app, and you could choose which one of the devices to sync with. But you would not be able to be connected to both at the same time. You would only be able to be connected and receive notifications from one device at a time.

Mr. Techy, I'm currently looking for a new wearable. Like you I prefer to have option to external HR source. In addition, i need one that is safe for swimming. The Garmin 5X seems amazing. However, I really won't use all the additional "mapping" features you discussed. So, would the Garmin 5 or 5s be a better option? Thanks in advance! jg
@TechyAgent
6 жыл бұрын
I would definitely recommend the Garmin 5 or 5s, however if you don’t need mapping and you primarily want to use it for swimming and have the ability to pair with external heart rate sensor that is waterproof, and also has GPS, I would recommend the Garmin Vivoactive 3. It’s not quite as durable and flashy as a Fénix, but it’s much cheaper and it will offer you all of the same features that you will probably use on the Fénix. And it will also be compatible with Bluetooth and ANT+ external sensors. And for what it’s worth, Garmin makes A chest strap that is designed to be able to track your heart rate in and out of water.

Techy Agent thanks. that's right. But, durability of Vivoactivehr is questionable easily destructive or damaged?... fenix series have sapphire glass and metal frame. The accuracy of the spartan sport is way above the garmin's Elevate system and more similar to the scosche rhythm arm band. Have you ever used this spartan sport whr? Its OHR is also suitable for crossfit, weighttraining, etc.

Garmin has been my go to for anything GPS for ages and they are really on top of the game with 5x. Cover all the training/activity bases plus great mapping and durable. My profession his really hard on my watch. Last 2 before Garmin vivoHR died in just a few months because they weren't sufficiently hardened again impact (internals broke connection to circuit board in both cases) my vivo is still going strong but going to Alaska and wanted the stand alone mapping and ultra gps function to go longer between charges.

My Fenix 5X looks a nice wearable but I'm sure the pressure sensor is defective and Garmin don't want to take care of it... What an After Sales service!

I guess it all depends on what you use it for but I just don't get it. I can't see spending $600+ on a smart watch that does not have any storage that can be used for music playback. If I am spending that much money, I want to leave my phone at home or in the car when I go for a run or hike.
@TechyAgent

+Joseph Parks that's fair. I'm hoping that Garmin does a firmware update to allow this feature, but I could be pressing my luck

I completely agree. 16GB of memory and they couldn't add a basic MP3 storage feature? Big miss for those of us who prefer to not to cart our phone around with us when we're out for a run or at the gym.

I disagree. This is a watch meant for the hardcore athletes that want the best battery life for for their runs or triathlons and not just gimmicks with music storage , higher resolution screens , touchscreen and all that useless features for someone that is dedicated. Providing storage for music playback means less battery life. Much less battery life. I don't want want that and I respect Garmin's decision on this. I want a good dedicated tool rather than a Swiss army knife that does not excel at anything. If you want smart features buy those 1 day battery lasting Galaxy Gear Fits because you are not a dedicated athlete but more of a trend adopter and don't buy a Garmin as you seem to confuse them with gadgets. Simple. Garmin has a different niche. This device is an activity tracker first and a smart watch second. As I said , you can always go to those 1 day battery standby devices and 2-3 hours of activity time Android device and enjoy the "Smart" features better. Garmin plays for a different audience.

No, guess you wouldn't get it Joe. Clockyro is right... Borrow your boyfriends iPod if you really need your music. Some people will complain about everything. $700 is not that much for a watch anyhow....there are MANY brands that charge far more and do nothing but tell time.

Dont think the price is worth the cost, to expense when it does exactly the same as the 5s or normal 5, at twice the cost of the 5 or 5s, not worth it just for maps. And all fenix 5 have buttons and take a beating. I got the saffire s5 the fenix 5 and 5x are far to big on the wrist a big watch is more likely to get damaged.

I think it's a great option, yes. It will have built in sports profiles to support triathlon training and events. You could also look into a forerunner watch that supports triathlon sports if you don't want to spend so much.

People really need to be careful taking advice from everyone on KZitem about product reviews. If you have wet hands, gloves or wet screen on the Casio protrek pressing the tools button will allow you to cycle through options, no need to touch screen. Now there are 4 reasons.

Thanks for this comment! As a fella trying to decide between 2 great watches, I was leaning towards the Casio because of all the extra stuff you can do with it but the videos comment about using it in the real world outdoor elements stopped me in my tracks. It was a big and the only real strike against the casio for me. Now if your statement is true ( I've not been able to personally confirm yet) then the casio for price and wealth of functionality seems the best choice for me. Not saying the Garmin isn't awesome also, because I think it is, and if I had the funds I'd get both. But sadly I dont and have to choose one. just my personal assessment.

Would any Garmin Fenix 5 version fit military abuse? I'm enlisting soon and I wanna get a new gps watch..
@TechyAgent
7 жыл бұрын
+itaythsking yes, it should. There was actually a version of this watch released called the Garmin Tactix Bravo that was mil-spec, up to and including the ability to be able to read the watch face with night vision goggles. They have not released an updated version of it, but it had a sapphire screen (just like the latest version) and it had the same gps chip. Basically what I'm saying is that this latest version should be able to hold up to serious abuse.

itaythsking - I own, and wear the Tactix Bravo on a daily basis. The Tactix Bravo is basically a Fenix 3, with a few special features. From what I know, there are two versions of the Tactix Bravo. I have the latest version, and I have been using it non stop for about nine months. It is a great watch, and it can definitely take some abuse. There are reviews of this watch on the web. Just google it, and see if it is for you.
