When I seen videos complaining open shops being closed on Sundays and holidays and saying that's a reason that it's a terrible place, my reaction is: That is what makes this place civilized in my opinion. There are still actual holidays! When EVERYONE gets the day off and commerce isn't king. I hope Austria doesn't change in this respect.

If you have a full time job you will struggle to get your groceries, as the opening hours during the week and Saturday are from the 1950s. In addition to this when you go to the store in the evening, it's extremely full and a lot of stuff is sold out, the ques are incredibly long

I rather like that most shops are closed on Sundays here in Austria. We have a lot of family members working in the restaurant business and as health workers who often work on Sundays. Finding a day where everybody can meet up at a family gathering is therefore already hard enough, sometimes not even possible. If now even all those working in stores won't have the Sundays off anymore it would become permanently impossible. And calling the work on Sundays voluntarily is misleading. Sure, some would appreciate the higher income, but many others would feel forced to comply with the demand for Sunday work for fear of losing the job or going to experience other disadvantages. Btw. in my youth (I'm 60 now) pretty much all shops closed at 6 pm and at 12 noon on Saturdays and Thursdays and had closed for a lunchbreak, typically from 12 to 2 pm I think and no gas stations sold food or other basics those days. Miraculously we survived.

Good points! I agree, in a fast-paced we expect everything to be available at any time, but it’s actually pretty nice to being forced to slow down on Sundays. But it’s something to get used to if you move to Vienna.

I grew up in Vienna in the 70s and 80s. Seems it has not changed. Actually it has, back then everything closed on noon Saturday. I hope you don't make the mistake many foreigners do and it is not to mix with Austrians. Austrian are great loyal friends forever and help you understand and solve many of the points you listed.

If it is the most liveable city in the world where English is the global language, I am assuming it is also the case that English should be enough there to live? I am a graphic designer and my girlfriend is a game artist, having decent years of experience in Budapest and 3 years so far in the UK. But I do not have paper qualifications such as degrees, only actual experience from 2 countries. Is it something that can break the ice to get a job offer over there?

there are plenty students, unemployed and domestic foreigners who would all gladly work 1day a week for a lower wage. And yes shops are robots, they are a concrete business selling items not an emotional human that needs time to relax. If thers good money to be made on a Sunday, then wekkend staff can be hired to operate...just as it happens in most commercial cities around the World.

@@greenleaf8226In Austria, wages are higher on Sunday and holidays, that is what makes it more expensive for shops who have employees to open up. Even if it were allowed. @@greenleaf8226Actually, I know the long lines of shoppers on Sundays, as I live close to the Billa on Franz-Josefs-Bahnhof and like most people living around here I would never go there on an Sunday because it's way too crowded. But these thousands of shoppers in the open markets in Vienna are not the issue. Why do you think REWE decided to keep their shops closed on 8th December? It's just not profitable if ALL shops are open. As long as business is concentrated on a number of shops and it's their decision to open up, it's good for all. And I know that the employees at our Billa don't mind working, as they get extra pay. Also, you can buy essential goods at every gas station if necessary. In touristy areas there are special regulations regarding opening times, but it's always the decision of the businesses - as long as it's profitable, they are open, in slow seasons many keep their shops closed on Sundays. That discussion regarding Sunday opening has been going on for so long now, and there will only be changes if there is a real need for it. As long as the majority of Austrians does not see the need, most supermarkets will stay closed on Sundays and holidays. As for other shops, even the shopping Saturdays around Christmas are not such highlights for all. The trend to internet shopping has been increasingly taking away from the instore business. I have been in the city on Saturday afternoons and was astonished that only few people walking up and down the streets were actually carrying shopping bags. It's not what it was years ago.

From my point of view, Vienna is clean and beautiful but I can’t imagine living there permanently. I really miss the communication with other people there. Also, the city is better for “early bird” people because most people wake up very early in the morning, while evenings are rather boring. My points rather go for Paris, which is much more exciting and entertaining!

Nice honest video. Many people have cash in their pocket, its actually more private and more freedom to the individual...not the banks/Govts business what you decide to do with your personal money.Fully agree with you about closed shops on public holidays, its so fustrating especially when its normal since 20years in other countries to be open on Sundays. Totaly agree about the lack of friendly chatter with strangers, there is a dry coldness in Vienna...believe me people are warmer and more flexible down south in Kärnten...where they talk about the Vienese behaviour ticks...but honestly, its getting much better... i've shocked a few Vienese with positive chitter chatter, they dont know how to intialy react but quickly understand and are usualy grateful. Social flexibility is getting slowly better, the more the Austrians travel/live abroad the more they are changing. On the whole, its a small country so easy to control with official Gvt rules and regulations.... a bit to many rules and to much control?!?! Have you realised how many Catholic religious public holidays there are? even in Italy the Catholic HQ mist of these holidays are cancelled and not celebrated any more! Its a great video...glad to know i'm not alone with these points.

well, cash also means less protection of the payment, which makes it easier for dishonest businesses to cheat you... if you pay by card, you can still file a complaint with the bank and eventually get your money back... like when I fell for a scam on a certain eshop, the only reason why I eventually got my money back is cos the money went from my account, everything could be traced... if I paid for the same stuff at some shop with cash, they could act like they have never seen me and all

I can say many good things about Vienna but I also can say some bad things about it as well which were and is annoying to me and the reasons which make me leave are the facts that finding jobs isn't easy because of the language, another factor is that the people here aren't friendly and they put me off too because they are so cold to integrate and, to be honest, I don't like their culture, especially food and the weather the rest is a beautiful city. ❤

I am from England and I lived and worked in Austria for almost two years (2017 - 2019) Yes the shops are closed on Sundays, but you get used to it very quickly. You soon get used to making sure that if any food stocks are running low, you set time aside to shop on Friday or Saturday so that you will be fine for Sunday. I think it's great that the Austrian's use Sunday as a day reserved for focusing on spending quality time with their immediate family and sometimes for meeting up together with their relatives too.

In roman languages, like italian or spanish the meaning of day of the Lord in latin "Dies Domenica" for sunday is still present: Domenica/Domingo.

There are plenty students and unemployed nstionals as well as domestic foreigners who would be willing to work for a few hours Sunday half/full day for some extra money. In London (for example) they saw the potential if big generated business from the Sunday shopper and started opening shops on Sunday morning over 20years ago!
